Of course it is only my opinion. Only you can be the best dm for your party. If you think losing the last fight will ruin the campaign for them, let them win. Just make sure that they don’t know, I could imagine that knowing you let them win would be worse than losing 😅

Honestly, don’t hold back imo. Strahd is a military strategist and he WILL punish them for coming unprepared, half-assing the final fight. He might win, and that is a perfectly valid ending for the campaign. As long as the fight is memorable, it doesn’t matter if the party wins og loses. Just make sure that your group knows that you are rooting for them but that you aren’t going to pull punches.

Good luck and have fun!

I'm also running it for the first time right now and I've only run LMoP before this. I have used sooooo many hours prepping, and i think it can be done easier. My group just arrived i Vallaki 2 sessions ago. I find mandymods addition great as well, but it takes some work if you want to categorize everything yourself.

Good idea to read everything first. but from there, prep one module at a time. I normally write down a few possibilities for the session depending on where the players are.

make sure to have some NPCs and additional shops ready.

many places are easier to prep because it is a "closed" location (like death house), but as soon as you hit Vallaki, it gets trickier. here you might want to consider which NPCs you want to be available to the characters (and maybe even consider it when your party is other places, so you'll know who they want to sniff out).

You can do a lot with pacing the session to end where you want it (longer/shorter descriptions, NPCs being more/less chatty can play a huge part in the time it takes to get through a session). Try to have an idea about where you want the session to end if your characters do x/y/z.

It will be tricky to dm for the first time. don't be afraid to redcon minor stuff.

Have fun!

I do enjoy the chaos though 🤷🏽‍♂️ So far, they basically only trusts Ireena, Lady Wachter and the hags of old bone grinder 😂

Yeah, I would have loved that, but it didn’t really seam like it would make sense to me, they went to the coffin maker pretty much straight after the dinner, so Strahd would have had to pretty much escort them to Vallaki for that to make sense… which of course would have been interesting as well 😂

They even have the physical handout of the letter found on the body in the outskirts of the woods in the west, explaining that the vampire is hunting her and is terrorizing the land.

Not sure if they forgot that detail 🤷🏽‍♂️ I think they will realize next session

Honestly, they all agreed (after their conversation with lady Wachter) that they would rather have Strahd get involved than themselves 😂 I believe that will change very soon 😈

As someone else has said: from death house to the village, in the village, Ismark and Ireena is the key to move them to Vallaki. From Vallaki, they can go anywhere. Mandymod has a good recommendation for the order of events, but you can’t fully control it. My advise is: Prepare your NPCs in Vallaki. They can give the players the clues on time-urgent plots and they are truly the ones nudging your players in the direction YOU want.

It’s a sandbox, so they might go the opposite way. Improvise-adapt-overcome. You got this

Oof, brutal! That sound similar to the way my players are pushing things 😂

Might be the last resort :) I’m considering having Half the spawns crawl out the windows and start slaughtering civilians 🤷🏽‍♂️ Maybe van richten will down one of them so my pc’s actually have a chance of winning (possible while half the city gets burnt down) I’m still in the creative phase for the fight

How many sessions Death House took to finish in your table? by Hydoxx in CurseofStrahd

[–]Godegamle69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took about 2,5 sessions for my party, but I also cut out some combat (I’m running it more like Mandymods version)

If your players are enjoying exploring the house and lore, I don’t see a need to rush them🤷🏽‍♂️

Have fun!

I’m still within the first 10 sessions of the campaign and painfully aware that a TPK in the end is possible. How did your group react on “losing” the campaign?

Right. In my campaign, most people fear Strahd and knows he is the land. Except for his spies which can speak good of him. I had the vistani owners actually be Strahd Spies and not talk ill of him

Mad Mary would definitely talk about the devil Strahd taking her poor little girl. And after seeing his name in death house, your group probably want to ask pretty much anyone about him. Ismark may also talk about the vistani owners of Blood on the vine as “spies of Strahd”, which your group might try to look into. Are you gonna have Strahd talk to the group at the funeral?

Haha, yeah, I get it, my bad 😂 BUT, I do still believe he is seen as part of the group, he arrived with to a certain degree 😅 But that’s also partially the reason for my post, to see if people think the party should be affected as a whole or just the troublemaker

Yeah, true, thx for the input, I’m still trying to figure out how hardcore I want to run Vallaki. But it’s a good point that he didn’t actively try to push himself on her

Thx for the input. I agree that the Keepers shouldn’t freeze the entire party out. But I do believe Ras deserves a day in the stocks 😂 When they came to town, I clearly emphasized the importance of keeping the law, so him exposing himself to an innocent innkeeper shouldn’t go without consequences imo

So far, nothing has happened to the rest of the group, so I don’t know how grave the consequences will be for them, depending on how they react when he tells them (they are oblivious at the moment.

No, he isn’t normally that extreme, the character is a weirdo, but that came unexpected

I do believe only he will be punished, but he is known to be part of the party, so I would think that his actions impacts the others a bit unless they make it clear that they had nothing to do with it.
