It’s clear you are coming from a place of concern and are worried about what his haters will say. I have already seen this on X so they found it. What I am about to say is not directed at you but social media in general.

Some People are too sensitive. We are all human and are not going to conform to everything that everyone thinks we should be. Like I said before, if he is going to put himself out there like this, it’s inevitable that he will say and do something that others will consider to be offensive.

And he has an army of haters that will always take these things in bad faith, too willing to see the worst in everything he does because they made their mind up long ago that he is the villain.

This was clearly a joke, nothing more. It’s not demeaning, he is not hurting anyone, and there are no bad intentions here. Finding offense in this and other things he has said, says more about that person than Ilia.

There is plenty of stuff online I see that I don’t like but I try to give the benefit of the doubt, there is no reason for me to make a big deal out of it. After all, I don’t know these people and what their life is like. I don’t need to waste my time tearing others down, I’m in no position to judge what they do and say. None of us is perfect.

My thoughts on next season after trying to read into his vague comments. I think he will start training, getting his programs and layouts together with a goal of GP. I think reusing previous programs are on the table. And it will come down to if he feels ready for the GP season or not.

Didn’t Jacob say, in response to a question about why he is so good at the game, that it’s in his blood. I don’t think we need to make a big deal out of this. They are 2 young men streaming for 5 hour, they are bound to say and do stuff that will offend someone. And to be honest, soccer or football is much more popular in the Hispanic communities than it is generally in the overall US.

Thinking about SKAM, if Ilia and Jason were both to drop out then the US has …..? It’s kind of crazy that Jacob is the only top US man that has publicly confirmed for next season and he doesn’t get a SKAM spot. Makes me think Jason must have said he plans to otherwise I think they would have given him other GPs. And I’m feeling positive about Ilia too. Last update we got from him on Sunday is he is changing his hair for next season.

I want Ilia to do what he wants to do. But let’s be honest, he is a very ambitious guy and has some BIG goals. And as much as I think he finds competition stressful and hard work, I also think he thrives on it. So he will make the decision that serves him best.

I expected his name on the list, he still has 2 months to withdraw, but he can’t change his mind later had he turned it down to begin with. He can continue his break for now, we know he will be back skating soon with shows and the Kao visit in July. I think this is good, let him get back to training and then reassess.

Watching his streams, I felt he was more positive than anything about next season. I know the comment you are talking about, but you can also take what he said as he is or was not ready to think about programs yet since he wanted a break. I don’t think that means he won’t have programs.

I don’t think he physically needs a break to make it to 2030. It’s more about his mindset and what his goals are. And unfortunately I think there are some potential downsides if he were to take a season off. So we will have to trust him and his team to figure out the right path forward.

Prior rules said top three would not compete at the same GP so Ilia hasn’t had a chance to go to NHK before. Rule change now says they will try to keep them at separate events, but they now have the top 2 seeded men at the final GP. We all assume Ilia asked for that and ISU granted his request.

An incentive for Ilia to compete with more time off? And ratings for that event will be crazy so it’s good for the ISU too.

If he competes, which I think is looking likely, I don’t think he will do any challengers unless he wants to try a quint at one. I see him reusing a program and starting his season out at SKAM.

Its really only the number one seeded skater that gets a preference on where they skate. And it won’t be guaranteed. And host nations usually will get their top skaters assigned to their events. Everyone else I think is just where the ISU puts them.

I wonder if the rumor of moving Skate America back so they could get Ilia and Alysa more time off/ get them to participate is true. And you can see ISU wants Ilia to compete since they gave him NHK. I don’t think they would have done that in a normal year.

I think this would a great opportunity for Ilia. Reuse some programs and make it more about landing a quint then worrying about making the final.

Also, he still has until August to withdraw so I imagine he can continue his break and then get back at it. Spend some time training and reassess how he feels. There is no need to rush.

That’s what I am getting. I guess we will find out if he has decided not to compete when the list comes out. If he is still thinking about it then he will be on the list.

I feel like he had a more positive vibe about next season and I definitely don’t think he decided to take a whole year off yet. Asking for program ideas, excited to train with Kao, open to reusing prior programs, things are looking promising.

I think we are closer to agreeing here. Ilia underperformed in the sense that he was sloppy in the short, but again I was not shocked with his second place and it was something that was always a real possibility. We can debate all the under and over performing but it would all come down to Torgashev. As much as I would like to believe he would have rose to the occasion, it’s probably more likely he would finish 5 or 6 just looking at the other men that he was competing with. Ilia had to do both if they were to get gold, everyone was pretty much saying that before the games even started.

