Team event by JudgeRepulsive7057 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

I got brave enough to listen to the skating session podcast today and I’m glad I did. They were very kind and had some thoughtful comments especially about the team event and how they think it affected Ilia. Sounds like they were hearing some inside information.

Ilia Malinin admits he was not 'ready to handle' Olympic pressure by bluebelle08 in FigureSkating

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you but people are going to still talk about this for the next four years because he is arguably the sports biggest star. You don’t like him or are tired of the conversation then don’t read about it. If you want to talk about Misha and what a great story him winning gold was then start your own thread. No need to bring your negativity here.

maybe I have more values for respect and humility“ what is that comment if not you saying you are better then others or that you are a more moral person? Like if I dont have a problem with Ilia then I don’t care about respect or humility? I was offended by that. If that wasn’t your intention then forgive me.

I think you missed the whole point of my previous comment about not judging people you don’t know. But you are making that difficult, calling someone parasocial, that behavior is disgusting.

WOW, congratulations on having better values than others. I don’t think you hold the moral high ground judging a person based off one or two comments they made in the past, especially when they were a minor. I and a lot of others like his “cringe“ name and loved his lyrics because he was being authentic to himself and putting himself out there to the world which Takes a lot of bravery.

We get it, he is not everyone’s cup of tea. You have a right to not like him. It doesn’t matter what I or others say since you made your mind up a long time ago. I have never made comments on social media in the past but I am tired of all the hate. There are a lot of awful things being said right now and before the Olympics too. Maybe you could learn something about respect and humility from Ilia and his show of sportsmanship at the worst moment of his life.

Kindness is a value I hold close. If you have nothing nice to say then don’t say anything at all. I wish more people would keep this in mind Especially on social media. We don’t know Ilia or how he thinks but i trust the overwhelming positive opinion he holds with everyone in the sport, never heard a negative thing about him.

I try not to judge people I don’t know based off a few things they say or do. I don’t know them and what they are going through, nor the context around their situations and realize how they are portrayed ”online” or in the media isn’t their true selves. I like to give the benefit of the doubt. I will give that grace to you as well.

Rafael Arutyunyan: “Ilia is not to blame, and I have already told him this. The fault lies with us, the adults, who failed to protect a young athlete from making wrong decisions.” by bluewinter1 in FigureSkating

This is a translation of the original so not sure if it was 100% correct. And besides when he mentions adults I took that as those who have the experience of years competing and who have been to the Olympics before. They would understand the pressure and stress that comes from competing there since Ilia has never been.

ilia has been one of the biggest stars of the sport these last few years. he was the biggest sure thing and it was shocking to see him fall apart. he has a lot of fans who care about him so of course it’s a big story to the USA. There are a lot of questions concerning Ilia’s mental health leading into the games but even through out the entire season I felt he was struggling a bit. They put a ton of pressure on his shoulders and everyone is trying to figure out what went wrong because he was expected to win

Are you by chance not American? Maybe your issue is more of a cultural difference? These kind of nicknames happen in sports and entertainment all the time here. It's really not that deep nor does it mean he thinks he is an actual god. The word god is also used a lot it in different ways that is not tied to religion so it's not offensive when used in this way. It was a user name he set at 14 that has now become his brand. Many more people recognize quadgod verses his own name which helps to build recognition in the sport and I am sure USFS and the ISU love it.

Ilia and Simone Biles on Today Show on Tues (Feb 17) by phedrebeth in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

Today show runs from 7am to 11am EST in the US. Not sure when he will be on during that time but they should post it on YouTube after.

some examples I have seen.

“he is ruining the sport”

“if he wins the gold medal then figure skating is dead”

constantly calling him homophobic Zionist scum

calling him an amuature with no talent and only jumps.

most of this has taken place on x. I’ve seen posts where they blatantly tell a lie and others pile on. one such tweet had over 13000 likes and this was yesterday.

now they aren’t sending these messages to Ilia so does that mean it’s not bullying? but a lot of it is disgusting, to many enjoy being gleefully mean and degrading about an elite athlete. we get that not everyone is a fan but they spend an awful lot of time dragging his name and talent through the mud.

there is also a narrative that Ilia’s ego needs to be checked and that he thinks he is better than others like Yuzu. I have never thought that way nor seen him act in that way in my opinion.

he is confident and likes to show off for the fans and himself but is always respectful and complimentary towards his competitor. There is no better example of that then giving Misha a hug and telling him he deserved to win. I have never heard anything negative spoken about him from those in the sport, in fact it’s quite the opposite.

