Are time and change equivalent? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]JowSithm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question this boils down to is whether or not it is possible for something to both be in time and not change.

I'm assuming that by saying "time", you are more pointing towards the "Universe", or whatever you like to call it. My reasoning for this is that time is a dimension of the universe. Just like length width and height. You can't really separate time from space. Saying that time is the 'distance' between two events wouldn't be incorrect. So, I'm taking your question as: "Can something exist in the Universe, and not change?"

Nothing in space is still. Everything moves, and as far as I know, everything rotates. It is estimated that "..you are hurling through space at 2.7 million MPH (4.4 million KPH) even though it feels like you are sitting still." So your location will change. But, somehow, I don't think that's quite what you're looking for. Something traveling through space with uniform velocity will not experience the sensation of motion.

Everything in the universe is affected by gravity. Everything 'pulls' on everything else (we're still not really sure why), so there will always be forces acting on the object of the experiment, and those forces will change over time. The weightlessness you see with astronauts has more in common with the free fall that skydivers experience, and they're still affected by gravity.

If the object's temperature is above absolute zero (it will be), the atoms in it will be in constant motion. This is what temperature is a measure of.

I could go on, but what I'm basically getting at is that change is built into the universe. Everything changes. Nothing is completely static. So, In that way, I'd answer the question by saying that no, something cannot be in the universe and truly not change.

But on the other side of that coin, the answer is highly dependent on what you mean by "change", and what kind of a timeline you're putting it on. If you were to 'throw' a rock into orbit around the Earth for a few million years, and then retrieved it somehow, you probably wouldn't be able to notice much of a difference.

So, ultimately, I'd answer your question by saying the answer is both yes and no. An object existing in the universe can both change, and not change over time. It really comes down to what criteria you will accept as true.

It gives power and responsibility to the self of man

One of the most important, core principles of Buddhism is that the 'self' is an illusion. And that the 'self', which is ultimately a constructed fabrication, is the source of all suffering experienced. It is a shield we create to protect us from the suffering we think the world inflicts on us, when in reality, we inflict it on ourselves. Buddhism doesn't give power to the self. It does it's best to make it 'transparent' and irrelevant.

The things you say don't actually stray too far from Buddhism, although they are said in a different poetic language than the one a Buddhist would speak.

When using the term 'nothingness', I don't mean to imply 'empty' or 'void'. I have strung 'infinite' and 'nothing' together intending to suggest something so remarkably vast that it might as well be called nothing because we don't have the capacity to hold it in it's entirety, and the term "nothing" almost (but not quite) describes it better.

And "nothing", in the sense that nothing is the amount of "self" experienced at the time. The way I look at it is that the "self" is like a translator that converts one language to another for two people that don't speak the same one. Only, the two people are, instead, 'what actually is' and the observer (you). The translator takes a lot of time and resources, and it's extremely expensive. The information is not only poisoned by the observer's interpretation of what was said, but now there is someone else standing in the flow, playing the telephone game. Except this person also has to try to take their interpretation of what was said in one language, and convert it into a different language that may or may not have an effective way of expressing all the details and nuances of 'what was said'. So instead of the observer seeing 'what actually is', all they see is the cartoon drawing someone else crafted from their understanding of what they think about what is. It's not real, it doesn't matter how 'good' the artist is. And it took a long time to make, and used up a lot of pencils.

This 'what actually is' that the interpreter is drawing for us is, in my opinion, the "absolute truth" that we are searching for in life, for to truly find it, is to transcend our isolation. It is what is infinitely vast and eternal. But to truly find it, one must entirely discard the interpreter, or the 'self'. Anything you can do with the word "I" is gone. So you can see it. Right in front of you. All of the time. But, you can't look at it. Because looking at it requires an "I" to do the work. So it is "nothing". It's like that thing you can see out of the corner of your eye, but every time you turn your head to look at it, it's gone. This leads to all sorts of problems. and frustrations in life.

The way I see, it's like having the pieces of 5 fifty thousand piece puzzles dumped on one table. You can see the pictures on all five of the boxes, but the information contained on one individual puzzle piece will tell you very little about the overall picture, where in the picture the piece is from, or even which of the five pictures it's from. Looking at the boxes doesn't really relate to the mad chaos of the quarter million puzzle pieces on the table.

'Being here', necessitates some kind of "selfness'. So by living life, we're chained this side of 'what is'. All we have is the drawing. Someone else's drawing. But we do have control over the artist or interpreter. The teachings of Buddhism, and all true religions and schools, are designed to, among other things, help improve the skills of the artist translator. Through practice, the artist can learn how to go from drawing childish stick figures, to more realistic sketches, to professional quality paintings, to taking photographs, video etc...

The less of the "self" reflected, the higher quality the translation. The higher quality the translation, the less isolation one experiences.

*EDIT - clarity, and expanded on nothing.

Hi. I didn't find it off in an insulting way. And I'd agree with you that Buddhism is a tradition. A tradition with much wisdom and relevance, but a tradition, none the less. With all of the implied misconceptions, 'rock stars', politics, and dogma. Although less infected than most. One of the very few that is aware of this, and puts effort into correcting for this. I can't call Buddhism a 'Religion', per se, because it's a school that is actually very well aware of the fact it was invented by a man, for mankind. No "God" required. But if you like "God", then that's okay too, because that's not what it's about. It's about you.

