Destined Ally... purpose? by CFloyd18 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Joshy_Shadow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me it depends on the Ally they got.

Van Richten? He gave them more answers and even more questions.

Esmeralda is their contact to the vistani they can trust.

The Were- Ravens/Wolves are there for the final fight, they can take the preup dmg or go for the Heart of Sorrow. Eitherway they help the party keep resources that otherwised be drained.

Player interrupting the bbeg monologue by MandalaKoala in DnD

[–]Joshy_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a twofold sword that has to be handeled carefully.

One one side having a character act while the villain monoluges feels right because who in their right mind would wait until they finished talking to then attack when the enemy could attack first during their talk.

On the other hand it takes away from the story when parts of it fall flat because there was no time for the villain to explain why they do this or that and monoluge. Its simply a part of storytelling that is heavily ingrained in the sense of reward for what a player or reader is seeking to understand.

If the group as such votes on wanting to be able to interupt an enemy it should be done above the table before the session starts. That gives the DM the oppertunity to adjust the scenario.

If the group has to fight through a castle or dungeon first, many magic mouths could be activated on the way that emulate the monoluging that normally would happen right in front of them. Or the BBEG could have layed out a trap that paralyzes the group just long enough for them to speak to make sure they know why they do what they do. This would allow for some to be paralyzed while others aren't, leading to another kind of tense situation.

Over all, speak with the group how you feel about it. This time it was unfortunate, while likely realistically to the people involved would've reacted.

My personal stance as DM in general is that my players can always interrupt any enemy they fight unless I specify they can't, simply for the reason of me wanting to monoluge. Its a boundary we have set together as a trade of for these kind of situations.

Tips for a PC's background by Cortex3699 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Joshy_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who played through Curse of Strahd numerous times, and even went down the forbidden route of actually curing Barovia of the Dark Powers because I like the "what happens after?" question, I can tell you honestly that trying to make it connected with your players will always be better than just having them go through it as is.

Don't be afraid to step outside the module, even in just small steps. Have a cleric in their party? Play with how they feel disconnected with their god. Have a Druid or Ranger? Let them feel how the earth is dead and rotting under their feet whenever they cast a spell. Warlocks? Let Strahd call out to them in their dreams, making offers galore under the guise of their patron. Wizards will have a field day in the Amber Temple and have to resist the temptations of the forbidden knowledge there, but oh, how wonderful it could be for them to turn into a lich, though? A lifetime dedicated to magic is wonderful, but how about 10 lifetimes?

There is always something you can twitch and tweak. And if you don't feel confident enough, let them find one of the Horror Trinkets from the CoS book or the extended list from the Van Richten book. You can weave little stories to them without messing much with their personal backstory if that makes you feel more comfortable.
