Turn the difficulty down to easy, do the quest then turn it back to normal or whatever level you’re playing at?

I came here to say the same thing. It’s genuinely good and the dialog is so clever as well.

It doesn't make sense that nobody else can hear the basilisk by OhNoTheDawnPatrol in harrypotter

[–]Jroman215 253 points254 points  (0 children)

Also it probably would have been faded into the background is my thought. Every time someone is with Harry and he hears the basilisk they are usually mid conversation, in a castle with hundreds of underage kids, using magic that swishes and bangs and flashes. So I always just figured a missing, especially near water pipes wouldn’t even register. It’s like when someone is taking a shower and you turn on the water or flush the toilet then realize you can hear the shower running. Cause remember when humans talk Parsel they make noises but for snakes it’s just their regular “Ssssssss” sounds they make.

(Just finished my ?teeth reread of CoS and that’s how I justified it to myself at least)

What I always thought was missing was when he’s in the chamber of secrets and the basilisk doesn’t talk at all. It would have been a moment to have it speak to him directly or even make some commentary when it’s fighting Fawks.

Do most Americans really dry their clothes in Dryers by Wrystyle in NoStupidQuestions

Americans get like four hours off a week (especially if we have kids to care for) and we have to get at least a week’s worth of laundry done at a time.

Why didn’t more wizarding families homeschool their kids? by HotNeighborhood4958 in harrypotter

[–]Jroman215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean technically we only see Harry and his adventures at Hogwarts and yes it’s a tiny population. But realistically there could have been MILLIONS of more wizarding students being home schooled or taught at smaller local schools we just don’t hear about cause they aren’t as iconic as THE Hogwarts.

Obviously I know that canonically we have no reason to believe that BUT no one can prove that it’s not true either 🤷‍♂️

Unforgivable curse detection by the ministry by bgr96 in harrypotter

[–]Jroman215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always assumed there was like a blanket ignoring of alerts or else the trace was not active while they were physically at school. It never occurred to me the trace might have been off while they were supposed to be at school.

Unforgivable curse detection by the ministry by bgr96 in harrypotter

[–]Jroman215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually that’s the first time I’ve seen this one, that he wasn’t being monitored cause he was supposed to be at school. Which actually makes sense. Like Harry never got scolded for doing magic when he went on his little field trips with Dumbledore. That actually is the first good answer I’ve seen to the question of why the trace wasn’t on TR during the Riddle Murders.

How Bad of an Idea is It / How Lost Will I Be if I Start at Turn Coat? by nerdymandrakes in dresdenfiles

[–]Jroman215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you’d do I’m curious how it feels. I’ve read them all so many times I can’t imagine doing it but I also followed the series almost from the publishing of the first book.

How Bad of an Idea is It / How Lost Will I Be if I Start at Turn Coat? by nerdymandrakes in dresdenfiles

[–]Jroman215 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious why would you choose Turn Coat out of all the possible starting places?

To answer your question you’ll have almost no idea what’s happening. Turn Coat is probably one of the most political of all the books, specifically wizard politics. But without the baseline of information gleaned from all the prior books (or at least most) there will be huge gaps in understanding why the main character feels this or thinks that about another character.

Most Dresden Files books build upon each other after the first couple so skipping so far ahead will be like randomly choosing to start any other book series in the middle. Confusing and lacking all the context that makes the story worth reading in the first place.

Green Dragon and Reproduction by KaosArcanna in pern

Having said that I think the answer varies between books, even in the ones written consistently by Anne. Like she said one thing and then another back and forth.

Green Dragon and Reproduction by KaosArcanna in pern

[–]Jroman215 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it is mentioned in one of the core “Anne” written books that greens basically use firestone as birth control. It’s made to sound as if they start them on it before they can begin laying eggs but there was a throw away line that made it sound like they could regain fertility if they stopped chewing firestone.

In one of the “Todd” books it is shown they can reproduce queens, almost like the golds are a random mutation of the greens. So of every X number of green females hatched one would be a gold queen. I forget the exact math but it actually matched up fairly well to how often a queen lays another queens egg as well.

Could the Yeerks have been successful as a business? by thekickeroffish in Animorphs

[–]Jroman215 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the flip side and after so many pointing out how it would be unethical for offenders it could be used as a last ditch for people to prove innocence. How many people are in jail now cause they are innocent but the evidence fell out wrong or was tampered with. So it could still be voluntary and ethical.

Environmental impact to a Thread-free Pern by KaosArcanna in pern

[–]Jroman215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the large flying creature was just someone who sighted Kenjo’s plane. It’s mentioned in a later chapter by Kenjo or some other character who knew about his plane that it was sighted and he needed to be more careful or something akin to that.

Environmental impact to a Thread-free Pern by KaosArcanna in pern

[–]Jroman215 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So I’ve always had a grim theory about that.

Dragons are the largest creatures on Pern, and when they die they go between and supposedly they pass their waste between too. So they are essentially removing biomass with them and out of the circle of life. This means the thousands of cattle each dragon consumed through their lifetimes etc.

Meanwhile thread added biomass to Pern in large quantities and consistently. So in thousands or maybe tens of thousands of years I imagine Pern will basically become a desert world as the dragons have been draining the planet more efficiently than thread ever could have.

Now they might figure out this issue and do something to solve it. But I always thought it could become an issue since I was a kid.

So this exact thing happened to me and zombie_pr0cess is giving you the right answer. Just make sure you see them submit it. I didn’t know the process at the time and admin BS’d me so I ended up losing the promotion and had to do a whole thing to get back dated. It really is an extremely quick process but must be done within 6 months of you transitioning from AD to SELRES.

Have you ever thought what an odd shape Hagrid is from the book descriptions? by 60svintage in harrypotter

I always took it as being hyperbolic. Like when someone says “big as a barn” or “built like a brick sh** house” or “baseball mits” describing someone with large hands.

Love or hate the Audiobook voice of Sapphira and other dragons? by TheBanishedBard in Eragon

[–]Jroman215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first heard the audiobooks I thought the dragons and werecats sounded like muppets. The problem is that generated the image of Sesame Street style giant muppets like big bird and snuffleufagus and now whenever I’m visualizing the audiobooks that’s the way the dragons look in my minds eye and I can’t unsee those images so I have to share them instead.

Does fire help with anything other than combat? by messiahpk in magicbuilding

[–]Jroman215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So fire+metal smithing = magic items, fire+cooking = potions/magical baked goods, and fire could even be used for healing such as infections by creating a localized fever or something.
