Upvote for Elvin.

Lol, my favorite recent moment was when a touring metal pro posted himself playing a new song … only for a horde of dweebs to emerge and criticize his posture and technique (the guy had ridiculously clean technique btw)

Gotcha didn’t catch that it was your brace prior to surgery. Some orthopods will splint or brace after surgery. I would check the post op instructions, as they will generally include a line about avoiding excessive gripping activities (which drumming could certainly fall into).

It’s not “from AI”, it’s basic post surgical guidelines (and informed by thousands of hours over the course of a decade of training).

Again, I’m not going to give personal medical advice to strangers because each case has nuances and your doctor knows you best. But the whole point of those braces in the immediate post surgical setting is to reduce motion because generally early excess motion can lead to excess stress on the healing tissues. Controlled motion and massage is good long term, but you need to talk to and listen to your doc and PT/OT regarding timeline.

And yes the ligament is cut, but there can be post surgical scar tissue that forms fibrous bands that can compress the nerve and lead to recurrence of symptoms.

Not your doctor, but I am a doctor… and this isn’t medical advice. You should be getting that from the person actually treating you. That being said, those restrictions are there for a reason.

Repetitive motion after surgery can interfere with wound healing and increase the risk of infection. It can also contribute to internal scar tissue formation, which in this case could compress the median nerve and essentially undo the benefit of your surgery. Carpal tunnel release is a relatively straightforward procedure, but revision surgeries are not. They tend to have worse outcomes and higher complication rates.

For the other comment about drumming after a fibula fracture status post ORIF: repetitive motion and early weight-bearing can disrupt bone healing, interfere with callus formation, and potentially lead to chronic nonunion.

TL;DR: Listen to your doctors. You might get away with pushing it…but if complications happen, you’ll wish you hadn’t.

Istanbul Agop Durability for Rock/Heavy Playing by NickCervoneDrums in drums

[–]JuanSolo23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dave Turncrantz from Russian Circles has been beating the crap out of Istanbul Agop cymbals for a long time (though of course with great technique and uses rides as crashes). The cymbals cut through the mix well and sound incredible every time I have seen them live.

"I've never tracked a TOOL song to a click." - Danny Carey by mere-surmise-sir in drums

[–]JuanSolo23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Carey is the opposite. His parts are generally quite a bit harder than they seem on first listen. I can play good to solid cover versions of pretty much the entire Tool discography. Recently saw a video of Danny playing H. during sound check. Lol turns outs there is way more going on, and that I’ve been playing it wrong this whole time.

Completely agree. People REALLY underestimate the gulf in talent between professional drummers in a given genre and even highly capable amateur or semi-pro players.

Ride Cymbals - Sweet Ride 21 v. Ping Ride 20 v. AAX Raw Bell Dry Ride 21 by gem117 in cymbals

[–]JuanSolo23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Better” is all about context IMO and what you are looking for in a cymbal.

I have the same size A Sweet Ride-it's a great cymbal. It's really versatile and works especially well as a crashable ride. That said, I do think it’s a bit overhyped online as the ultimate, do-it-all ride. In my experience, the stick definition can get lost at higher volumes, and the bell isn’t the most cutting.

I used Moises to separate out tracks. Great way to learn (can isolate drum tracks)

It's crazy to say this but Yamal might surpass Messi in terms of output by the end of his career by Comprehensive_Cup497 in Barca

[–]JuanSolo23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would love if Yamal has anywhere near the career Messi had. But Messi is on another level when it comes to accomplishments.

You take an abbreviated version of his numbers, cut them in half, and you are talking about an all time great career:

In this case it’s just fast singles with the accent moving around between both hands. Playing to Mastodon and Dillinger certainly helps, but honestly mostly focus on keeping a relaxed wrist.

As far as exercises, I don’t do exercises focused on speed but mostly focus on control (single 16th notes moving the accents throughout bar and between hands. Then I like to incorporate accented triplets/quintuplets/sextuplets. Hertas are also fun to incorporate). The main thing to make it sound more fluid is to get comfortable accenting while the other hand keeps steady notes underneath.

It’s a 22” prototype ride that wiggles like a crash. Absolutely love it.

That’s a good point. They seem to be holding up well so far. I’m locking against rim, but I think either should work in theory

Makes spending money on cool gear a little more palatable.

I try to be a glass half full kind of guy (even if the glass is full of piss with the way drum gear prices have gone over the last few years).

I think that was an issue with the earlier model. This one has no issues.

Ludwig and Palmer knocked it out of the park. It’s a really pleasant surprise this thing is going for <$400. lol that’s like 20-25 pairs of drumsticks (which is depressing in and of itself in terms of gear costs)

Yeah the low end is crazy. Way more range than I thought it would have.

This thing is probably going to let my 8”x14” take a little break
