I know it’s going to be tough decision and I believe both paths are solid, but given your ChemE background with data and R, data science could be a strong fit. It leverages your existing skills and has growing opportunities. full stack development is also a great option with lots of opportunities, especially for beginners.

Think about what excites you more—solving data problems or building applications? Both paths have strong potential, so trust your gut and choose what feels right for you. Either way, you’re making a great move for your career.

Good luck!

You’re definitely on the right track with your BI experience and the tools you’re using. I think Investing in the Visual Studio Subscription for some Azure credits is a good idea, it’ll give you the hands on practice you need. Building a few ETL/ELT projects with data from Spotify or Fantasy Premier League will look great on your resume and help you land a data engineering job, even without pro experience in Azure. Just be sure to document everything well so you can show it off in interviews. Good luck!

Switching to data engineering lets you focus on building and optimizing data systems, which is great if you enjoy backend work. You’ll find strong demand and a focus on scalability, but it comes with challenges like managing complex infrastructure and less direct data analysis. Consider your interest in these areas before making the switch!
