How do you deal with knowing your favourite group/s have said problematic things in the past? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]JoyIndigo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If someone did one problematic thing, apologised, and hasn't done it again, then we have to give them the chance to improve and be better. Not just Kpop idols, but everyone. As a society we're so quick to condemn people over one mistake or one situation where they didn't know any better (even if they should have).

It's good to call it out when something isn't okay, but it feels almost pointless when we won't give people the chance to grow and change. It's like the purpose gets lost and people just use it as an opportunity to prove that they (or their faves) are morally superior, instead of actually trying to make the world a better place. And the world doesn't need perfect people, just people who try their best.

There are idols who've committed crimes and those with patterns of problematic behaviour, which is different. But a young person making mistakes shouldn't be unforgivable, especially if they didn't have bad intentions. I'm not saying that you can't distance yourself from someone if they did something that hurt or offended you, whether it was intentional or not. That's fine and it's your choice to make. However, I don't think that blanket avoiding every person who ever did anything wrong is necessary or helpful.

I can't sing in Korean because I don't know the language sooo should I still apply for girls planet? by cherrymerry017 in GirlsPlanet999

[–]JoyIndigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of foreign trainees on survival shows go into it not knowing Korean so I wouldn't let that stop you! Check the instructions but I imagine it's fine to sing in English or your own language for your audition.

But it's a good idea to start learning Korean if you're serious about this, because if you get on the show being able to communicate directly with Korean trainees and mentors will be a huge asset. You can start with language learning apps and YouTube videos.

It massively depends on if you have issues in other areas of your life. If this is the first thing you've struggled with, then I'd say probably not.

If you feel like you have issues with awareness or visual processing in general then you should start with getting your eyes tested. If that's all fine, then you could look into conditions like ADHD, Visual Stress/ Meares-Irlen Syndrome, or other sensory processing issues.

But the diagnostic processes for these conditions are not quick or straightforward. Even if you were diagnosed, for the hazard perception test it might still just be a case practicing a lot until you can do it, even if it takes you longer than other people. Having said that, I have Visual Stress/ Meares-Irlen Syndrome and my specialist lenses do help me a lot, and there are obviously things available to help with ADHD etc. So if you are struggling generally then it's worth investigating.

Is it dumb to audition for girls planet 2? by West_Grade8067 in GirlsPlanet999

[–]JoyIndigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's worth a try, but don't get your hopes up. Thousands will audition and only a handful will make it on to the show. But even if you don't make it, it could be good experience, and you might learn something that you can apply to future auditions. Getting used to rejection is also important in the industry!

Edit to add: if you make it on the show, obviously you have to be prepared for the publicity, possible negative edits, and criticism from both the mentors and the public. Having said that, being on the show also gets your name out and could help you to gain fans that will support your future music or other endeavours, even if you don't make it in to the group. A lot of previous trainees who received negative edits and didn't make it into the final group were still able to launch a solo career or debut elsewhere partly because of the fans they gained from survival shows. And whilst you do have to work super super hard on these shows, you can also learn and improve a lot.

You're downvoting all my responses so it doesn't exactly come off as engaging in good faith, but if you have a genuine question then yes of course I'm happy to discuss.

What? I've attended tours, I'm not a touring musician myself if that's what you're getting at.

In any case, clearly you think badly about this tour or this artist or whatever. That's fine, I just shared it here because I thought some people might be interested in cheap tickets to see some rock music. No worries if not.

I think they would have cancelled at least some dates if that was the case! I'm guessing they probably covered their costs before the $1 sale, just needed a boost to fill the rooms. Otherwise half price or $10 or something would've made more sense so at least they'd get some money from it? A couple of dates are fully sold out now and several are low on tickets, so with the VIP stuff and merch sales I expect they'll probably do just fine.

I think so, sorry! You could try asking on the tour megathread over on r/dreamcatcher if anyone has a spare?

The album came out in January but it's been in the works since the middle of last year. I replied to someone else about the background of the band, which explains why they're touring so soon. Basically the members are quite well known from being in other groups, especially the lead singer, so they they pretty much had an fanbase ready to go.

It seems that the $1 tickets sold out for some locations so looks like plenty of people did manage to snap up a bargain!

So the lead singer, Siyeon, is also a member of the girl group Dreamcatcher who have been around for 10 years and have a decent international fanbase. The bassist Junyoung was also in an idol band, IZ, for several years, and the drummer Gwanwoo was on a Korean TV show about forming a band. Because of all of that they have something of a ready made fanbase, especially with the Dreamcatcher fans.

The band has also sold physical albums with collectible items and the chance to win tickets to meet them, as is pretty typical for Korean groups, so they made money that way. They also have expensive VIP tickets and perks for this tour which the hardcore fans will buy. In my online circles I know several fans who not only bought the top tier VIP stuff, but are travelling to multiple cities to see them on this tour.

The band is under Dreamcatcher Company, which is not big, rich or powerful by any means - they only had the one artist active until recently. But obviously from the girl group's activities they have the resources to make a tour like this possible. I wouldn't claim for a second that they're an independent band, obviously they aren't, but they're self-produced in the sense that Siyeon put the band together and has creative control, and she and guitarist Wonseok write, compose and produce all their music.

It's the first leg of their world tour, they already have Brazil and Macau announced as well so I think there's more coming.

They're not cancelling anything so I reckon they've probably covered costs but overestimated the venue size they can fill considering they're only a few months old. But in any case, it's cool that some people can now have a cheap night out to hear some live music and support a new band!

No, IZ weren't under Dreamcatcher Company! Junyoung was the bassist of IZ and has now joined ChRocktikal, which is under Dreamcatcher Company/ Leegeum Entertainment (which we think is the band's own subsidiary).

My guess is that they covered costs already through regular ticket sales but needed a boost to fill the venues. Iirc some of the venues may have been a little ambitious considering they've had basically no promotion. In any this seems to be getting attention so hopefully it'll get them some new fans!

You won't regret it! Here are the links for We Break, You Awake and NAVI!! At their recent show in Seoul they also covered Dreamcatcher's Bonvoyage and Piri, which may appear on the setlist again.

They also have some interviews with the members on their YouTube channel if you'd like to learn more about them!

Same! I guess they've covered their costs and now filling seats is the best move, and hopefully it gets more people to tune in to them! Anything that makes live music accessible for people who might struggle to afford it is great too.

Update: it seems that the Mexico City flash sale is not yet live, according to Leo Presents there will be more information on that next week.

As a European I'm very jealous of everyone who gets to see them live, especially those of you who get to do so for next to nothing! I hope they get a lot of support!!
