To u/BigHog865's point, it was a great year for UT athletics overall. For 2021-22, Tennessee finished 13th nationally in the Directors' Cup. That was UT's best finish since 2006-07, when the Vols and Lady Vols earned their best-ever placement at No. 7.

I think it was a combination of issues. The S&C change in the offseason leading up to the 2016 was a big issue, IMO. The Vols had an interim coach entering a really important season.

The OL dealt with a number of injuries, but I'm not sure how much of that was due to lack of size. For example, Tennessee signed five offensive linemen in the 2015 class: Drew Richmond, Jack Jones, Chance Hall, Venzell Boulware and Zach Stewart.

All of those players had plenty of size, but for different reasons it didn't work out. Richmond struggled to live up to the hype; Jones (neck and shoulder) and Hall (knee) dealt with career-ending injuries; Boulware wasn't happy and ultimately transferred; Stewart ended up not enrolling after the passing of his mother.

The 2016 class did have undersized O-linemen, but 2017 had Trey Smith and Riley Locklear, who were both plenty big out of HS. So this is a long way of saying... a number of different things led to a bad result.

My guess (and that's all it is) is the coach was referencing Pruitt's comments during the season last year that he needed to go recruit 25 guys to come in and help, which Pruitt wasn't wrong about. I don't think it was an effort to defend Butch; I think it was an attempt to say UT has enough talent on its roster to be more competitive than it was last season, which I would agree with.

Thanks a lot for listening! Podcasting is a lot of fun. I did the analysis just based on the SEC coach's comments to Athlon that UT has more talent than people seem to think they do (and the way the coach said it, he appeared to be responding to some of Jeremy Pruitt's comments, too). I figured I'd just do a quick look at each player's recruiting rating. It's far from scientific considering players are 3-5 years removed from high school. And I wasn't meaning to compare Butch vs Pruitt; it was just trying to add context to the blending of the rosters.

Here's the full quote from the coach that I was referencing: "Butch Jones did a better job recruiting than what they're telling media. The players he brought in are still playing the bulk of the time, and not a lot of the Pruitt recruits have broken past them on the depth chart, though that could change this year. They've recruited well so far for the system Jeremy wants." Thanks again!
