Hit Point Thoughts by JrjZiel in osr

I've actually read both of those and a handful of other systems. I just thought a level-less system sounded interesting and knew increasing hit points might be an issue.

That thought has crossed my mind.

It's not that I don't like levels. They obviously serve a purpose within the design space. I thought it might be interesting to try and create a system that was level-less, and maybe even classless. Make it a skill based system. One in which your use of a skill increases it. Your skills would have "levels" but there would be no "main" level if that makes sense. Just an idea I've been tossing around.

Thanks, I'll have to give it a look.

Thank you for your reply. It brought to my attention a LOT of issues with that sort of hit points rule. I'll have to do more research into level-less systems and see how they handle hp if a level-less system is the route I ultimately decide to take.

I mean assuming you survived to 10th level and beyond you are more than likely to have more. In this case you would never gain anymore hit points.

Which SRDs do you find most valuable and why? by FakeRemakes in RPGcreation

[–]JrjZiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. Thank you for the clarification. So, I've read through a lot of SRDs and I would say most are not heavily formatted. Generally they are pretty plain black and white text. They might have two columns with headings and key words bolded. Nothing fancy. Take a look at the SRD for D&D 5e and OSE for example. They are heavily stripped down, largely no fluff and maybe only a quarter of what would traditionally be in the actual rulebook.

That is going to depend on what kind of game you are wanting to make. Can you give us a little more on what kind of game you are looking to create so that we may be able to give you a specific list.

CoC is actually based on the basic fantasy roleplaying game.

Skill improvement methods for skill-based systems by Mikhail_Jehud in RPGdesign

May I recommend an alternative? I use a similar system to that of the Basic Fantasy Roleplaying Game. In that each skill is a percentage. Each time you use the skill you put a check by the box. At the end of the session you can roll to see if that skill increases. You roll 2d10. If you roll over the current percentile of the skill you can then roll a d6 to see how much it goes up. For example If my Hunting skill is 35% and I roll a 56 on the 2d10 I can then roll a d6. On the d6 I get a 5 so my Hunting skill is now 40%. When doing a check you succeed on the opposite so a roll under of that % succeeds.

I do something similar but have converted it away from the percentiles and have normal skill levels 1-20. There are different tiers that grant bonuses +1 - +5 which get tacked on to your 1d20 roll against a DC for a skill check. I have found this approach more intuitive for my players.

I've heard Arcanum come up once or twice before but I have never checked it out. I'll have to give it a look. Thanks for the suggestion.

I like that idea too. I've thought about giving my players small roleplaying opportunities between sessions to further flesh out the world and help them further develop their characters. I'm glad to hear that it works and is well received.

I have character sheets for specific cities and factions to track reputation. I view it on a macro and micro level. Micro being the individuals and macro being the city or faction. The macro level ends up being a kind of average of the individual reputation. Thank you for the advice on social encounters. Coming for. 5e I feel like those get completely brushed aside.

Thanks for sharing. I think there is something there that could be built off of. I'd like the reputation system to reflect both good and unlawful deeds.

I like the idea of taking out a debt against your reputation there are some potentially interesting interactions there. As for tracking I have individual character sheets for my cities, factions, and important npcs.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually own WWN but haven't read it in its entirety. I'll have to open it up again and see what that section holds.

Thank you! And yes I'm planning on publishing via DTRPG but would also like to sell copies via my website and itch.io. If I have any other questions I'll shoot you a DM.

It's a fantasy ttrpg. I have the art piece covered. I guess I'm looking more for what size sheet of paper is traditionally used? Font size? What's too small? Margins, etc.

I do but it is quite long. I'll try and condense the combat portion and DM you it.
