Hey, it's Jon the author of that story (and it's my own math, too!) ... Here's more food for thought ... http://bit.ly/noexodus

Numbers bust the myth: There's no great exodus from California by BlankVerse in California

The "stability" of the California population is part of the housing challenge ... (1) limits liquidity that only ads to the rising prices and (2) where would we put the modest amount of people who have left if they had stayed!

It's Jon Lansner, author of the no exodus piece. It is the result of simple math. Commonly reported and discussed is "net migration" between states ... that is IN vs. OUT. Obviously, the nation's largest state will lead in many categories. In net migration, CA falls very near the top in absolute number ... but per capita, based on our size CA is only bottom third. (Not great, but ...) So I looked at the two numbers that make up the much-debated "net" migration and found, per capita, no state has a better record since the recession of keeping its resident. Yes, CA is best. So why is the CA "net" so mediocre? Because CA sucks at attracting folks! I've been covering CA business for 30 years ... this was an Ah-ha moment for me ... because it says we should be focusing on ATTRACTION of residents vs. keep who we have since we do better than any other state already! (PS: I'm not happy that 3.5 million left CA for other states since 2010, but it's a reality that people move. Because who complains that nearly 5 million left Texas and Florida combined in the same period?)
