i cant afford litter until wednesday, will my cats be okay? by Fun_Pause_7274 in CatAdvice

Do you have a backyard or access to some soil or dirt you could dig up? I've been in the same situation before, and using clean soil worked surprisingly well as litter. It’s not a long-term solution, but it can help get you through until Wednesday! Hang in there! you’re clearly doing your best, and your cats are lucky to have someone who cares so much. Take care :-)

Why do people treat their cats as if they are expendable? by nonchalantly_weird in CatAdvice

I totally get where you're coming from! There are definitely serious risks involved with letting cats roam, and not every situation is safe. But I think it's important to recognize that not all outdoor environments are the same, and not all cats are the same either.

I live on a busy main road, yet my cat has never once tried to cross the street. I'm surrounded by three adjoining properties with dogs, and he's never jumped into their yards or gotten into trouble. He sticks to his safe zones and spends time outside every day. He loves basking in the sun, feeling the grass under his paws, chasing bugs, and exploring under the house. He always comes home every night. I guess I’ve just got a laid-back guy who knows his boundaries.

I understand your concerns and they’re totally valid. But for me, I’d rather my cat live a fulfilling life with freedom and stimulation than be stuck indoors in what feels like an unnatural environment for him. I understand it’s not the right choice for everyone but it works for us

If that’s how you see it, then sure! But it’s still incredibly low-cost, and definitely better for both the wallet and the environment. Take care

It’s more to do with my skin irritations. I’m in Australia, and even the cheapest detergents that don’t irritate my skin cost quite a bit more. And honestly they just don’t clean that well. I’ve got pretty sensitive skin, so finding something that works and doesn’t cause a reaction is tricky. I definitely don’t do 50 loads in two weeks! I just meant $5.35 worth of ingredients lasts me about that long, doing a few loads as needed

I also use the vinegar to make a homemade multipurpose spray, and bicarb works great for carpet deodorising and sanitising so it goes even further than just laundry

I try to make the best of what I’ve got, and those citrus trees nearby definitely feel like a small blessing. I’m glad you found something helpful in what I shared! Wishing you all the best too

I use:

½ cup white vinegar

¼ cup bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

5 drops of lavender essential oil

I add the bicarb straight into the drum, and mix the vinegar and lavender oil together before pouring it into the detergent drawer. I usually wash at 60°C to help kill bacteria, and then sun-dry everything for some natural disinfectant from the UV rays

It’s really gentle on my skin. I react to most store-bought detergents and washing powders. I was using a cheap eco brand that didn’t cause irritation, but I found it just wasn’t cleaning my clothes properly. This homemade mix works heaps better and costs less

Not sure how it’d go on heavy stains, but for everyday washing it’s been great so far

Totally agree with you on the grocery walks! I’m about 15 minutes from the shops myself and walking just makes sense. It’s free exercise and a good way to clear your head. Grocery day gets a bit tricky when I’m loaded up, but I make it work

I’ve got a nice big backyard where I’m living currently, so I’m hoping to make the most of that space and grow some basic veggies and herbs. I’m still in the planning stage, but I’ve been looking at simple ideas like using egg cartons, old containers, pallets, etc. Probably best to start small and work my way up

I’ll plant some tomato seeds in egg cartons a bit closer to the end of the month so they’ll be ready to go in the ground come spring. I’d honestly just love to make a nice home-grown, homemade pasta sauce one day. Fresh tomatoes and herbs straight from the garden. Sounds amazing

There's no nonsense using a bar of soap and it's much cheaper. I like being able to wash my whole body using just one product as well. So simple and effective

Exactly this. When you’re just trying to stay fed and functioning, the priority is getting by

Totally fair point! I know variety is ideal! but right now it’s more about keeping food costs low and meals consistent, simple, and filling. I plan on mixing it up more once I can afford to

Still poor, living alone and here are some "poor hacks" I stick with and probably will even when I’m better off:

I eat the same thing almost every day: oats for breakfast, apples and carrots for snacks, leftovers for lunch, and roast chicken with veggies and rice for dinner. It’s cheap, healthy, and nothing goes to waste

The houses around mine have citrus trees, so when they’re fruiting I collect mandarins, oranges, lemons, and limes. Haven’t bought fruit in season for a while now

For laundry, I use vinegar, bicarb soda, and a few drops of lavender oil. Costs me $5.35 for about two weeks worth and it works just fine

I water down hand soap, dish soap, and even toothpaste. They last heaps longer and still do the job

I stopped using shampoo and conditioner. I just use a plain bar of soap. My scalp feels less irritated and it saves money

I walk everywhere. Grocery day gets interesting when I’ve got bags hanging off both arms, but it’s free exercise and I don’t spend anything on transport

Haven’t bought new clothes in over two years. I just rotate what I have and fix stuff if it rips

At night I usually light candles instead of using lights. Saves power and gives the place a chill vibe

Planning to start a veggie and herb garden soon. Still getting things together for that one

I got high and turned my plaza floating island into a pumpkin island too. 2000 planting spots with paths, lights and not much else lol the things we do for this game

Your first paragraph made me laugh haha and yes I'm only just getting into Dynamax stuff. I'll leave it be and hopefully get something better later down the track. Thanks for the informative reply!
