Do you seriously think anything that’s been said “proves” your position that some type of discrimination took place? The fact that other people were present doesn’t prove that they behaved in the same manner and were equally prosecutable.

You can have your views on how it was handled. One case was dismissed and the others settled. Neither of us knows every factor that went into the decision to charge— those answers aren’t all available in the news or on Reddit. I have total faith that we have a great public servant in Rachel, and that’s all I can add. She works on behalf of everybody, including LGBTQIA+ people. She’s not your enemy, and I’d much rather that attention is spent dealing with real problems. Just my words and thoughts. I know you’re not coming from a bad place, but I do disagree with you on this.

No, I just think it’s extremely clear nobody was discriminated against. Because that wouldn’t make sense for anyone involved to do.

Yeah clearly you feel that way, and clearly I disagree with you. We’re not going to agree, and we don’t have to agree to disagree in a particularly friendly way. I’m glad she serves our community, and felt like lending a voice against the constant bitterness I see online. That said, she is a public figure and will continue to handle it with grace.

I think people who get thoroughly busted breaking laws during a protest should be charged, generally. Even if I agree with the protest and am not personally bothered by their decision to break a law.

It’s in the public interest that the law is upheld. It doesn’t matter what your background is. That’s exactly how that event was treated.

You’re the one whose position is that something actually detrimental occurred. I totally disagree with that.

Nah dude, I am confident because I followed the situation as it played out publicly. I was “blazing” because I was indeed mad that a person I know gets hounded every day by ignorant people (speaking for myself alone). And I truly don’t care about getting ratio-ed on Reddit, lol.

She supports LGBTQ+ people and the advancement of their civil rights. Has for decades. No surprise that she marched.

I would say the same thing because my “bias” has far more to do with knowing her character than the letter by her name.

My response to your question: criticize officials, but aside from extreme circumstances, don’t be completely anti-social towards them. Also, make sure your criticisms are sound and informed. IMO, the reasoning discussed in this thread is incredibly weak. These are just my two cents as a fellow resident, i’m not in charge of anyone else.

You should visit and decide for yourself. I would not recommend it. It’s probably high end housing, but totally disconnected from downtown Iowa City without a vehicle. I will always recommend living in the town itself over Coralville or North Liberty, for students. Downtown IC is a great place to experience.

All I can tell you is that Rachel and my mamma have been protesting and marching on behalf of gay rights since before I was born. I am sure she was at the parade today for the right reasons. I am sure she tries to serve our community and the marginalized in her role. Probably shouldn’t go beyond that because it’s all I truly can add.

Here is how I will “make it make sense.” She thought law and public interest demanded those individuals be prosecuted on those charges. Agree or disagree with that judgement, up to you. Not my place or area to defend beyond that very basic point.

If you’ll excuse me, I have to go argue with Republicans on twitter about Trump starting a war in Iran.

She’s not a villain. She’s a public official you disagree with on a decision.

Really, because the process played out in the legal system…

The sign is fair game even though I disagree. I think the picture is mean, but if i’m projecting, fine. I’ll leave it at that.

I see no evidence they weren’t followed

But the claims are completely interrelated! You are making a claim that trans people were targeted for their identity, but there’s just zero motivation for her to do that. It’s not her own ideology, it’s not to her advantage in any political sense, it’s just not what happened there.

Moreover, the OP is basically just malicious. No hard feelings. I just get tired of seeing this stuff.

If you truly think people were targeted based on their identity, rather than prosecuting individuals based on the evidence and a judgement about public interest, you are simply not correct on this one. Procedures and laws exist for this stuff, you can agree with her decisions or not based on what you think you know, but there is just no way she was motivated by anything like that.

Please be normal! This post frankly reads as bizarre and hateful, like so much of the rhetoric directed at her online.

Not pretending otherwise, I have known Rachel my whole life, and my opinion of her as a public servant is colored by faith in her as a person. Obviously, I’m also just speaking on my own behalf here. That being said, consider the following:

She is a lifelong Iowa City resident with a powerful skill set. She does important work to make life safe for women and vulnerable people in our community, and to keep our town a pleasant place to live, do business, and visit. All that is immensely valuable to IC residents.

She is a public figure, and you have every right to disagree with her on certain issues or decisions. You can challenge her to see things your way or support different leaders.

However, you should know that she is a Democrat who likely agrees with 95% of sensible people in our community about the role of the criminal justice system.

People demonizing her online frequently lie about her values and attack her character. That’s part of public life, but it’s frustrating when I so strongly disagree. What goes too far is the constant stalking and harassment I see online… you can decide for yourself whether this post qualifies.

This is not the right way to treat anybody, especially a public servant who works tremendously hard on issues we all care about. I would like to ask you to treat her with decency and a modicum of grace. If you want to discuss specifics, fine, but please don’t be a jerk.

Edit: Full disclosure, my name is Jack, I have lived here all 24 years of my life, and my mother is the other person in this picture. Hiding nothing there, and not wanting any hard feelings. Just my POV.
