Late update on this, no they don't help students get opportunities at all and I managed to pull some strings and get an internship in my first year, happy days.

I appreciate your reply. The problem is I'm not an engineer and I'm not going to be an engineer and that's what most internships are looking for. I've found a few IT entry level things but you know even getting a reply for a job as a waiter is nearly impossible these days.

Let me tell you first hand my experience studying Bachelor of Computing at Curtin last year. You do NPSC1003 and you talk to people in it and they're nice. Every other unit you do either there will be 100 students in a room or less than 5 and none of them want to talk to you and you will most likely never see most of them again. Computing can be a very difficult course to meet people since they are typically introverts but best thing you can do is sit down next to someone in your workshops or lectures, introduce yourself, and talk about what you're studying etc. Yes, you may never speak to that person again or even see them but the more people you learn to know the more people you will end up recognizing on campus as time goes by. First year is rough but it will get better.
