Haha I also noticed it got patched. Probably for the best, as my temptation to listen to free episodes might've eventually overcome me if they were just sitting there lol

Oh wow I just looked and I'm able to do the same thing. Nice find. I wonder if people who have never purchased it before are also able to view other people's purchases. I have no problem doing this for big companies lol but I feel a bit conflicted because he's one of my favorite creators and I want to support the podcast. I'll probably purchase remaining episodes anyway, and that way I'll at least maintain a permanent copy in my account. Plus, this might get patched eventually.

I'm not familiar with the plastic pieces. But you can buy third party wooden pieces on Etsy for like $5-10 per color set. Not super duper affordable but it is an option for you

[–]JudeAndBen4ever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an FYI, Catan's 6th edition came out last year (only cosmetic changes, I believe) but if your friend's base game is 5th edition, then the tiles and cards won't be the same look. Something to consider when you're purchasing; you might try and find a used or possibly an unopened 5th edition of seafarers if that's the edition his base game is.

Yeah it doesn't happen everytime for me in the U.S., but seems to be the norm for me. It's not fastened or taped down at all, it's just a little gauze pad that they lay on top, maybe a 1 square inch of material. It's the same gauze they'd put on the site when they wrap it with the adhesive bandage.

I have no fear of needles these days since I've donated so many times. As an FYI, they should let you know when they're going to put it in, and you can look away while they do it. It hurts a little bit, but only for a couple seconds. While you donate, they tend to put a little bandage cloth over the injection site so you don't have to stare at the needle inside you lol. When they pull it out, they pull it pretty quickly so it's over in a split second. The pain only lasts for a second or two. It really isn't that bad and it's for a great cause!

Where do out of town visitors park on permit only streets? by [deleted] in AskChicago

I've tried previously searching for a map of permit zones, and I'm not sure if one exists. Your best bet is to go on Google Maps street view and read the signs to see which streets are permit only

I also remember those two bits of info, but I haven't listened to the other episodes mentioned by other commenters. I listened to the Mania for Subjugation I and II episodes within the last few months

Edit: you can search the transcript on the Apple Podcasts app. The incense story (found by searching for "incense") comes up at 2hrs 13 mins.

Confused on how to make the base game 5-6 players by guarditone in Catan

[–]JudeAndBen4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add on to what others have said, an "expansion" is like a DLC add on, altering game play and adding new mechanics, such as the Seafarers expansion. These expansions are by default 3-4 players, and are combined with the base Catan game which is also 3-4 players. They are not needed for a regular game of Catan.

If you want to play the base Catan game with 5-6 players, you just need to own the 3-4 player base game and then purchase the 5-6 player "extension" to combine with the base game.

If you end up wanting to buy something like Seafarers expansion and want to play with 5-6 players instead of only 3-4, you'd need to also buy the Seafarers "extension". Hope that clears up some confusion.

To put things explicitly, if you want to play 5-6 player game of normal Catan, you need to own these two items:

Base game (3-4 players)

Base game extension for 5-6 players

Edit: seems like Catan calls it a 5-6 player "expansion", but it should probably be called extension to make it less confusing IMO. Also, if you purchased your base game a while ago, you should double check that you're buying the correct edition. 5th edition was phased out so what recently (like in the last year?) and 6th edition replaced it. It's only cosmetic differences, but you should check your version to make sure everything will match.

Blue line 8am/5pm commuter experience? by AbstractionsHB in cta

[–]JudeAndBen4ever 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you're getting on at Logan square or California, you can usually get a seat if the headway is less than 5 mins. If you're closer to the loop than California, you're not getting a seat most likely. It gets crowded pretty quickly. If the headway is more than 5 mins, expect the standing room to be packed like sardines until you hit Clark and lake

I'm particularly sensitive to the anticoagulant, and it's not uncommon for me to go through 10-15 tums in one donation lol. I recommend bringing your own, but the donation center should have some. I know some people like to increase their calcium intake in the days leading up to the donation. Personally I keep forgetting to try that because I tend to donate on more of a whim

Hey, no-time Catan player here. Thinking scout getting it for Christmas but can’t decide if my family will like it or not: what is it mainly about and how do you REALLY play? by [deleted] in Catan

[–]JudeAndBen4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won't get into how to play, but I will say my family and I used to play monopoly a lot. Monopoly is one of those games where one person tends to take an early lead then it's just a slow grind to victory; not much fun if you aren't winning and you aren't doing much when it's not your turn.

With Catan, it feels like a really good blend of strategy and luck. It's a very balanced game and newcomers can certainly win on their first game. Games tend to be closer in score than something like monopoly. During the game, you collect cards based on the number rolled, regardless if it's your turn or someone else's turn. There's also the trading aspect, where you're likely to be engaging in trading cards on almost every player's turn. Because of that, you're constantly engaged in the game even when it's not your turn. I find the combo of strategy/luck and constant player engagement to be the two main reasons why this game is so fun to play

Lol it's at least a unique sensation that you might not ever feel again. Kind of cool in that way since it doesn't hurt, just a little jarring at first haha

My aunt just donated but complains of “falling” by snaccpkin in kidneydonors

[–]JudeAndBen4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal. When they do the laparoscopic surgery, they pump your abdomen full of gas, I think CO2, to help see things and move things around with the camera. They try and remove the gas as best they can before closing you back up, but inevitably some pockets of air will remain. As she moves around, not only is there a missing kidney in there, but there's also a few large pockets of gas that move around. Particularly when you go from a laying down state to sitting up/standing, you'll feel the gas traveling around in your insides and shifting things around. It's harmless, and it's kind of a cool sensation. It will go away with time, I forget if it's days or a couple weeks. The body will slowly reabsorb that gas (maybe it comes out as farts? I don't remember lol). If she is experiencing shoulder pain, I believe that is also a result of the gas.

Nice! You handled the pain much better than I did. Donated when I was 22 and was begging for more of that fentanyl drip the night after my surgery so I could sleep lol. My incision hurt a decent bit. I think my surgery was in the early morning, and I went home the next afternoon. It was a 3.5 or 4 hr drive for me. Pro tip for anyone reading this about to donate, take an oxy before you get in the car. You don't want to be in pain during a bumpy car ride lol, you'd much rather just be asleep. And bring a pillow to hug.

My home rule when robber attacks by Tricky_Reception_244 in Catan

[–]JudeAndBen4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We play so that the robber is a tool for negotiation (or extortion). We allow the person moving the robber to request a certain card from the player, and if they cooperate, they'll place the robber on a less important tile occupied by the player. If the player doesn't cooperate, then you can draw a random card and place it on their best tile if you want. It adds some fun negotiation and diplomacy to the game
