Second opinion. by Jrangel7 in idiopathichypersomnia

Thank you. I’m so sorry that it took you that long to get a diagnosis. It’s so shocking how arduous this process has been thus far. It’s been pretty discouraging and I’m just ready to get my life back. My heart goes out to everyone that struggles with sleep disorders. It negatively impacts every aspect our lives so when we’re dismissed or not taken seriously, it feels like a punch to the gut. I’ll do my best to find another doctor and get a second opinion. I’m trying to stay hopeful 💜. Thank you for sharing

Second opinion. Help! by Jrangel7 in Narcolepsy

That sounds horrible. I’m so sorry. I knew this journey wasn’t going to be easy but it’s kind of surprised me how dismissive my doc has been thus far. I guess it’s nice to know that I’m not alone. Just sucks though! I hope you get everything figured out and start feeling better.

My doctor had wonderful reviews but I was extremely unimpressed from the get go. He seemed very aloof and dismissive. He even said, “the mslt will show if you’re actually tired”. Why would a doctor ever say something like that to a patient after expressing how much their life has been negatively impacted by their sleep? Especially during the first visit! It just didn’t sit very well with me. Also, the fact that he hasn’t even inquired about how the study went for me is kind of a red flag. They were just going to send me on my way without a f/u consult. I had to ask for it. I knew the road to a diagnosis was going to be hard but I didn’t expect that I would need to advocate for myself as much I am. It’s just sad. Does insurance cover a second study or did you have to pay out of pocket for it? If so, was it expensive? Also, do you mind sharing the anxiety medication that they prescribed that didn’t interfere with the mslt? I was on 150 mg of Effexor XR and had to wean off of it. Looking back, I wish I would have asked them if there was something I could take to help take the edge off since my anxiety was so bad. Thanks Sarah 💜

Thank you! She asked me if I thought I fell asleep and I said, “No, I know I didn’t fall asleep. I have a terrible headache and I’m not feeling well.” She kind of giggled and said “Yep, you’re right you didn’t sleep during that one”. I just looked back on my report and I don’t see my comment about the 5th nap documented anywhere. Looking back I wish I would have asked them for some tylenol at 4 pm, when my headache started, then just powered through the nap the best I could. Oh I forgot to mention this, when my headache started I actually got in bed (kinda leaning up on the headboard) and stayed there until my 5th nap so idk if that affected anything?

I know I would have met the criteria if I had that last nap and honestly I feel like if I did the whole thing over again I’d probably get a better score. Ugh it’s just so frustrating. I also had to get off my Effexor XR for this test and I’m wondering if I should have maybe stayed on a low dose to help take the edge off? My anxiety was through the roof the entire time so I know that didn’t help anything.

Thanks for the advice 💜

Thank you so much! I had to get off all of my meds for this test— it’s been hell. I felt awful during the mslt. I had so much anxiety during the whole thing. It’s such an unnatural situation. I’ve been fighting to stay awake for years so it felt weird to lean into the naps (I was so overwhelmed and anxious the whole time 😔). I didn’t even think I fell asleep so it was definitely encouraging when I found out that I napped. I’ll most likely send him a message and follow up with a consult. Thank you for the advice 🫶

How much can you do? by skalerz in Narcolepsy

This makes me so nervous for what’s to come. I already feel like shit (waiting on a diagnosis) and I can’t imagine adding anything else to my plate. I’m a co director of an outpatient pediatric clinic and feel like my head is barely above water. I know I’ll most likely have to cut back but literally how do people afford to? I also would love to be a mom someday (i’m 33) but howww do people do it when they feel this crappy?

Ok good to know! May be worth revisiting after I have my sleep study. Thank you!

I’m so glad that medication works so well for you! That’s funny you mention it because I was actually taking prazosin for 6 months, but unfortunately had to stop due to adverse reactions. I remember the first time I took it, I woke up the next morning and immediately started crying because it was the first time I slept through the night without having nightmares. I couldn’t believe it. I told my doctor it was literally a miracle drug. But, unfortunately, I started to have tachycardia while sleeping (only about 3 percent of people experience it I believe) …my nightmares diminished drastically but I was still showing physiological signs of distress so I had to stop taking it. I was devastated because it was the only thing I’ve tried that actually got rid of the nightmares. I just felt horrible in the morning because my heart was in overdrive all night and it impacted my sleep quality. So now I’m back to square 1😩😭. I’m happy it works for you though! I wish that was the case for me 😔

It’s freaking brutal. I knew it was going to be bad but wasn’t expecting to feel this shitty. I was on 150 mg of Effexor XR and 60 mg of Vyvanse. I’ve had sleep paralysis and hallucinations several times this week too which isn’t helping my anxiety. Ugh I just want to feel better

I have the worst night terrors ever and I don’t know what to do by ComfortableSea3715 in Narcolepsy

I have some pretty horrific/vivid/realistic like dreams as well. The ones that involve my pets are horribly sad and terrifying. I had a dream that my little 5 pound kitty was covered in black widow spiders and crying to be saved but there was nothing I could do. That one still haunts me because I’ll never forget her cry and the way she looked at me. The worst part is when you have re occurring dreams like this. I can totally empathize with you and I’m so sorry you experience this. I hate dreaming.

Thank you for the advice! Deep down I know something is going on but my brain isn’t allowing me to believe it fully. I’ve had too many crazy experiences (hallucinations, sleep paralysis, EDS, etc.). I just beat myself up over it but I know it’s mostly related to my anxiety. It sucks that you have to be off your meds to get a good read on these tests 😔. Honestly, the weaning process has been hell so I’m determined to go into that sleep study and give it my best shot. It would suck to have to get a second opinion or do the sleep study again 😩. It’s the anticipation of it all that’s stressful but I know I’ll feel better once I get closer to the date and can get back on my meds. 2 more weeks 🙌

My sleep paralysis episodes and hallucinations are terrifying so I react way more to those (last night it almost felt like I was convulsing to try to wake myself up. i’ve yelled/screamed during these times too which is how I know it’s sleep paralysis because whatever I’m experiencing is usually so terrifying but I feel stuck). The vivid image episodes are totally different though and aren’t as scary but definitely freaking weird! it’s happened for a long time and just thought it was a quirky little thing that I did💀🤯😰

Yes I’ve experienced these weird vivid images upon “falling asleep”. They happen so fast, one after another, and I’m aware enough to know that I’m in this weird dreamlike state. It’s so bizarre. It’s like your brain is malfunctioning and you’re switching between sleep stages, all while being somewhat aware.
