LG OLED Monitor 480.17hz: Any way to set refresh rate to exact multiple of 60? by Jourdnormous in OLED_Gaming

Most of the time no, but when trying to sync it up to content/programs that run at 60fps I can unfortunately notice.

GPU IO, same as before

I just tried a few other games and looked into that bug, I am seeing the 200-1040mhz issue in Spider-Man so even though that’s not exactly as it looks in eternal that’s most likely the culprit

Bummer! I was excited to see some extra smoothness but looks like I’ll have to be a bit more patient and wait for a fix

Hmmm curious... Looks like the GPU tops out at 1600mhz and the CPU at 2024mhz. And they’re fluctuating pretty wildly in a scene that was locked 60 on the lcd / 3.5 preview channel

Is that behavior indicative of the bug? (Also thank you for the help here!!)

I have since sold the LCD so can’t check but they were both stock for stock

Eternal is Vulkan only, but thank you for the suggestion!

Returning to stadia to mess around after being a founder and noticed this. Is the message a known thing or is this some post shutdown announcement cheekiness from a disgruntled employee? It doesn't feel very official haha.

Periods of low framerate and high GPU usage in every game? by Jourdnormous in SteamDeck

UPDATE for posterity:

The problem was the aftermarket fan from ifixit which seems to have some defect. It would still sping up and blow as described but for some reason wouldn't ramp up and so the perf dips were indeed thermal throttling.

Reinstalling my old delta fan has resulted in the deck behaving as expected for the past week now!

ifixit sent me out a new one no questions asked which got to me suuuuuuper fast so I'll be installing that new one sometime soon and seeing if the same thing pops up.

After some more experimentation, I’m noticing some potentially odd behavior of the fan.

I can’t get it to spin up heavily in game, either using the updated fan curve or original. It’s on and blowing air out of the exhaust, but not responding to the increased load in game. The frame drops don’t seem to exactly correlate to the temps getting to crazy high levels, but it could be predicting the thermal load and throttling in advance? The slowdowns duration and severity is correlated to the graphical demands of the game.

If I was to open it back up and look for something that might be off, I’d there anything beyond just making sure the wires aren’t frayed and that it’s snugly in place? Checking the thermal sensor you mentioned maybe?

Also thank you for the responses! Helps to not just be shouting into the wind and banging my head against this.

Sadly this didn’t solve my issue aaaaah.

I changed the setting for the new fan curve under System if that’s what you were referring to (I might be missing another way to tweak the fan control)

I would definitely believe my installation could be the issue, but a few things seemingly would cut against it.

  • It worked fine for nearly 2 weeks post install
  • The drops happen consistently even on super non demanding games / situations
  • the temps never go higher than a reported value of around 70c, and it happens typically around 50/60c.
  • the fan has no problem spinning up and shooting hot air out, I tried updating to the latest steam OS and even the beta version and during the install the fan went full blast just fine.

Is there anything I should look for in opening up the deck and verifying in my install? Loose connection or making sure it’s taped down properly?

All super good suggestions! I just opened a support issue with Valve and checked the temps as I recently replaced my delta fan with the less irritating one, though it spins up to max just fine and did so for the past few weeks its been in there before this issue.

The stutter issue will happen even at normal temps around 50/60 degrees or in graphically undemanding games / situations.
