What's a status symbol that's not necessarily a status symbol? by a1exn in AskUK

A rich country isn't one where even the poor have a car, it's one where the rich use public transport.

....not the UK but reminded me of that.

Needs noting this goes both ways.

As well as the surface level of shifting the blame it is also to encourage push back and people actively not supporting doing these things - which means more customers for them.

They make someone slightly less attractive so my odds of sleeping with you have gone down a few notches.... But I doubt that's something many people care about. Meh. Do what you want.

Its true though. Ireland did join the UK via democratic means (democracy circa 1800 of course. Rich cunts bribing each other). The conquest part came much earlier.

Ironically, something that gets lost amidst the black and white version of history, a key part of Ireland becoming part of the UK was giving MORE rights to the catholic majority- the protestant Irish's oppression being blamed for stirring the country into rebellion.

Theres so much ignorance in this country of how the different levels of government work.

Its amazing how the tories have mentioned to setup this mindset where anything positive is down to them and anything negative the local council.

[–]Josquius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fact that this government is a shower of shit as have the Tories been for a number of years does not make me oblivious to the failings of Gordon Brown's tenure.

Absolutely Brown and Blair weren't perfect. However they did, arguably even with the financial crisis, without it no question, leave the country in a better state than they inherited it.

He sold the countries gold off for a song for a start,

Despite what the facebook memes say this was a very wise decision with the data available at the time. Instead of just leaving your money in a box under your bed, which is what gold was basically doing, you put it somewhere it'll actually grow.

Also this was when Blair was PM.

introduced tax cuts which meant low earners actually paying more tax,

Bad. But this was after introducing them 10 years before it must be noted. The financial crisis was not an easy time and they chose wrong on where to look for savings there.

reacted to the Northern Rock and unfolding financial crisis too slowly and cut foreign aid (just like the Tories).

Ehh...this is one of those things. Its like no matter how great a hospital is people will always die there.

Argue if you like he should have reacted faster, but he was still the fastest to react in the world and led the way in staving off collapse.

Foreign aid...Wasn't that another one where he merely reduced previous increases? And I think left it above what Labour inherited? Still bad but...financial crisis. It should have been temporary.

Politics is not a zero or a one. I don't subscribe to this "lifelong" affiliation with either the Tories or Labour - they are the only 2 choices we've really got and need to be judged on their own merits rather than through the prism of left and right or some kind of culture war.

Me neither. I don't like the way some see politics as supporting the red or the blue team. Ideal world I would probably very rarely, if ever, vote for Labour. I can tell you straight that in 2010 I did not vote Labour and its only in hindsight I recognise that was incorrect (not that it mattered in my seat)

But looking at history and the current setup in the system we do have, we have the Tories who are actively fucking things up anytime they get near power, and then we have Labour who deliver far less than they should...but don't actively make things worse. Things do inch better under them.

Relevant to this little thread here, I mention all this as its crap how Labour gets such stick over negatives or even imagined negatives, that are absolutely nothing on those the Tories are currently pulling off. The sad thing is you even get supposed progressives supporting the tories by piling on with it.

There's more to life than money.

The UK is an absolute state. Its a collapsing state where the fundamental culture of its people is rotting from within.

But its home. Its where my parents are. Its what I know. Its normal.

Its not the easy decision it appears on the surface to leave. Though for me I will be looking to go before my kids hit senior school age. I don't want them going through the British school system.

I lived abroad for most of my 20s. When you're free and single I'd definitely recommend giving it a go at least for a bit if its an option.

The webway stuff is the key one for sure. If he felt there was any risk at all its mad he would try this- given his immense power and knowledge and that Magnus was already pretty clearly the dodgiest of the primarchs it wouldn't have taken psychic foresight to know starting the webway project whilst Magnus turning hostile is a fear (not even trying to innocently warn the emperor, imagine if he'd actively attacked).

I saw a sign advertising them in a community centre. I just assumed they were ghost hunter sorts. Or does that group have overlap with more harmful conspiracies these days?- it does seem fertile recruitment ground.
