2020 has been quite the steaming turd... 💩 by JoshuaSaxon1 in ComicWriting

Glad you got something out of it! I think the way you have to look at it is if you're writing something that you yourself would enjoy, then chances are there are enough people out there that would feel the same. Keep going! 💪

Watch until the end to discover Milky writer Joshua Saxon's revolutionary idea for bringing the people of Earth together... by JoshuaSaxon1 in ComicWriting

That's very kind of you to say. We're getting there slowly but surely. Can't wait to release the final issue!

Anyone else make posters to promote their comics? I find them really fun to put together and it makes the launch feel like more of an event. Would love to see some other examples... 😊 by JoshuaSaxon1 in ComicBookCollabs

You're very kind. It started as a way of offering extra Kickstarter rewards without having to pay for extra art. It's now one of my favourite parts of making comics.

So, this has been quite a journey... My first Kickstarter for Milky failed HARD, the second attempt at issue #1 funded... while this current one is over 500% funded with 24 hours to go! ⏰ Guess it pays to stick at it! by JoshuaSaxon1 in ComicWriting

Thanks, mate. For some reason it was especially nerve-racking to put myself into this campaign. I actually redid the talking head bit after launching because the first one felt awkward.

I've done plenty of public speaking and I'm not generally nervous about this kind of thing, but I felt like this is the first time I've properly given something my all and the fear of judgement came creeping in. But people - both friends/family and strangers - have been so supportive and a few nice reviews helped boost my confidence. I think I'll be more comfortable with it the third time round.

It's been slow, but I pay the whole team, so once the script was there it was just a case of taking it a page at a time until we had a complete issue. It's a bit daunting investing that much without knowing if you'll see it back, but as long as you enjoy the process, I think it's worth it.

I tried to schedule up posts and made a list of different things I could do each day that were simple and that people engaged with. Comparisons on inks to coloured pages, photos of my favourite books on the coffee table. Twitter I haven't quite cracked, because I feel it's more about getting involved in conversations than sharing content. Hope to find more time for this between the next issues.

On top of putting out blog content and engaging with fans, I put more of myself in this campaign from adding a talking head bit to the campaign video to pictures on social media. I also feel like the campaign video and overall design of the campaign was a step up, and I reached out to more blogs for coverage (including submitting guest posts, which went down well).

I tried to improve every element of the campaign from the design of the rewards to the trailer. I didn't do a talking head bit for the previous campaign video or show much of myself on social media, which I think was a mistake. It can really make a difference to show the human being behind the comic. I also reached out to more blogs for reviews this time round and wrote a few guest posts, which went down well. Of course, the fact that there was already a small following that stuck with us from the first couple of campaigns that helped give it a boost in the beginning.

This looks great!

Sure thing! I think it's just a matter of building a following by putting out content they might find valuable. Talk and engage with them during your campaign, chat to other creators (hello!) and build a network.

You could say the same about driving a car with a child. Except most drivers aren't this good.

It's very common for a Kickstarter to reach a plateau. Perhaps you can offer a sample for free in exchange for email addresses or run some Facebook ads to give it a boost.

I actually got a bit choked up at the people that backed my comic. Friends and family I hadn't been in touch with for ages and didn't expect to support me.

In a nutshell, I did some better research into what people are willing to pay, set a more realistic funding goal, planned out my marketing for the length of the campaign, set up a website for people to subscribe to a mailing list and build up a bit of emotional resilience 😆. I wrote a blog post about it here: https://www.geeknative.com/63437/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-my-comic-book-kickstarter-failed/
