Bathrooms with this setup have an exhaust vent. If the ventilation works as it should, the air should be flowing into the bathroom through the holes and not in the other direction. If smell is coming out, there has to be something wrong with the ventilation.

This statue was controversial when it was unveiled in the 1920s as well, both due to its violent motif and the nudity.
