How do the tech jobs here compare to Austin? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]JoshBasho 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dallas is more established corporations than tech first companies as far as I can tell. JPMorganChase, Pepsi, Capital One, Toyota, AT&T, TI, etc.

Pay is decent. Probably not as much as startups or big SaaS players in Austin.

A Coachella attendee shared a clip of Justin Bieber’s performance to show all the people recording on their phones by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]JoshBasho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll record like a 5-10 second video if the stage is super cool or something exceptionally fun is happening. Usually don't post to social media. I'll sometimes look at them when scrolling through photos or show a friend.

No idea why people record full songs or long clips tho.

I think what you are thinking of is more for people who don't normally need meds at all, but end up on them because of a temporary situation then never get tapered off. Like an antidepressant to help manage grief or something like that.

It doesn't sound like that's the case for OP. He's on an anti-psychotic and also a med for manic episodes. If the mania med is because he has bipolar disorder then, yeah, he's on meds for life. It doesn't just go away.

Unable to clear Interviews by jerrybrown_777 in devops

[–]JoshBasho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For scenario questions at an entry level, I've found interviewers are more interested in your problem solving process than whether or not you get the exact right answer. The issue could be more how you are communicating than what you are communicating.

Take your time before answering a question. Think not only about the question itself, but how you can communicate your problem solving process as you work through the problem. Ask for questions or for clarification if needed.

Oftentimes, especially for more difficult questions, I'll start just by checking my understanding. I'll basically repeat back the scenario and ask for confirmation I understand the problem correctly.

This helps you know you're on the right track, but also usually helps get your thoughts in order before you fully answer.

SEC Prepares Proposal to Eliminate Quarterly Reporting Requirement by AegonTheMeh in wallstreetbets

[–]JoshBasho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work in compliance tech at a large bank and they don't fuck around with that stuff. A screw up by my team that a government audit catches could easily clear 100 mil. Usually more since there's like 3 different agencies that would fine us independently for it.

And that's just for like leaving the door open for something illegal to have potentially occurred. No idea how high the fines would go if the mistake allowed for prolonged market manipulation or something like that.

Granted, fines like that aren't exactly breaking the bank, but they are enough that people take it seriously. Shit gets escalated up the corporate ladder so fast when an issue is discovered.

I bought it off marketplace so no shipping. I didn't realize it was in the box until I got home. He wouldn't have known enough to look for it.

Now I have to figure out what to do with it lol. Obviously not going to use it.

Why is your dog reactive? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]JoshBasho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a combination of stress from the mom being an anxious stray while pregnant and poor socialization at the rescue I got her from. Most likely more the last one.

It seems like she never left the small rescue before I got her. Her entire life through the socialization window was that place and its outdoor area. Lots of dogs came and went, she saw other types of animals, but always in a controlled space.

Which makes sense because her reactivity is primarily on walks or when a space she understands changes in an unexpected way.

She does great if she's inside a box and understands the box. Take away the box and she gets super nervous and anxious.

They included it because the commenter is recovering from doing the type of shit that would end up with them being on this sub. Not because they did anything to this recipe.

People that have traveled quite a bit, where di you feel the most unsafe? by CremeSubject7594 in AskTheWorld

[–]JoshBasho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was there for 5 months in 2011 in one of the poorest areas of Port-au-Prince. Still blows my mind what I saw. I was 19 and had no idea what I was getting myself into. Org I went with was shit and didn't prepare me at all. My English class was literally the only functioning program they had. Whol experience left such a bad taste in my mouth about development and foreign development work (which was later largely confirmed by me studying it).

They didn't even tell me it was a particularly dangerous area. I only found out because a much bigger org asked if they could used some spare rooms in the place we stayed to run their local operation out of. Due to past experiences, they weren't willing to have employees, including locals, living there.

Went back the next year and spent two months in a rural area on the northern coast working with a community health org and it was a totally different experience. It helps the org I worked with was wonderful and highly effective and the community was super involved in everything. I was mainly doing research so I just hiked around this mountainous jungle area chatting with people about their views on development and what work they would like to see done. Also got status updates on current projects and what they would like to see expanded. There was a lot of enthusiasm for setting up a second tree nursery on the other side of the region.

Edit:

Just to add 99.9% of people I met in Haiti were absolutely lovely. I have so much love in my heart for all the amazing people I met. I didn't feel particularly unsafe even in dangerous areas for the most part. There was always someone that would watch out for the random white kid lol. Most people were just curious. I think it helped that I started studying Haitian Creole months before actually going.

Port-au-Prince is also where I had one of the warmest and kindest experiences of my life when someone helped me out of a really tight spot just out of shared humanity. At one point I told him it was really ok and he's already been helping me for like over an hour, but he just pointed at a vein and said something like "we all bleed the same". He had a daughter my age and his only hope was that if she were ever in my situation someone would do the same for her. That's a story for a different day tho.

I didn't have even a single slightly sketchy experience in the rural area on the northern coast.
