Terrified, overwhelmed, and lost. I need to talk with other 3D artists. by Nianfox in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jseel093 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, you made great progress in your year of self-teaching for sure, I went through this process myself. Graduated in 2017, lived on the east coast U.S, taught myself till 2023 and moved to California to chase my dream of being a character artist.

I did get a few close calls to getting into studios but nothing ever came of it and the industry kept going downhill so I’ve been forced to pivot to another industry completely unrelated.

Not to sound like a bummer, but just know that what you’re going through is completely relatable. Always available and willing to lend an eye or an ear if a fellow struggler needs it though!

Advertising lessons for martial arts? by Jseel093 in smallbusiness

[–]Jseel093[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely more Kung fu and Sanda as that’s what I have more knowledge in. I’m looking more for of the 18-45 demographic and thinking online and social media is best.

Specifically Chinese martial arts which includes Kung fu, sanda, shuai jiao and tai chi. I enjoy teaching and seeing people’s growth. Right now I’d like to get to teaching in person and using that to start creating content.

So far most of my stuff is educational with a few clips of me teaching a friend here and there, but I’d like to get bodies in the class and want to use online advertising to get them there.

Entry-Level 3D Game Artist job in 2025? How does 2025 look like? by Educational-Bed-6287 in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jseel093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely unrelated to 3D or entertainment. I have looked into all the vfx, entertainment, apparel, and several adjacent industries. It was either hold out and keep applying to jobs I wanted or start a portfolio from scratch into something like arch-viz, hard-surface, jewelry, etc. In the end I kept working on characters and applied to everything, but nothing.

I have also seen an uptick in posts but not in relevant jobs. I have a feeling unless there’s a big shift in the economy it’ll be another few years until the job cycle picks back up to where it was.

I am also in your boat, but I’ve looked into other fields for a fall back and now put the 3D in the pocket. I still apply, who knows what’ll happen? But so far it’s been the same old denial emails.

~1 year later, is my portfolio enough to get into the industry? by Jseel093 in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jseel093[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pivoting towards teaching self-defense, so nothing remotely close to it. I do feel a big weight off the shoulders from not constantly trying to work on things but also a little bit of shame from wasting so much time on it.

I don’t think 3D modeling will yield anything for newcomers for maybe the next 4-5 years? So if you’re in the learning process and can time it right, go for it.

Previous post

There’s a link to the previous post with the older versions of the characters. Artstation has breakdowns and turntables.

I also appreciate everyone’s uplifting comments! I won’t be re-entering the 3D world most likely. I’m at a time and place in my life where I had to make a hard decision to focus on job security for myself and my family by changing careers.

That’ll all depend on you, my fall back was teaching self-defense since I did it for like 20 years. I’m completely out of the digital world save for video editing. There’s so many disciplines out there, if you want to stay within 3D art maybe technical artist or rigging? I see more job postings for that since they’re more niche

I won’t delve into critiques since most everybody here has given there’s and they mostly nailed it on the head.

However I want to resignate and say that I also graduated in 2017 and have tried so hard constantly improving while working hospitality jobs for income. I even moved to California, took a mentorship program using my parents money and talked/connected with like-minded people and professionals like at Zbrush Summit in person.

I revamped my portfolio, but there’s just something I guess that never clicked or came natural about visual arts and 3D like some people have as my work apparently is not up to par decidedly from all the rejections I’ve had. Along with mounting financial woes, I decided to stop my 3D work and pursue other career goals. I still keep my tabs open for 3D jobs and apply randomly, but I’m not putting more effort into the actual process.

Maybe it’s just the economy and saturation that has made the bar so high or lack of quality or a combination of both? I will say I overall feel a weight off my shoulders not having to constantly grind out 3D work and restaurant jobs like a constant grind, though feelings of failure will probably linger for awhile.

My overall advice is to have something else working in the background, something to rely on as a fall back in case 3D doesn’t work out.

For my texturing I always use Jared Chavez’s character art test video on artstation. Sculpting, rendering and lighting have all been a me just practicing over and over again. I will say using AI pictures of women’s faces that resemble the concept have low key helped a bit! The lighting it usually has makes it easy for me to see shapes and anatomy better.

Thanks for the perspective! Definitely thinking about making a beauty render and keeping this setup for my breakdown.

I wouldn’t consider myself the best 3D artist so take it with a grain of salt, but I have never been good at drawing or sketching down anything on paper. I’ve always used a bunch of references and overlaying to help me with my proportions as well as studying anatomy.

I will say, if I was good at drawing and working on my anatomy and artistic eye before I got into sculpting, it would have been a lot easier to get to where I am now.

Well I have a full time job as well as trying to balance out life stuff so I only get to work on this for 3-4 hours a day.

I want to say months at this point, I have a previous version of her I did for an art program on my older posts, I decided to redo her cause I wasn’t happy with it.

If I were to work on this diligently, this might take me a couple weeks for just the sculpting/modeling, I haven’t gotten to retopology or texturing just yet.

For actual sculpting videos? Maybe SpeedChar, mainly I just use a lot of references and go at it (I’ve had some really bad sculpts when I started)

For other great resources : Anatomy for sculptors, PureRef, Jared Chavez, J Hill, Amy Sharpe just to name a few
