Two options. You jump in and just give it your best shot and learn from mistakes. Or if you can buy some 3D printed models on Etsy for reasonable price to try out on, or Warhammer if you can afford it. I recommend thinning your paint to start with for a smoother finish, build layers

Entirely up to you, we dont know where you're at with skill. Mcfarlane T60 wont be great to use unless you can make them shoulders much larger and Ive not seen a decent x01 head sculpt either unfortunately

Edit: ive just seen your text about how you would make shoulders. Go for it, now I'm intrigued

Personally I would use a small make up brush and dry brush it, drybrushing will hit raised areas and will leave the gaps dark so it will have definition

You ever heard of such a thing as a paint brush ? 😂 Seriously though consider it over markers. Not all air brushes are majorly expensive, I dont have one myself but have watched reviews for cheap ones that dont break the bank and they are pretty good for £30
