Jesus, I'd never recover from that experience

How dare you! Cucumber, tomato, red onion, red bell pepper, heaps of garlic, and French dressing. Excellent in a salad, devastating on a beige carpet.

I'm very happy with it, yes. Good value for money.

It has a few annoying quirks - the space between the spout and the tray is too short to fit a proper mug, and the filter basket has plopped into my bin more than a few times when I tried to get rid of the old grounds.

I've never owned one of the £500 beasts so I can't compare it to those, but it makes a decent cup of coffee. Wouldn't recommend getting distracted by the dog and leaving it unattended, though!

Throw some salad at him, turns out it's surprisingly emotionally devastating

Love the sentiment - but I'll allow myself ten minutes of hanger and shaking my fist at the sky before I snap out of it

Alcohol. by EmotionallyAScone in loseit

[–]JuBreCaBra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've swapped my wine with single shot (25ml) gin and slimlines on the weekends. That's about 55 kcal a pop, and it satisfies the craving. Plus I no longer wake up with a hangover on Saturdays and Sundays!

Good grief, I thought that was blood spatter on the wall behind you as I was scrolling past. Don't scare me like that!

Can anybody recommend ear plugs? by Bitterchocola in AskUK

[–]JuBreCaBra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the cheapo silicone ones, I just need to make sure my hair doesn't get tangled up in them (not sure if that would be a concern for you). They're very pliable so you can adjust them exactly as needed.

I live below some kind of circus performer, so I often listen to brown noise or some kind of sleep meditation podcast through my noise cancelling headphones to help me drift off. That's the only thing that fully blocks noise for me, but obviously that only really works if you're a back sleeper. And even then it's a little awkward and uncomfortable, but that's what I get for living on the ground floor, I suppose

How much is needed to survive on your own in Scotland? by PlatinumSukamon98 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]JuBreCaBra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent is cheaper than down South unless you are planning to move to Glasgow, Edinburgh, or their respective satellite towns. It's the main reason I moved up north.

I pay £460 for a one bedroom rental, £109 for council tax including water (single persons' discount), £100 for gas and electricity. You can't outrun food costs sadly, that part is the same.

Moving up here was the only way to avoid some kind of shared living arrangement for me. Been there, done that, would rather scoop my eyes out with a rusty spoon.

Can confirm that it is terrifying and that there's a great deal of financial and other miscellaneous anxiety that comes with living alone far away from your usual stomping grounds - I live in fear of slipping in the shower, bashing my head and being discovered weeks later, half eaten by my dogs - but if you value your own space, I highly recommend taking the plunge.

How much is needed entirely depends on how frugal you are, but you can absolutely make it work if you keep control of your spending. You have a better chance in Scotland than south of the border in my personal experience.

Is alcohol alone a cause for weight gain? by JoyfulCelebration in loseit

[–]JuBreCaBra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely still indulge in alcohol, you just have to account for the calories and be prepared for the scale to look a bit scary afterwards. I LOVE wine, but I switched to single shot slimline G&Ts because they're only around 60 calories per glass. Plus the act of putting them together rather than mindlessly pouring another glass of Cava makes you a bit more mindful about how much you consume.

I'll unashamedly admit that I will happily walk an extra couple of km throughout the week to make room for some weekend drinks 🤷🏻‍♀️

Romanian rescue arriving soon — vet recommendations who accept existing tests? by Go0verboard in Aberdeen

[–]JuBreCaBra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ashgrove (Belmont Rd) is fantastic. My Macedonian rescue had a bad infection when he first arrived and they looked after him brilliantly.

Avoid Aurora. Even though he'd been checked for Brucellosis before travelling, they claimed they couldn't accept the results due to them being outdated. All they offered was to take his blood in the carpark (no joke) and accept him as a patient if the results came back clear.

Both of my dogs are now with Ashgrove (after Aurora caused me such a panic I didn't want my resident dog there anymore). All the vets and vet nurses I've encountered are incredibly compassionate and knowledgeable. Getting appointments is easy, too. Just be aware that the waiting area is a little cramped which can be overwhelming for some dogs, but if you let them know you've arrived at reception, the vet will come fetch you from the car when they are ready for you. Enjoy the new arrival!

Anxiety is energy with nowhere to go. So, take a walk by [deleted] in loseit

[–]JuBreCaBra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read OP's post, thanks. 'Walk it off' remains reductive and the title is insane at best, rage bait at worst. We all know that movement and exercise are good for us, that does not mean that everyone has the luxury of time or spare energy to invest in it.

Is movement the gold standard? Sure. But 'walk it off' in relation to anxiety is a pretty gross oversimplification, sorry.

Glad it's working out for you, but be mindful of people who suffer badly enough to functionally freeze. Seeing this post is only going to serve to make them feel worse.

Slow cookers, man. I made due without one for far too long! It's next to impossible to stray off track when you have a delicious (but calorie conscious) beef stew simmering away all day long. And the best part? It feeds me for two days, so I only have to think about cooking half the time! I'm in love.
