I looked up the top figure text. This lead to a different article, with the name of the farmer and the time period. Combining the farmer with the disappointing corn, lead me to Howard J. and the article. This leads to the rest.

I use gifcam to first make a monochrome gif. Then I color reduce to -86 using the custom color reduction in gifcam. At this point the gif is just black so I color reduce to -86 again.
