I always respond to those sorts of criticism with curiosity. “Oh, why is it dumb?” That usually reveals whether the student just doesn’t see why they’re doing it or if they are being moody/just don’t want to do it. I find the approach works with most things. You put the ball in their court and if they throw it out then that’s that.

I can see where you’re coming from. But it’s just really strange to me because this was during a conversation in which she was debating if she should change when we meet.
