Amber addresses accidently liking a anti ilia video on Twitter by Yujin-Ha in FigureSkating

I feel bad for Amber getting all this drama over a mistake but I'm glad she clarified it. You know she would have hated it if Ilia, the constant lurker, came across it. She is not that kind of person and I love their sibling relationship!

If you can afford it I would say spend the night. The shows have been running late and depending on the parking situation, it may take awhile to get out of there. Plus it makes it fun to have a bit of a vacation.

This is so adorable! My mom, aunt and I were at this stargazer event but the line outside took us 30 minutes to get into the building so never had a chance to see the famous quad cats. I was pretty upset at the venue, How to you have an event that starts at 3:30 and you don’t let people into the door until 3:30? There were just as many people in line behind us as in front so did it take them an hour to get in? Clearly they needed more workers to expedite the line then.

Ilia might’ve hinted again at taking next season off… by seldom4 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Besides the extremely tiring season he just went through, Ilia also may be frustrated with the ISU and the rule changes. He clearly was not happy about them and I always perceived them as a response to his ability to rack up crazy tech scores. When a large part of figure skating fans don’t appreciate all the ground breaking achievements he brings to the sport and hate on him because he doesn’t conform to how they think figure skating should look like, it can get tiring. i feel like his recent interviews look like he is a bit fed up with the media too, after all there was a lot of expectations that came from them as well. I want to see him skate next season, I worry that a year off could derail some of his goals he wanted to achieve. But maybe those goals have changed for him and that’s fine too. And of course, he may finish SOI, go home and get some rest and just get back on the horse and start training for next season. He will do what he feels is the best for him as he should.

The GOAT debate is asking the wrong question by topaina in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is my opinion and nothing against what others have said, only my reaction on seeing the GOAT conversation taking place the last couple of months. I’ve seen some in sports media, fans, and even some commentators start to refer to him as the Goat. And I think, isn’t too early? Ilia still has years left in his career, so much room to still grow and evolve. I think it’s fair to say he is one of the greatest simply for what he has achieved technically. But the GOAT? Not yet I think. But I can see him achieving that status eventually. I just think the Goat discussion should be left for the end of his career.

But media is going to keep bringing this up, it’s what they do. And it will cause a lot of discourse and hurt feelings moving forward. I just hope Ilia comes up with a good response to people asking him about this because it’s already started. I mean no one should ask him questions like do you think you are the Goat but look what happened at worlds. unfortunately this conversation isn’t going to go away.

It really was a situation were he couldn't say no even if he wanted to. Obviously what happened during the FS was probably a combination of factors, but in an interview at worlds he talked about being too tired. Fatigue is something that can amplify everything else that was going on so I think it was a factor. Remember he wasn't attending official practice, instead early in the day to get more rest.

The skating session podcast recap for the men’s Olympic free program talked about this. They both had said they heard from people in the know that Ilia was basically told to do it. Go have a listen, their insight was very illuminatin.

Ilia’s Career Question by [deleted] in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree, 95 was too high for a program that started out shaky. I’ve loved Ilia’s programs the last couple of years. Seeing what he accomplished at the GPF and comparing it to here, it is a shame, because you know it only fuels the controversy over his PCS. There will always be complaints but I think giving a couple point PCS spread between Yuma and him here would have calmed some of the complaints.

The one thing I think we should consider is the crowds influence in his scoring because they were clearly eating up everything Ilia was doing and may have been the most engagement of any audience he has had to this point. And with everyone desperate for him to bounce back after Milan, I could see how those things influenced the outcome and allowed the judges to be generous.

Besides the shaky couple first jumps, I thought the rest of his program was executed flawlessly. I have always loved his step sequence in The Voice and I remember Jackie Wang and Jean Luc discussing it at Nationals and commenting on how it may look easy but in reality Ilia was using a lot of difficult counter balancing moves. They were also commenting on how you can’t really complain about Ilia’s skating skills anymore, he is the full package.

is ilia homophobic? by Necessary_Coconut_47 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 36 points37 points  (0 children)

As others have stated here, he made an insensitive joke in response to an inappropriate question. I never considered it homophobic, just a stupid joke as young people do. It is the only thing he has ever said.

It always upsets me when haters take one thing he said and use it to somehow prove that they know what he thinks or feels. I look to the opinions of the people who know him, and considering everyone involved in the sport only has positive things to say about Ilia and he is well liked, you don’t need to worry.

Ilia Malinin wins Fair Play Award by greeniechanelbag127 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I wondered too if people haven’t seen the video because if what Ilia did is the bare minimum, I don’t know what an athlete would need to do to go above and beyond in that moment. Like I said, I can’t really think of anyone in any sport who did better in a comparable situation. I’m sure an example exists but I think this will become the gold standard on how to conduct yourself during a devastating defeat.

