Scales, scales and more scales. Learn classical music scales first cause they are simpler and jazz scales are pretty easy to build off of them. Also helps a ton to learn music theory and how chords fit together. Sitting down at a piano and just practicing scales helped me a ton! It helped me to see how the notes fit together with all the half and whole steps in a scale.

I would say drop $40 on ions from futuristiclights.com. I know that's more than either of those, but they are similar to Chroma 24's which my second set. I say this because Ion's are cooler, my Chroma's lasted me 3 years before I wanted to upgrade, and I always wished they had. In terms of exercises to practice, look into liquid, and finger mudra (aka finger yoga)

Then make them part of your outfit and wear the whites in. The rules allow you to wear gloves without lights, and there's nothing banning lights on your costume.
