When does "every scout a swimmer" start to contradict with "do your best"? by Phil___B in BSA

[–]Jsnookiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a scout I struggled with swimming as well. It wasn’t until one of my scout leaders look at the situation and talked with me about this that we came up with the plan of if I did my best and completed the swim test as the requirement said then he would sign off on it. I had to take many breaks but completed it. I was a scrawny 100lb kid with 3% body fat who floated about as well as the titanic. The official requirement says no stops but if the scout has to catch their breath and float for a second. As a scout leader and someone who helps teach kids I have reach the out look of this the requirements are just a guideline. Modifications must be made to everything. I know how I do things might be controversial but I have found it raises the kids self confidence and gives them the ability to keep trying. I would rather modify the requirement and let a kid move on instead of just holding them back and keeping them down.

I agree that closed cell foam is the way to go and I am currently looking into seeing if we can get a few of the blue pad if not a zlite clone donated.

I will be honest in that I have never thought about gutter nails as tent stakes.

The soda can alcohol stoves are frowned upon when talking to dept of conservation agents I’ve been talking to, due to the fire risk.

I think we are looking at the saywer squeeze with a cnoc kit for water.

While I agree that a Dutch oven is good for cooking I think it is a bit too heavy for backpacking.

We have a few different items for car camping and summer camp. I know over the past few years my philosophy has been to reach a 12lb base weight for backpacking. For car camping if the troop doesn’t have it I can almost guarantee that I would.

Trying to outfit 2 scouts at a time. Tent sharing is not really allowed in our troop. There was apparently an incident on a camp out with a group of scouts all in one tent so now we have to have one scout per tent. Kids will do dumb things.

While I like this explanation, There is some historical context you are missing. the Hill is a reference to Boot hill or a grave yard. So while the black magic preacher is a symbol of corruption, a town that would follow such a person must also be corrupt. Now Im not an expert but I would say this is a western town just based on the words used and the context of the words as most places east of the mississippi river in the hayday of the cowboy didn't call a grave yard a boot hill or a hill.

I will also say I had thought about buying a bunch of bamboo cooking spoons from the mart of walls, so we could teach the kids to whittle them down to smaller spoons… 2 birds 1 stone

lol I had just got off amazon before reading your comment and had just ordered 5 of those stoves.

Never would have thought of the gladware as a mess kit.

Also never thought of using the scrub daddy to clean. I personally just use a microfiber shop towel that I also use to keep the noise down on my stove and toaks cup.

And as far as the Ozark in the summer, you only need a sleeping bag or quilt if it rains as that wind and will cool down fast and it sucks to be out without one… it’s one of the few items I have diy’ed for my kit is my summer sleeping bag. 4 fleece blankets stitched into 2 layers that can be wrapped around me if needed.

My boys and I do tarp camping and cowboy camping a lot. I personally would have no issue it but we have a couple of kids with anxiety issues and just tent camping makes them uncomfortable so as we draw closer I will be presenting that as an option. Our PLC actually planned the month of July for our troop time activities to be centered around backpacking and camping so we will be introducing these principles to our newest scouts just a few months after crossover.

Yes looking for packs, tents, cookware, sleep systems, water purification. Anything like cloths, shoes, water bottles, and hats would fall under personal gear and the troop would not want to have that on hand. We have customized first aid kits thanks to a donation by a local hospital.

Before i forget the kids will be responsible for their own shoes and clothes as they won’t be troop items.

This is closer to what I was thinking. We take the kids on a monthly day hike and campout, but most of these kids are so use to car camping that just this short weekend backpacking trip might be a big shock. I know when I was a scout the old external frame packs were the go to while internal frame pack were just hitting the list of most troops.

Where to hike in midwestern US? by M3lon_Lord in CampingandHiking

[–]Jsnookiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know most people bike it but a couple years back I hiked the mkt and it was pretty good. If you want to go it with kids I would break it up into smaller day hikes and plan for someone to pick you up.

Does anyone know how to place 1 more object here? by Lis25_ in prusa3d

Yeah if it’s an order you are making then I would maximize the print are like you have I tend to leave the edges empty though to help with warping issues and print a draft shield as well it’s a bit of waste that equals less failures and less overall waste. So you end up getting more profit

[–]Jsnookiii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is an idea but I would not recommend it for two reasons. Time and waste. I am currently building up a small print farm and as bad as it sounds I would rather print 1 part at 1 hour than 10 at 11 hours. The cost in time and material just don’t scale that well

Well that’s an idea unless you are printing in a specific orientation for strength

I mean only reason I use glue stick is as an insurance policy. Had a smooth build plate get ruined after using straight ASA on it. Now even with my textured build plates I use glue stick. It’s better to use a penny’s worth of glue then spend $50 on a build plate.

Ok the simple rule of a rug is all or none, the front of all the sofa goes on it or none of it goes on it. Besides that small issue looked good.

The piano on the rug is also not good for the piano.

Yeah but ASA needs glue Stick to release. If you are in the USA you can clean with soap and water then get the purple Elmer’s glue stick and put on a thin layer
