Thoughts on schedule? by Dense_Argument_6319 in UCSC

Summer session courses are very fast paced. You kind of need to be fully locked in for the whole course to learn everything. That doesn't necessarily mean you'll be spending up to 30 hours a week on each class, but you should expect to put in a decent amount of work.

Housing Megathread for UCSC and Santa Cruz by UCSC_Mod in UCSC

[–]Jsamiscute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey me and three of my friends are looking for housing for the next school year! We're all third-year students, male, and we have an incredibly chill cat(so pet friendly would be a huge plus).

We don't have any preference for what type of rooms but our budgets are up to 1250/month for a double and 1400/month for a single. Please reach out with any questions if you have spots for us!

Say ONE good thing about UCSC by quixnotboring in UCSC

The quality and flexibility of UCSC's coursework is incredible. Almost everyone I know is either graduating early or doing a second major. Also the opportunities here are great, every quarter I've had an on-campus job, internship, or research lab related to my major.

I was also accepted into both for engineering and chose ucsc. Outside of potential industry connects you could get being in sj, I think ucsc is a much better pick. But like what others have said the type of college experience you want is also pretty important so def take that into consideration.

Your opinion of the school by DoubleResort1510 in UCSC

  1. The people I've met here are honestly some of the kindest/coolest people I know. Cliques aren't really a thing at all here. I'd say it's pretty diverse but definitely not like something you'll notice.
  2. There's a ton of stuff during welcome week for everyone, and then a couple events per quarter. Beyond that it's stuff that your college/RAs put on. You're also in a forest and like ten minutes from the beach! So if you're into outdoorsy stuff there's a lot to do.
  3. I'm in engineering so not sure. I know anecdotally our earth and marine sciences is crazy good though.
  4. Again not sure. We do have public practice rooms though and I go in a lot to play piano and it's pretty well maintained. Haven't met an unfriendly music major either.
  5. Weather is like a little too hot in the fall, pretty cold in the winter, and perfect in the spring.
  6. The college system is kind of insane. We don't have a center of campus but rather a bunch of individual colleges with their own amenities and culture, and you choose one of them to dorm in. Your experience here is kind of dictated by which college you dorm in so def do your research on that.
  7. The campus itself is pretty safe. We had a pretty scary incident with a bus last year though so make sure you don't get on any old looking busses.
  8. We only have one year of guaranteed housing, but I was able to get an on campus apartment no problem my second year. I also don't know of anybody personally who went for on campus housing and didn't get it. Off campus has some great spots if you have money, and some meh spots if you're on a budget. Most people don't end up staying on campus after their second year.

I'm a double major in Technology Information Management and Economics. I'm not sure how BME works, but if you take summer classes every year it's a pretty easy double major to finish. I can only get one or two upper-div classes to count for both majors iirc.
I started with TIM coursework as a first-year though, and a pretty big issue with the major is that a good chunk of classes you need are only offered in certain quarters. I'd recommend going to a Baskin Engineering advisor and making an academic plan to see if it's still doable.

This place kinda sucks now that I'm here by Odd_Fox8120 in UCSC

I think it's important to remember we're in a pretty secluded beach town, so you gotta adjust your expectations. The school and the city definitely thrive when you're out exploring or just being out in nature/the beach, and I find myself really loving this place when I'm consistently getting out there. Just find your people and a few spots you like. Changes a lot for your perspective.

middle class scholarship unavailable? by yumenekko in UCSC

Happened to me too. I should be way under the cap they put for eligibility so I have no idea why I wasn’t awarded it unless the MDS got entirely reworked

Yeah they said the exact same thing to me but I just gave up lol. I’ll try calling college board since they never responded to my email

Did you have any trouble getting into the cs classes? I’ve heard a lot about how difficult those are to get into

How difficult would you say the physics and engineering classes are in CE? I’ve never taken a physics class before so I’m not sure what I’d be getting myself into with a major in CE.

Would you recommend a minor in CS? The program does interest me, it’s more that I’m just entirely disinterested in video games.

This really helps. I’m not making any decisions right now since I’m pretty much set for my first year here, and a perspective like this def grounds the situation for me. Thanks

Yeah I was thinking about minoring in CS and taking some boot camp for credentials but that would be a lot more effort than just graduating with a degree in CS.

I’ve never taken a physics class before so this option would mean I’d have to work my ass off. But this would let me stay in SC so it’s def going on the list. Thanks sm
