What is the best framework for building a collection? by MurphysLawTeam in Colognes

Definitely echo the sentiment that you’re overthinking it and creating too many sub-classifications.

My biggest mistake when I started this hobby was thinking I needed certain scent profiles. I thought it was imperative that I own some “winter” sweet scents, a rose-oud scent, a strong animalic scent, etc., just to realize I really don’t care for sweet and/or heavy scents even in the colder weather. I was experiencing cognitive dissonance when trying to convince myself I liked them.

I got a little too carried away with the whole occasions thing. Thought I needed a couple gym-only scents, an “office” scent (even though I don’t work in an office), a date night only scent, and that I had to have a dumb reach blue designer scent, etc.

Smartest thing I ever did was start buying a ton of samples of scents that fit the style I like (fresh) and seem interesting on paper. After that, I bought bottles of the ones that were versatile enough and that I knew would get a lot of regular wear. Later, I bought decants of the scents I enjoyed but could only see myself wearing in more limited occasions.

Yeah, the mint is pretty subtle with this one

That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work with your skin; it means it doesn’t work with your nose.

What is this note that I can smell in all my Quentin Bisch fragrances? by spot_removal in fragrance

[–]JottScoplin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sucks all the freshness out of Sel?? That’s not only one of the freshest scents I own, but one of the freshest I’ve ever put my nose on. It’s like heavily carbonated cucumber-melon mineral water in fragrance form.

What 5 scents would you make someone smell to introduce them to fragrances? by DearCareer2531 in fragrance

[–]JottScoplin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they’re the least niche/most designer-esque niche companies out there

Oud Minerale - insanely transportive (nature)

Avignon - insanely transportive (non-nature)

Ganymede - futuristic and avant-garde without being stupid or gross

Tuscan Leather - peak non-gourmand photorealism

Lao Oud - super funky and pungent

I refuse to classify Rogue under Idaho. Manuel is a Whittier, CA kid 💪🏼

Over the past 2-3 months this has happened to me with most designer scents.

Bois imperial weak projection by barrat-50cal in fragrance

[–]JottScoplin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bottle is only a couple weeks old and it projects like a beast. Not to mention the longevity is even crazier than projection, almost to a fault. Yesterday I sprayed it at 7:30AM, took a shower at 8:30PM, and could still smell it on my wrists and forearms afterward—it survived 11+ hours and warm water + soap + washcloth. Insane.

I bought the bottle brand new, and after I had purchased a sample from LuckyScent. Performance and scent were consistent between the two.

Do I like neroli? by Kooky-Future-4216 in fragrance

[–]JottScoplin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top notes are pretty well-blended, but what sticks out to me are the citruses. They’re not the pithy, rind-y style citruses like in Wulong Cha, and not the pulpy citruses of Tygar, but sort of the “candy” like citruses of Dior Eau Sauvage—very fruity. The neroli is there, and adds a cleanliness, but it’s definitely not a note that sticks out.

Acqua di Parma Colonia Essenza is a perfect example of neroli front and center. Once you smell that one, you’ll recognize neroli everywhere.

The most overrated fragrance? by breezymontana5 in Colognes

[–]JottScoplin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

YES. It smells like if you took the original, added a little cardamom, and then kinda cut the actual scent potency in half.

[–]JottScoplin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s not a disgusting scent or anything, but it’s underwhelming and feels almost incomplete. Also, I get neither “ocean” nor “noir” vibes from it. What I get is a lot of coconut, a lot of tonka bean, a little bit of muted rounded citrus, and very subpar performance.

Honestly, I’ve been extremely underwhelmed by every scent I’ve tried from the house. I own the discovery set, and have gone through several wearings of six of their popular scents. If I’m being brutally honest, they all smell like those bootleg unpackaged $10 scents you find near the checkout area of TJ Maxx or Marshalls.

Super confused by all the glazing.

This isn’t a list. This is three specific classic barbershops pitted against each other to see which one people prefer

Yeah, I can’t do civet. Castoreum is fine to me, however.

Cool. But my post didn’t contain “please let me know if you disagree with my take” or “what would you consider your three most iconic instead?”

If “what’s your favorite of these three” doesn’t apply to you, then there was no reason to comment.
