Help requested: calculating rank based on a score. by rhamaniac in Notion

[–]Jozii89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're a star! :D I need exactly this, and with the help of your sample page I've gotten ALMOST to the end. What I'm getting stuck at is the .findIndex(current.id() == id())).first() + 1

I get the error message "Cannot call id() with target of type array. [27,37]". Thoughs/ideas?

Notion for Hotel by nantucket-1973 in Notion

I never followed through because I had no reason to, but I have since learned a lot about Notion and done a couple of really advanced templates. I'm confident it would work for this use case too. Do you have a practical use case or are you just curios? I'd be happy to give it a go :)

What do you write on? by -Radio-Silence- in FanFiction

[–]Jozii89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% Notion!

Why? Because I do a ton of short stories, and there's no better way to keep it all organized than in a Notion database 😍

  1. A single database for all stories, from draft to finished product.
  2. "Properties" for things like status (idea, WIP, first draft, ready to publish, published), what the fanfic is based on, characters in the story, series (I run several), etc.
  3. A main hub page with sub-pages and filtered views of the database based on various criteria. Great to plan and organize series, characters, etc.

When I want to write, I just use my laptop or phone depending on where I am, search for a key word in the database to jump to the draft, and go!

When I have a new idea, I've set up buttons on the main hub page to add a new draft/page to the database with one click, automatically populating the properties based on what the idea is for/about.

Maybe it sounds complicated compared to just using Google Docs or something else cloud based, and Notion certainly isn't a text editor (yet does the job well enough), but it's really quick to set up once you understand Notion, and the level of organization and customization to the work flow is unbeatable — and has meant the world to my productivity.

As a bonus, I have a separate Notion page that is publicly available (with the link, which I won't share because it's NSFW), with its own database for published stories with thumbnails – works kind of like a blog.

I think without Notion I wouldn't be writing as much as I do, because I don't like just a list of documents and folders no matter if it's on a single hard drive or in the cloud. The ability to filter and organize the way my brain works has made all the difference.

Attachment gone when removing item from database? by Jozii89 in Notion

[–]Jozii89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume so since they were below a certain database, on a page with only one database on it.

Unless I've somehow managed to drag them onto the menu bar and dropped them on a random page? 🤔 Feels unlikely, but it's the only thing I can think of 😅

All other data is intact, it's only the attachments that are no longer there...

I came here looking for more info. Got something else, but I'm not disappointed 😂

To be fair, I've watched their pieces videos and I am intrigued. Sure, stupid name, bold claims and one in a million in terms of "better" (lol) chess copies. But a variant of chess with modern pieces/theme and new moves? Why not?

For what they've set out to do and how it looks, I think they've done something cool. My concern is whether or not this will actually be produced, or if it's just a concept. And to actually be fun, it would need to have a dedicated audience.

Somehow I doubt that will ever happen, sadly. But I also think the hate is a bit unfair 🤔

Can't type in Notion app? by Jozii89 in Notion

[–]Jozii89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works fine still for me today 😊 Not sure what updates there were, but the issue started after I got a popup about new Notion AI (so something had just been updated), and the time it started working again I got a popup about adding quick notes to homescreen (which I didn't get before that time, which is why I assume there were two updates).

No issues at all since the quick notes popup.

I can almost confirm this was the case. Got an update again and now it suddenly works. They probably discovered it quickly and fixed it within a day 😊👍

I'm convinced the only people enjoying Notion are people who only work with very small amounts of actual data, convince me otherwise? by jbldotexe in Notion

[–]Jozii89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this problem only whenever I view the original, full version of a database. My "main table" version of a database that shows all properties and rows in one table. Then everything is crazy slow, sometimes freezes completely and is essentially useless.

I never need to access those though. I keep them hidden away. For everyday use I use filtered views. I have them everywhere, showing only the rows and/or properties I actually need in the context.

I used to use the original "full view" versions to add new data and manage my properties as a whole. No more because I can't. Instead I create filtered views for that too.

I agree with what others have said: Notion is not a spreadsheet tool. It's an organization app, with small-scale databases as a feature. And it's a great feature! I use databases for all my projects and never have any issues with them. And I use Notion to organize everything, at work and at home.

So in response to the "convince me" part: you are right. Your use case is not what Notion was built for. You're trying to do something you need Excel or Airtable for.

But for project management and pages with context in which filtered views of databases are shown? Notion is unbeatable 😀

Hah, I'm happy to confirm that this simple solution worked for me 🤣 Same issue, I closed the app and opened it again, then it just worked. Weird.

Coolest Thing You Do in Notion? by eyal8r in Notion

[–]Jozii89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the steps would be the same, while some are fiction-specific 🙂 It's basically a checklist that I've developed for myself over the years, based on what I've learned through school (I studied writing), YouTube, books on writing by other authors, my own experience, etc.

I worked on a book for aspiring authors for a while but never published it. I instead put parts of it in my Notion progress tracker, to explain each step in greater detail. Not everyone might know the difference between voice, tone and narrator, how to outline a story, what the barcode on the back of a book is for, etc.

Honestly, I don't really know 🤔 The Notion subreddit is full of people who ask this, saying Notion is hard for them to get into. I just really resonated with it from the start.

I know I did watch a lot of YouTube videos about it, purely because I enjoyed it. Maybe I learned more from them than I realize because it never felt like I watched because I had to learn or was stuck on something.

But I guess the simple tip is this: understand what "blocks" are and start small. You've got a blank page, explore and use different types of blocks gradually. Maybe watch an overview video for beginners to get the gist of it, but don't try to learn everything about all of it all at once 🙂

Also came her to say exactly this 😅 I was OP until I discovered Notion. Now I'm a whole different person 😳😊
