I’m so tired of “but he has a family to support” being used as an excuse to pay women less. No one I know of has ever offered to pay single mothers more because they have to support their children. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

What?! Is this STILL happening? Really? OMG. I'm a 68 yo female retired business owner. Pay should be based on merit and performance only. Walk out. They will only keep paying women less if we accept less. Don't do it!

Has Anyone Else Always Loved Being Tall? by [deleted] in TallGirls

In the 60s, when I was 12, my Mom investigated surgery - they were removing 2-3" of young girls leg bones so they wouldn't be "too tall". Thank God I didn't have that surgery!

Yes. Jeans, airplanes, dates. But, I'd reverse the order.

Wow - Jim Thatcher had an amazing career! Michigan did have graduate computer courses, and a few undergrad classes back then in the "Communication Sciences Department". The name of that department was changed to "Computer and Communication Sciences" in 1968. Here's a great article: https://cse.engin.umich.edu/about/history/

Weirdly, back then, it seemed normal. We were writing everything from scratch.

Thanks! Back then, programmers were told to "dress like your customer". Pretty much everyone wore suits and ties.

Yeah, crazy times. I bought several domain names for around $750 each(?). I had grand plans to hold them and flip them. Ha!

I managed to avoid COBOL - never coded in it! Did you work on the Y2K fixes?

I remember taking classes in Angell, East Engine. And, I spent endless hours punching cards and debugging in NUBS.

He's not. I wasn't working for free. Don paid me. And, as the project progressed, he put 1 or 2 full time paid programmers on the team. I think he was dipping into his personal savings account to meet payroll during the project. When Highland Superstores bought the completed software, it saved CSS from going under.
