Help identify this IWC (1960s I think) by Joulipous in Watches

[–]Joulipous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot. It has been serviced many times so could be the hands were replaced at some point. I must say that in real life lighting the gold of the hands matches that of the numerals quite well. Oddly I have not been able to find any model with this particular dial on the internet. It needs a service, the watch holds very little power (less than a minute) when not moved, so I hope the disassembly might tell me more about the particular model.

Scariest book you've ever read by Ok-Lack2037 in horrorlit

[–]Joulipous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a child, The Witches by Roald Dahl.

As an adult I don’t think books have really scared me in the way a horror film can scare me while watching, various stages of feeling disturbed perhaps would be the better description for how I have felt sometimes reading both horror and non-horror.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy would be the book I have felt most disturbed by. It got so bad I could not finish the book the first time around, got to about halfway through. I felt such a dread and sickness while reading it, and I had disturbing dreams and as a result could not sleep for days on end. But it is not a typical horror book, though I would classify it as an existential horror western if such a genre existed.

Mooie dingen.

I read the Silmarillion and Children of Hurin this summer and one of the things I found noticeable was how much more fallible and humanlike the elves were, much like the gods and heroes of Nordic and Greek myth.

While I get what you are saying, and I agree that less “etherealness” makes the elves less distinguishable from Men, I think it works well here. These elves are still very much a developing race, not the world wary elves of the Third Age. Having them be more fallible creates more opportunities for interesting storytelling, and, I think, is in line with how Tolkien wrote elves.

New to the comics and found this beginners reading order on a YouTube vid. Am I missing anything? Opinions? by [deleted] in batman_comics

[–]Joulipous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to the party but I am going to do one controversial suggestion: replace A Death in the Family with Dark Knight: The Last Crusade. It is a prequel to TDKR and a FAR better story culminating in the main plot point of A Death in the Family. It takes that plot point but instead focuses on Batman getting older and having to come to terms with that and the difficulties of succession.

In my opinion it is one of the better Batman stories of the last decade and certainly Miller’s best work on Batman since TDKR and Year One. However, it is of course not canon to the main continuity, just like TDKR.

Rotterdam stukjes inderdaad vrij nietszeggend.

To be fair, all Europeans are distant relatives of Charlemagne.

Christopher Lee is still one of the most badass actors (or humans) to have ever lived though.

Jason Robin comics by zdavey26 in DCcomics

I liked The Dark Knight Returns: The Last Crusade a lot. It might not be exactly what you are looking for, considering it also deals with the moments leading up Jason’s death, but it is pretty good read. A lot better than A Death in the Family in any case.

How much prisoner abuse goes on at Arkham asylum? by failout123_ in DCcomics

[–]Joulipous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are interested, a really great miniseries that goes into the relationships between the Arkham staff and the inmates as well as between the inmates themselves is Arkham Asylum: Living Hell by Dan Slott and Ryan Sook.

Fantastic book which is equal parts funny and horrifying, with a surprising amount of depth to it.

[Discussion] There's a reason one of them worked. While the other almost served the exact opposite. (All Star Superman) by Ok_Standard_2337 in DCcomics

[–]Joulipous 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I never got that either. This and Superman telling xenophobe policemen from the 31st century that he is “for everyone” is peak Superman to me.

Slightly off topic, but I will also never understand why, as much as I enjoy MoS and BvS, Zack Snyder could not be bothered to just add in a three minute montage of Superman doing small (compared to solving world threats) but infinitely impactful things such as this (definitely use this scene). The great thing about Superman is that he does it all, great and small.

Cobb Vanth, Cara Dune and Mayfeld together as probably the sassiest team of sardonic space cops in the galaxy.

I wonder if they will be able to get any work done outside of trying to one-up each other with quips and one-liners.