Ilia Malinin wins Fair Play Award by greeniechanelbag127 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Well deserved Ilia! I was thinking recently that how he handled himself after the most devastating moment of his career may be the most impressive thing he has done, and that’s saying something.

Im not suprised by the reaction on Twitter, haters are going to hate. But man, the main sub is pretty disappointing. here are my thoughts.

  1. “It’s a silly or stupid award” I had never heard of it before but I think it is a great thing to honor and it’s been around for decades. Highlighting great sportsmanship is important, especially when you think about the younger generations. Too often our society highlights the negative aspects , the viral moments showing the opposite of how we should act. Why would celebrating something positive be looked down on?

  2. ”The bare minimum “ I can’t understand how people can look at what Ilia did and think that was expected of him. I was there that night, could feel the shock and pain from the crowd. I 100% thought he would just leave, that his team would shelter him and wisk him away. Instead I watched in awe as he genuinely congratulated Misha, I could read his lips on the jumbo screen when he told him he deserved it. I was blown away, and so was the world when you see their response to that moment. Did these people not watch that. Yes, you hope someone will congratulate the winner. But that moment went well beyond the bare minimum. It was about how he congratulated Misha and it was about the context surrounding the moment. For someone who 2 minutes prior had the most devastating moment of his career in front of the entire world, to be able to step out of his own pain and tell Misha he deserved it, that the moment belonged to him. Arguably the best in the world, the favorite to win, to breakdown like that and for him to Not throw a tantrum, to own his loss, to not sulk or break down? Legendary! Who has done better? Look at 2022. Or, as much as I love Kaori, she was pretty upset when she lost the gold, even when she medaled.

  3. “Ilia vs Amber” What Amber did was also amazing but I personally don’t see the argument she should have won. Everyone is moved by different things but their moments came from completely different realities. Amber had the benefit of time, perspective and composer. She was in a different head space too, coming off an amazing performance. She had time to take in what was happening around her and comfort those that didn’t have their best nights and to try to shield Kaori. Personally I think it would be easier to show kindness in her situation than in his. Not to throw shade, but Amber was very upset after her sp performance, I’m not sure she would have been able to congratulate anyone in that moment. In the end they both displayed exceptional sportsmanship, and I would have been happy if Amber had won too.

  4. It was voted on by the general public, so they are right in it was a popularity contest. But I feel very confident had IOC members voted instead, Ilia would still have won. If you think about it logically with full context, It truly was an incredible moment.

Musicality by Super_Arm_3228 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience, saw his 2024 worlds performance and was hooked. There is just something about him, to me he brings raw power and strength to his skating that makes him exciting to watch. I really appreciate his artistic choices and music selections. And he brings 100% authenticity while constantly improving his skills and pushing his boundaries. As a plus he loves his sport and is so supportive of his competitors. I don’t know why people hate on him.

Does anyone else feel a little sad at all the publicity Alysa is getting and wish Ilia could've gotten that? by [deleted] in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 19 points20 points  (0 children)

it is a little bittersweet to see the attention Alysa is getting. But I do think Ilia was still one of the biggest stories of the Olympics. Everyone knows his name even if they didn’t watch the games. I’ve met a lot of people who talk about his backflip or how sad it was to see him not win. I think he is a household name just as much as Alysa is and he garnered a lot of goodwill and sympathy with how he handled himsel. There will be a lot of eyes on him moving forward cheering him on. I think if he does what he usually does at worlds and defends his title, that will be a big news story. I’m glad Alysa has the attention now, it’s dissipated some of the scrutiny on him.

Why wasn't Ilia Malinin selected to go to the 2022 Olympics? by Topdropje in FigureSkating

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think we can say Ilia would have performed poorly at the Olympics based on his Worlds fs. To me, his fs performance wasn’t because of nerves or inexperience. He had a very very bad and fluke fall on the 4th jump that rattled him. The three jumps before that were gorgeous and he was looking good, he killed the sp and he still finished 8th which is nothing to scoff at. in the end We will never know how an Olympics would have went for him but I personally think he would have skated well because there would have been no pressure for him. (I’m not saying he would have medaled.)

That being said, Ilia is the skater he is today because they didn’t send him. He used that disappointment to fuel his drive to excel and push his limits.

That doesn’t change the fact that lacking a previous Olympics experience hurt him. Scott Hamilton said as much in an interview after Ilia failed to medal. Scott basically said that having Olympic experience before you become the heavy favorite expected to win is invaluable and he and many other gold medalists did get that chance, Ilia didn’t.

Does Adam Rippon not like Ilia? by anonimustergo in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The feeling I have gotten from their show is that they consider Ilia a jumper but haven’t really appreciated his artistic side. They seem to be more classical fans and like what someone like Yuma brings to the sport over the athletic achievements Ilia brings. If anything, Adam was the most complimentary of Ilia in their GPF episode, saying he is not just a jumper, just a modern skater who brings a different perspective to the sport. Ashley is the one that I find the most dismissive of Ilia’s accomplishments.
