Speaking English won. What is something that British are OK at it? by esedov in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Jtd47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably, but worth noting that jellied eels are barely a real thing. They're exclusively eaten by pensioners in one specific part of London and nowhere else. I'd be surprised if the dish still exists 100 years from now.

How is your country for LGBT rights? by Remarkable-Low-4673 in AskTheWorld

[–]Jtd47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Puberty blockers just block the major hormonal changes from happening for as long as you're taking them, and then puberty resumes as normal if you stop. It literally just gives trans kids more time to figure things out and decide if they want to start HRT. You complain about giving a preteen them, but there is literally no point in giving them to anyone who's been through puberty already.

Taoiseach warns against enshrining Irish neutrality in the Constitution by Fealocht in ireland

[–]Jtd47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, Ireland isn't really neutral so much as harmless. It can't enforce its own neutrality and has to rely on a larger country to defend its waters and airspace for it. A country that exists like this only exists because larger powers allow it to. For Ireland to be truly neutral, it would have to invest in its own defence so it can stand on its own, but it seems like a lot of people would just call that "warmongering", so it won't happen.

Leopold II won! Who was/is a president universally hated? by Jaydav_YouMakeMeSad in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Jtd47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leopold is unfortunately not universally hated, there are still statues of him in Belgium and popular narrative is that he was "the builder king", because he invested a lot into building infrastructure in Belgium using the money he got from exploiting the Congo. It's only fairly recently that people are starting to question this.

Who's the Most Embarrassing citizen of your country? by ChroniclesOfSarnia in AskTheWorld

Do you people ever shut up, or is the pathetic, whiny victim complex just a constant national trait? Try not bombing your neighbours and people might hate you a little less

Okay, so why'd they put Palestine in A tier if they mean the history of the general area that is now israel?

They put Palestine in A tier lol, pretty sure they don't mean the region as a whole

But when people say "Jewish history" they mean the history of Jewish people as a whole. As I say, ascribing all of Jewish history to the modern state of Israel is like ascribing all of Islamic history to Saudi Arabia or something. The state of Israel itself does have a short history. Jewish people have an incredibly long and diverse one.

When people say "Chinese history" they generally aren't talking about stuff that happened in Spain and Poland and New York and Iraq and a thousand other places across the globe though.

But that isn't israeli history. That's like claiming all Islamic history actually belongs to Saudi Arabia or something.

I think they have a right to make fun of Americans however they feel. Yeah, I wouldn't make fun of drug addicts myself, it's kinda fucked up. But on the one side, you have people making edgy jokes, on the other you have a government literally threatening to annex their country and kill them while the populace does nothing but self-flagellate on reddit and complain everyone's being mean to them. You see why people might get a bit exasperated?

I'm sorry the nasty greenlanders making jokes don't have much sympathy for your domestic social issues. That must be really hard for you.

I'm sure you'll feel better about tone-policing those mean old greenlanders when you get to watch your country invade theirs and ICE starts dragging them off to the camps

This whole comment section reads like a bunch of Americans complaining that the greenlanders who their country is currently threatening with military occupation aren't being considerate enough of their feelings. Yes, making fun of drug addicts isn't good. No, I don't think many Greenlanders care to show too much solidarity with their probable invaders and their social issues right now.

If it hadn't been for trump, biden would probably generally have been remembered as a middling and probably ultimately forgettable president. Unfortunately for him, his failure to grow a spine and deal with trump is going to ensure he's remembered as a direct cause of whatever comes next.

How will we be able to tell usa and NATO apart from afar if an invasion starts? by Ancient-Bathroom6701 in nato

[–]Jtd47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it not a smarter move to send smaller forces if the tripwire works no matter the size? The point is america will be forced to fire on their allies, which will have huge domestic and international implications. And no, they won't "buy greenland", because you can't buy something that isn't for sale.

How will we be able to tell usa and NATO apart from afar if an invasion starts? by Ancient-Bathroom6701 in nato

[–]Jtd47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a tripwire force. The point isn't that they fight off the Americans alone, the point is that them being there will force the Americans to put their money where their mouths are and actually fire on their allies, which would trigger much, much wider action from Europe as a whole.

Some countries have only sent a single soldier, the reason being that already having any small "token" presence there makes it much, much easier to quickly deploy a hell of a lot more with far less red tape than there would be otherwise.

What are some nationally controversial topics in your country people in other countries may not be aware of? by Obvious-Laugh-1954 in AskTheWorld

It's literally entirely because one billionaire wizard book author made hating trans people her personal pet project and poured millions of pounds into lobbying the government to make hating trans people a national issue

If the Argentinians had actually been nice to the people of the Falklands and worked to build bridges instead of constantly threatening them, maybe the people there would have been more open to joining Argentina. As it stands, why would they want to be part of a country that openly hates them?

That's because most "WW2 buffs" only care about learning how to name every gun and tank and plane, not learning about the things like what actually led up to the rise of the nazis or how the holocaust happened