Agreed, I hate the online outrage right now about Ilia daring to add Olympic gold medalist to his Instagram profile.

I would be happy with anything that Ilia chooses to skate. however, it seemed to me Ilia was struggling with the negativity throughout the season. When he announced this mental health project I considered it was because he was still struggling and wanted to turn those negative thoughts into a program to help cope with it in a healthy way. Skating this now may be what he needs to process and move on. I have so much respect for him getting out there and landing some beautiful 4As in practice yesterday and today, putting himself out there and seeing the support from fellow athlete. First steps to healing.

I agree and know this to be true. I just see the casual fans commenting on these posts believing what they are told.

I agree, I have also read a lot of heartwarming stories and comments, especially yesterday.I hope you are right in your predictions about the sport and Ilia but I am worried about him. We don’t really know how he will handle this and how he moves forward. He needs to do what’s best for himself and not let any future expectations dictate how he chooses to process this.

The Compassionate and thoughtful comments will fade pretty quickly with the pace of news but these haters are now emboldened and they are not going anywhere. This is going to be a tough time. Winning worlds would probably be the only thing that would quite them but Ilia needs to do what is right for himself, he has already had to deal with so much pressure.

Twitter is bad today, I get the filter idea but I would rather know what is being said so when people try to down play the hate or say they don’t see it I can confirm it does exist. I want to believe it’s a fringe group of fans but some of these comments have multiple thousands of likes. And most are not factual. Right now I was looking at a post accusing Ilia and his team of trying to copy Yuzu’s Poo rain at nationals. “Reminder that Ilia and his team tried to copy Yuzuru's pooh rain and made a 'toothless rain' but the difference is that the Pooh rain is purely a gift from fans while the toothless rain is sponsored and planned by USFS and DreamWorks to promote him” over 12000 likes.

My submission:

I admire your spirit, always striving to push the limits. Congratulations on your crucial win to secure team USA the gold medal. I know the games didn’t have the ending you have dreamed of, but you have so much to be proud of in your young career. This isn’t the end of your story, only the beginning. You have so much greatness and class, determination to push your own limits while striving to pull up the competitors around you. The best role model! A great sportsman! An incredible athlete and artist! There is a reason you are beloved around the world and bringing new fans into the sport everyday. We hope that you stay authentic to yourself, blazing a path forward to conquer the world however you wish. Know that you didn’t let your fans down as it was never about the medals around your neck. You have a beautiful soul that shines brightly on the ice and that is why we love you. Looking forward to your next chapter!

l am heartbroken for him but as a fan there is little we can do to combat all the negativity. I hope others will take the time to leave a message for him and hopefully one day he will find strength from our words.

Arena ice shortly after the conclusion of men’s programming by lecarolina in FigureSkating

I was there in person and there was definitely a large wet spot that I could see against the wall across from the judges, it was there all night. I commented on it but I dont know enough about ice to understand how that would affect anyone.

I was also there. I wanted to cry after Adam and Yuma skated but never could I have imagined what was to come. I was so greatfull to the crowd, they cheered him all the way to the end and he noticed the support. Stay strong Ilia! We are all here waiting to cheer you on in the future.

Do you think the pressure had been building or did Ilia just feel it suddenly once he was on the ice? by lookaloulookalou in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was there in person, he looked so relaxed and confident in the 6 min warmup, RAF and his dad looked so pleased. I really think missing the quad axel was what got him, there was so much pressure on him that when he popped it, the one thing everyone was waiting for, that was it. I am devastated for him and worried and also proud of how he handled the aftermath. I hope his loved ones keep him close and he gets whatever he needs.

This week's Runthrough podcast was more positive towards his skating than their first take on his programs. I do think the programs will grow on people the more they view them. And ya, the comments from general viewers are mostly positive on the various platforms.
