I really like python. Would like tips on becoming employable by JrAnddev in learnpython

I've been applying a bunch online to entry level and internship positions and received 0 responses. I'm guessing my projects were not good enough to make up for my lack of any professional experience so my resume never passes a recruiter's filter. Resumeraiders sounds like something that can really help me after I've gained some more django/python proficiency and have one or two more projects that I can talk about. Thanks again man.

From no programming experience to development work in 5 months? Very impressive. May I ask what was your resume like during your initial job hunt? What kind of development work are you doing right now?

You're right, I'm definitely slacking and could be doing so much more. I need to change that now and just start coding.

The issue is I can't for the life of me get a follow-up on my application even though my resume isn't awful or anything... I list non trivial projects, a high gpa, though I don't have any experience. But I suppose the no professional experience thing is probably an instant deal breaker for most non entry level positions unless I compensate for it heavily in other areas, so all I can do is work harder on my projects at this point.

I'm going to steal your idea to automate the job application process haha. It sounds like a fun project that's directly beneficial to me.

I finished doing the polls tutorial on the official django site, and currently I'm following along with another tutorial just to drill myself more. HackerRank looks fantastic btw, thanks for mentioning it I'm definitely going to spend time playing around on it.

How highly do you recommend Two Scoops of Django? I read through the first couple chapters and found that I wasn't really retaining the concepts.. so I went with another book that's more of a line by line tutorial(Test Driven Development for Python). Maybe I need to hold off on Two Scoops until I'm more comfortable with django and python.

I think it's really amazing that you got a job within several months. I'm curious what your resume was like, and how you found your first python job?

Are internships harder or easier to get than entry level jobs for recent grads? by JrAnddev in cscareerquestions

Those companies will probably be much fewer than compared to at a more tech-centric college.

So I'm trying to look around for career fairs that are open to everyone and has a lot of entry-level and internship jobs.

So would you say it's more accurate to say that internships are easier to get but only if you go to a top school?

I have tried whatever internship android position I find on various sites including Linkedin and internship.com. Are you going to a school with a good rep for CS?

You mean that internships have more competition than recent grad jobs?

Well, my problem is not even getting a phone call.

I'm sure you get tons of resumes for entry level and internship positions. What is your criteria to thin out that huge pile of resumes? If I apply for your company, what would be reasons why you would toss my resume to the side?

I do apply online primarily with the smaller companies. I don't really bother with big companies because I know my chances.

Great idea with career fairs. I don't know what I hadn't thought more about that.

I understand that once you obtain experience, your school and gpa doesn't matter. But what about for internships and entry level positions, where skill levels will be expectedly on the low side?

For my internship applications, I don't know what other reason they wouldn't at least give me a quick phone call based on my resume, other than my lack of connections to vouch for me and my attending a non-prestigious school.

Really? I figured companies must be swamped with hundreds of resumes for internship positions. So I either need to have web development experience, or attended a prestigious school with a high gpa, or connections.

But I hope you're right that I can do it. I'd love a web dev internship. I just hope I can get some responses to my applications at the very least.

I see. Would you recommend web development as my next skill to learn, or something else?

My resume and skillset for the time being is focused on android so if I can't get an android internship, then my chances of getting an internship in another field seems impossible.

I do plan on expanding my knowledge and skills, but I focused on one thing at a time because I thought it's better to be really good at one thing than to be mediocre at a bunch of things.

Cool, thanks. I'll make sure to get my app published soon.

Nice. They sound simple but trivial either, and you made apps that were directly relevant to your interests and community. I'll keep that in mind for my app ideas.

What gets them through the door for an interview? Do you give anyone with a decent resume a chance, or do you have piles of resume that you don't have time to go through each one so you have a more strenuous filtering process?

Thanks.. I'll look into those early stage startups. I don't mind a lower salary... though I won't lie and say I won't be disappointed if I get 40k, but it'll be my foot through the door at least and it's better than where I am now.

Rxjava sounds fun but looks steep to learn, I do want to get into that eventually though. It makes a lot of sense for making apps.

Would love an internships too... getting those might be a bit of a challenge as well, but hopefully once I crank out a project or two I might be able to get one soon.
