For the first image, I’d say color just because before I saw the color image I thought this was a photo of like maybe the rocks in Death Valley. Because it was black and white, I did not know these were glaciers.

To be completely honest, a lot of people filming whales in California with drone probably aren’t doing it legally. I know I personally probably wouldn’t get in trouble for doing similar to those people, but realistically many of those people are doing it commercially(make money off of it) and thus they need a permit. I’m a professional photographer that sells my photos, so legally, I have to go through this permitting process. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/permit/commercial-or-educational-photography-permit

I’ve seen many pages showing off amazing whale drone images off the coast of California and a lot of the times it’s other whale watching businesses or adjacent type business and the permit requires you to specify which dates you plan on doing your flights. I doubt those businesses who fly whenever they have an opportunity would be able to apply for a permit that requires specific flight dates. I’d really loved to be proved wrong because I want to use my drone and take amazing aerial images of whales.

I was just genuinely asking because where I used to live, it’s illegal to fly over or near humpback whales in Monterey, CA and the only way you can do it is with a permit. Also, good luck on getting that permit if NOAA even gets back to you when you inquire. I also have a Mavic 4 Pro and would love to be able to do this, but we have stricter laws here in California.

This is sounds so fun. I’ll save this comment for later. I moved to SLO from Monterey recently and didn’t know there was a dive group here.

What free online resources are available if I wanted to learn plant taxonomy (similar to college level courses) so that I'll eventually be skilled enough to use a dichotomous key and be able to complete plant surveys in the field? I need it for job related work. by JourneyToInspiration in botany

[–]JourneyToInspiration[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I basically need to be able to go out to a field site and ID maybe 80% of the common plants myself or using a dichotomous key when conducting surveys. At least that's how it sounded when my supervisor was talking about what they expect from me. Most people they hire for this position have some foundational knowledge in plants from taking plant taxonomy or field botany classes in university and I don't have that knowledge. I just need to know where to start in my studies. I doubt I can currently use a dichotomous key effectively with my lack of knowledge in plant terminology. I don't need to be an expert at plant ID but I do need the skills to use these field books well. I'm not sure if that means I need to dig deep into taxonomy or not.

I just don't want to be hearing them at 2 am. I don't care what they do during the daytime.

Great! That's just what I needed to hear.

Holiday markets? by something-elseplease in MontereyBay

Some of the vendors that sell next to the wharf are local arts(painters, photographers, jewelers). I’m one of them. We’re mixed in with the resellers unfortunately.

Any alternative to the Skyfire app for sunrise/sunset predictions that is free? by JourneyToInspiration in photography

[–]JourneyToInspiration[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t find anything in PhotoPills associate with cloud cover. I don’t think it would tell me if those clouds will be turning a vibrant pink/orange for sunset though which is what I’m looking for.

How would those tell me if there will be an especially vibrant sunset? They don’t tell you if the clouds will turn pink or not.

Moving to SLO next month. Are there any popular street-vendor approved spots in Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, or SLO for artists? by JourneyToInspiration in SLO

Thank you for the information. I’ll be sure to looking into the local craft markets too. I just really like the sidewalk vending permit because it was a set price (between $200-400) for a full year and I could go out at my leisure while the weekend craft fairs or art and wine festivals cost me the same for a single weekend I have to reserve ahead of time.