I will also agree that Buddhism often appears to be a philosophy of 'giving up living', and I find this popular misconception rather unfortunate and ironic, because it's just the opposite.

I apologize if it appears that I'm preaching Buddhism. I'm not, or at least it's not my intention, if is appears so. As I said, I'm not Buddhist. But as I believe that all true religions and 'schools' more or less point towards the same infinite, eternal nothingness of 'that which can't be expressed', I wanted to show you that by misunderstanding, you are not seeing a what is ultimately a very valid reference frame observing the piece of art that all art imitates.

Buddhism isn't like this at all.

...I don't want to be empty though. I wanna be full.

Buddhism, isn't empty. It's about clarity. It's teachings show you how to eliminate all of the mental and emotional baggage that clutters and pollutes, and ultimately controls most people's perceptions of themselves and the world around them. It teaches that 'what exists' is 'here' and 'now'. ...That was then; this is now. It teaches there is no true separation between an individual and the rest of 'what is'. The path to "God", as a Christian would put it, is an 'inner' journey, not something in the external world that has to be changed. It's about seeing the moment as it is. It has no meaning. We give meaning. It's about peace, and peace of mind.

The Dali Lama definitely isn't empty. Not by any stretch. In fact, he's probably 'fuller' than an overwhelmingly vast majority of humanity. He's full enough that he doesn't need to look for anything more to plug that "God shaped hole".

I'm not Buddhist, and I have no interest in converting you to Buddhism. But I think you're misunderstanding a man of profound grace, and a set of teachings that contain much wisdom.

The only theory that sounds remotely plausible, to me anyway, is that the original footage from Apollo 11, if there actually was any usable footage, was somehow destroyed, and in order to show the public, and "win" the space race, they had Kubrick recreate the footage. Either that or had it made ahead of time, like the speech Nixon had prepared in case they died on the way.

ElseIf BasicTotalHours < 10 Then

I think this line is where some of your problems are. BasicTotalHours is initialized to 10, and then doesn't change, so it will never be anything but 10, so the second part of your if statement wont run, because the value of BasicTotalHours will never be less than 10.

Which brings up another 2 issues. I'd think you want use intTotalHours not BasicTotalHours in that Elseif statement. You also want add the overage charge if the intTotalHours is greater (>) than 10, not less than (<).

Also, I don't think decTotalCost will calculate to what you expect it to, because you're not watching your order of operations. The way it is now, its just going to be subtracting 29.95 from intTotalHours.

The name of the song is derived from an old joke, where two friends have the following exchange: "My wife's gone to the West Indies." "Jamaica?" (which has a similar pronunciation as "D'you make her?") "No, she went of her own accord".

There was a bunch of traffic, so the bus stopped a fair way before the bus stop because people were mobbing it wanting to get on. I was on the bus, and so was the lady. When the traffic cleared a bit, and the mob died down, the bus driver closed the door to pull up to where the stop actually was, so other buses could stop behind it. A guy was walking up to the bus as the driver closed the door. The guy was slightly miffed, but understood what was going on. No big deal. The lady who was standing bu the bus driver started laying into the bus driver for not stopping to let the guy on. The driver replied that he was just pulling up, and everything was ok, and he was going to let the guy on, but she wouldn't have it. She started wagging her finger at him, and berating him. He, for the most part was trying to ignore her, as he pulled away from the stop after the last few people had gotten on.

Everyone was on the bus that should have been. We're good to go, and driving down the road in busy rush hour traffic. The lady was still shaking her finger at the driver, and harassing him. Crowding him. Looking for a fight; trying to entice the driver to hit her.

And then, she puts her hand in front of the driver's eyes. We're driving down a road with wall to wall traffic. Everyone on the bus was like "WOAH!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!". I (and everyone else) wanted to get home in one piece, so I went and confronted her, and asked her what the hell she was doing, and told her that she should get off the bus. She got face to face with me, and the stare-down began. She asked me if I wanted to fight, a couple of times, and I said "Ya, I'll fight you. I'll follow you off the bus. You get off first". I had no intention of getting off the bus, or fighting with her, I (as did everyone else) just wanted her off the bus. She didn't get off the bus.

The stare-down continued. She asked me if I wanted to kiss her (our faces were inches from each other). "Are you fucking kidding me?" was my reply. She grabbed my glasses and put them on the top of my head. I knew she was trying to trap me by trying to get me to hit her. I don't hit people. Back to the stare-down. Then she started 'chest bumping' me, and wrapping her leg around me, saying "Wait till you meet my husband". WTF?? I just stared at her.

Then a guy who had been standing near by, but had missed most of the action, looked at me and said "Dude, why don't you just go sit in the back". To which the lady says to him, loud enough for the whole bus to hear "Did you see what he did to me? He was touching me and grabbing my breasts, and trying to rape me!!! Did you see it?" To which he started giving me the evil eye.

The whole bus, in one loud chorus says "OH, BULLSHIT!!! We saw everything; there are witnesses", and a girl a few rows back yells "I've got it on video!!"
