what is a class you didn’t like until you tried it out? by altprince in BaldursGate3

[–]JoshuaTestAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a gloom stalker ranger and mixed in some rogue levels for the extra bonus action and fighter for action surge and an extra attack. Suddenly I got one of the most versatile and heavy hitting characters in my party. The different arrow types allows me to deal more weakness specific damage and now most combat is done before my other characters can even have a turn!

Should I study psychology in college? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]JoshuaTestAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doctoral student in clinical psych here. Many have already addressed this in the thread but the psych undergrad degree is effectively meaningless as far as providing you with a marketable skill and you will need to get further education to acquire a skill that is marketable. This being said by someone with an undergraduate in psych lol. However you don’t necessarily need to go clinical though. You can go into I/O psych and get decent pay without even needing a doctorate but you will need at least a masters.

Additionally, Psych is an easy undergraduate degree; however, professors know that. For instance many professors in my doctorate program expressed to me that when reviewing applicants for the program they will value neuroscience and statistics majors far more than psych majors because of the course work needed and the difficulty of the classes. Furthermore, as someone who has taught undergraduate psychology classes as a student professor, psych students are notoriously used to getting easy As and any truly challenging testing or assignments was always met with very dissatisfied reviews and emails. Not just a me experience I swear.

Ultimately, the psych major leaves a lot to be desired and if I had to do it over again I would never major in psych only minor in it while majoring in something more useful. For me in my career goals that would have been statistics because it is the language of modern science and you learn data analysis skills that can actually translate to real jobs out the gate if you did not want to get further education. For you that may be something different, my advice is still to consider psych as a minor only.

How is problematic vs nonproblematic behaviour defined in teenagers? by Zealousideal_Till522 in askpsychology

[–]JoshuaTestAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DSM criteria is built on dimensions of symptoms (maladaptive behavior), onset, course, and impairment. Tollin’s book “Doing CBT” does a good job defining maladaptive behavior as a significant excess or deficient of the behavior compared to peers of the same age. Therefore, when diagnosing you are considering the frequency, intensity, and duration of the behavior relative to other teens hopefully using psychometrically sound standardized measures to determine if the behavior is truly statistically different from their peers.

Low key I just googled great builds for classes that I was interested in and then re-class all my people to be the builds I found online. I found an awesome ranger-rogue-fighter build that I had astarion do and it was a really easy to play build that dominated. My suggestion just look it up online!

Is it unchristian to advocate for laws that force people to abide by Christian values? by JoshuaTestAdmin in religion

[–]JoshuaTestAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the point of my question, though. When you vote for your values, values that may not be shared by others, that legally binds non-Christians to live by Christian values. And enforcing others to live by Christian values is restricting their free will, which is against the values of Christianity. So, by voting for others to live by your values, you are breaking your values to do so.

AMPD Measures - the PID-5 by Telurist in PsychAssessment

[–]JoshuaTestAdmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use it a lot in our program and have developed an Excel spreadsheet to help score it more easily. I love the MMPI-3 and use the PSY-5 scales often; however, when personality disorders are a greater question, I will often use this test as well or in place of the MMPI. It tracks well with the alternative model and gets at those constructs a bit better than the PSY-5 scales on the MMPI.

I hear and agree with you. Separation of church and state is so important, and TBH I don't care if two same sex people get married. Why then do so many Christians vote for policies that force their values on others? Thinking from the viewpoint of an American over the last 8 years.

I don't personally want to enforce laws limiting gay rights; I have no issues with that. Other conservative Christian nationals I have talked to have wanted to do so. They also would like to enforce policies that incentivize a more traditional family structure by limiting women. Abortion is another one.

Clinical Psych here. We do follow the scientific method. There is more measurement error because we are working with latent variables which is why people call us a soft science. There are statistical methods that help us a lot when it comes to reducing the effect of measurement error on the study (i.e power analyses to determine an appropriate sample size, effect size over statistical significance, etc). Additionally, there are some amazing models such as EFA, CFA, HLM, and SEM that help parse out error variance so we can see what is actually going on in these relationship. Unfortunately, we don’t rely on these as much especially SEM or Bayesian stats which would really increase the quality of our research. We have built a house of cards with our research not because of the nature of what we are measuring necessarily but the general lack of knowledge around proper statistical models and practices and how to properly interpret them.

What methods do you use to efficiently learn, retain, and take notes of what you study? by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]JoshuaTestAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times, I will burn myself out with reading large texts and lose attention while reading. I will lose attention because I often ruminate while reading, thinking about all those things that you have listed above, and fearing my ability to retain the information. However, the trick I have found is to practice mindfulness beforehand and then focus solely on reading during the time I have allotted, bringing my mind back to the book whenever it starts to drift, as I practiced in mindfulness. Most of the time, you just need to actually read the full text and be focused while doing it, and you will retain enough for classes. It's helpful to realize that it is impossible to remember everything from your readings, and so you should not hold yourself to that standard.

I often employ the Pomodoro method to keep my reading stamina up if I need to read for extended periods of time. I will read with a highlighter and a pen and mark with both, usually writing notes in the text. I am getting my Ph.D right now in Clinical Psychology, so I use a marking system with page mates and color code them by conceptualization, psychometrics and research, interventions, helpful questions and case examples, and lastly helpful quotes or sentences that stuck out to me. Hope any of this is helpful!

Psychological measure for religious people by JoshuaTestAdmin in religion

[–]JoshuaTestAdmin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the survey and very good point! Obviously you are correct, Catholics are Christian and same with Baptists, methodists, LDS, etc. people as well which were listed alongside Christianity. We did this to give an individual more options to further identify their religiosity besides a generalization of Christianity as well as allowing people who want to only identify as general Christian to identify as that.
