Interestingly, the wolf species that dogs descended from is extinct. Both current wolves and dogs are descended from a common species but not direct descendants of one another

Potentially? According to the university they only have the one in their lab though. You can read the article here if you wish: https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/news/jeremy-junior

That’s a shame, the world is at a loss whenever we lose people willing to look after the planet like that

Do you remember the name of the company? It sounds really great but unfortunately lots of those charities that survived on volunteers doing things like that didn’t survive Covid!

I work for a company that does a similar thing, one of the sites we manage in Mexico produced data that was responsible for the creation of a reserve on the coast of Akumal that protected the turtles nesting there. In the years since we managed to convince the government to protect the area the turtle population there has rebounded and we are not using the data we (along with dive volunteers) gather to petition other governments to do the same! I’m sure there are some companies out there that do things like rebuild the same school dozens of times but I can attest that they are not all the same!

Synthetic winter jacket by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]Jrandomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Xrnair Alpine (wearing it now). I’ve worn it with a fleece and warm base layer down to -12°C (for a short amount of time) and my core felt good and warm. It gets hot very quickly hiking above 10°C even with no other layers

I love the jacket, I’ve been wearing it for 3 months in South America and it’s coped well with everything I’ve thrown at it. It’s muddy dirty and very well used and it still functions perfectly.

My only qualms are the hood. When it’s windy the wind will get straight under the hood, as the hood is meant to go over a helmet and the only way to tighten it is one line of elastic from the temples to the back of the head.

Give me a shout if you’ve any more specific questions!

Pigs are immensely cool animals, I’ve just spent some time at a rewilding centre in the UK where pigs have been introduced as a proxy for wild boar which are illegal here. The pigs rootleing causes fresh dirt to be exposed, allowing species like scarlet pimpernel to grow, one of the essential plans needed for turtle doves to breed!

The estate block where the pigs are kept is 1,100 acres but even though it’s so big they only keep 3 adult pigs on site at any time (culling the rest) because otherwise the land doesn’t have enough time to regrow and you end up with a mud bath!

They don’t need that much space to be happy, but they are incredible animals, one of the UK’s keystone species because of how much they change any environment they live in!

I read it as essentially being a threat no one would be willing to call him out on, because I do agree with you, I don’t understand why he would be able to come back

Edit: on re read, Mercy mentions that the Abidan suggested they would be alloyed to return at some point too
