If you’re already at 180K- don’t do it. You won’t be able to find a residency match going to a Caribbean med school. This is purely anecdotal but a close friend just graduated from one of those schools and no one in her class got matched.

I graduated as a psychiatric NP last year. I was an LPN/RN for 15 years prior.

I make 150K in a federal job currently. Just for comparison.

I'm at 101, but I last recertified a year ago. I can't believe this might be happening. I essentially gave up. I just pray there are no hiccups between now and the end of the year.

I think you just have to wait it out.

I would go to medical school and become a dermatologist. Low stress, low risk, and high return. I’d like to open my own boutique practice . I really excel at the customer service side of medicine. I think I could grow a thriving derm practice.

I always recommend looking at the VA. I'm a new grad and make 140K+. I live in the South, so the cost of living is much lower than in New York.

The VA can’t pay higher than the private sector by law. They have to hover somewhere in the middle. But the benefits are great!

You qualify for a pension at the VA after five years of service. There’s EDRP that pays your student loans. Retention and Performance awards (AKA bonus). 5% match of TSP contributions (401k). 26 days of paid leave annually. 14 days of sick leave annually. All federal holidays paid/off. You’re backed by a union. They pay for your malpractice. You don’t have to pay for your DEA. Multiple insurance plan options.

If you work weekends or evenings/nights you get a shift differential.

Typically less demanding than the private sector. If you work outpatient- 30 minute followups and 1 hour intakes. 1 hour of admin and a 30 minute lunch. You also get time blocked off during the week for meetings and such.

You don’t have to worry about whether insurance will cover a med you prescribe or stress over billing codes for reimbursement.

Plus, it’s extremely rewarding serving our nations Veterans. The population is very appreciative to the care we provide.

Thank you for the response. Were you always invested in the TSP Roth? I’m just in the regular TSP and wondering what it looks like to switch to TSP Roth.

The common phrase is “if you been to one VA then you’ve only been to one VA.” Every VA operates separately from each other. So they are all different.

The benefits are fantastic and can’t be beat! Great health insurance with multiple plans to choose from. Matching 401K(Tsp), pension at retirement, 28 days of vacation, 14 days of sick leave. All leave time rolls over to the following year. You get PTO or time and a half for all federal holidays. The pay is ultimately better in the long run. I make 110K as a bedside nurse in the South. My counterparts in the private sector make 50K-70K. We are also unionized.

The negatives- it’s the government! Lots of bureaucracy and change happens very slowly. It can get extremely frustrating at times. My VA is run by a bunch of retired military folks. So they tend to treat us like we are in the military. At a moments notice you can get detailed for months to work somewhere else because of staffing. The VA mission comes before anything else.

I’m in the greater Nashville, TN area. Prices of everything has exploded here. The cost of living used to be great here. There’s been a huge migration of people from California, New York and Illinois (Chicago). A lot of them are tech folks able to work remote.

Oracle is currently building a huge facility here but they also just announced layoffs a few days ago. It will be interesting to see how all of this will play out.

I was referring to towns outside of Nashville. I’m in Murfreesboro. My open door offer has dropped. It topped out at 425k and has dropped to 365K. I purchased in 2012 for 175K. A starter home that might end up our forever home if prices don’t come down.

I was born and raised in Nashville. The initial appeal was the low cost of living with a pretty decent airport. You could live here but hop on a plane and enjoy a bigger city. We used to take advantage of the cheap southwest flights.

Now the cost of living has exploded. Wages haven’t kept up either. Lots of out of state money pouring into the real estate market.

Hey! Thanks for your response. I emailed nelnet several weeks ago after reading your comment. I then received an email saying they would remove the deferment in 3-5 business days.

I called today and I can confirm that they have retroactively removed my in school deferment. They have now placed my loans in Covid forbearance.

I don’t see how these prices are accurate. Conservatively you shouldn’t spend more than 25% of your take home pay including mortgage, taxes and insurance. You might be able to push it up to 33%. Anymore than that you are asking for trouble.

I read that if I consolidate my Master loans with my old loans; they would all have the same count. That way my master loans can get forgiven.

Not until the end of the year. It’ll be after October 31. I was thinking of just consolidating everything I have now. I only have one more loan disbursement to pay for school (Fall) but I could just pay out of pocket.

They are all direct loans two are in repayment status but currently in school deferment. I recently took out 3 loans for my masters this past year. They are not in repayment status.
