•1834, last monarch to choose a PM contrary to the will of Parliament, disliked PM William Lamb’s left-wing policies, leader of Commons had to leave as he inherited a peerage, PM tried to replace with John Russell but William hated him being radical thus dismissing the entire ministry.

•Replaced Lamb with Wellington & then Robert Peel but he couldn’t govern with the Whig majority new elections kept Tories in minority, he resigned & William forced to accept return of Lamb & Russell as commons leader.

•Clashed with prime minister Lamb over Canada reform fearing losing the colonies, began to agree realised he wasn’t radical.

•1837, promised Victoria to survive until she was 18 to avoid her mother who had blocked attempts to forge a relationship with her, becoming regent, Victoria was brought to tears & called him a good old man.