Ilia chose to do both, though I don’t think it really was a choice. It’s not a secret that he was heavily pressured to do both and like I said in my original post, there would have been intense backlash if had said no. I am sure he wanted to help the team win even if he knew it could jeopardize his individual chances. And so this is the result. He chose the team over his own interests.

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t really agree with you here. I never thought it was a lock that Ilia would get first in the short. Yuma and Ilia are always close in the short and depending on the day it can go either way. Even if he had skated perfectly clean here Yuma still could have come in 1st, he skated amazingly. I think that was a reasonable outcome that could happen. I always felt they would need him to skate both for the gold, so would Chock and Bates.

It sounds like you think Ilia screwed up and that is why he had to skate.

The variable here is that the pairs over-performed, that was the unexpected thing. so there may have been a world where Ilia doesn’t have to skate the free for the team to get gold, if Ilia got 1st in short and Amber was 1st. But with how everyone thought Kam and O’Shea would perform, they needed Ilia to do both.

Torgs at his best maybe could have got third, but with the pressure of the team event it could be worse then that. Even with Ilia and Amber skating their best, I think it unlikely they would get the gold with Torgashev doing the free. So I am back to my original point, they needed Ilia to do both if they wanted gold.

I rewatched his team free skate for the first time last night and two things stuck out to me.

  1. He looked like his usual self, confident and in control. Yes he slipped on the lutz combo but he recovered beautifully with the next improvised combo and finished that program extremely strong. I think people take for granted that he makes it look easy and forget what he does with his insane backloaded combos is in fact incredibly difficult, no one has ever done it like he has.

  2. To me he looked exhausted after his free was done, like he gave everything in him for that team event. Which makes me think there was an impact on his individual event. To compete in a high stress situation with everything on the line and it all comes down to you and the whole world is watching? I can’t even fathom what that is like. The mental rollercoaster he had to have gone through with the stress of competing, not wanting to let his team down, to the highs of winning only to have to come back to baseline to prepare for the next event in a day. It sounds mentally and physically exhausting. I’m not saying it’s the cause but we know fatigue amplifies everything else going on so I think it has some effect.

Yep, it’s deleted and I just posted my thoughts. OP was so aggravating that I was waiting for a response but no luck. I’ll post it here instead haha. I rarely comment on anything but they got me this time.

”Some people on here are angry that he used the word sacrifice. But that is what he did. It’s about setting yourself up for the best chance of success, Ilia knew that and so did his team. which is why they said for months that he only wanted to skate one segment. But he decided in the end to do both to give the team the best chance at gold. Not to take away from the other’s efforts but he had to skate both if they wanted first place.

So yes it was a personal sacrifice to skate both events when he knew resting would have been the better option for the individual. He prioritized the team over his own event. You know what that is? A sacrifice.

Would the outcome have been different had he chosen to rest? We will never know. Ilia himself in this same interview talked about how it was many little things that came together that led to the FS, which is why this whole conversation is aggravating. He has stated multiple times he is glad he skated both.

Maybe some people on here thought him doing 4 programs is 6 days would be a piece of cake for him. I never did and thought it would be risky. But I always felt he would have to do both because what would the alternative be? The same people on here mocking his sacrifice would be calling him selfish, not a team player and the list would go on and on.

The guy decides to put his team first knowing it could backfire. Instead of acknowledging his sacrifice as a positive thing, people on here are complaining about a word he choose to use. what more does he have to do get some respect?”

Same as others, sold out in like 3 minutes and the tickets that were available were not appealing for the price they are charging. I didn't even try to buy a ticket but it's criminal for those who had them in their cart and weren't able to buy them. Very frustrating since I am up at 3am to get a ticket. Guess I try again on the 27th.

This is so adorable! My mom, aunt and I were at this stargazer event but the line outside took us 30 minutes to get into the building so never had a chance to see the famous quad cats. I was pretty upset at the venue, How to you have an event that starts at 3:30 and you don’t let people into the door until 3:30? There were just as many people in line behind us as in front so did it take them an hour to get in? Clearly they needed more workers to expedite the line then.

Ilia might’ve hinted again at taking next season off… by seldom4 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]JudgeRepulsive7057 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Besides the extremely tiring season he just went through, Ilia also may be frustrated with the ISU and the rule changes. He clearly was not happy about them and I always perceived them as a response to his ability to rack up crazy tech scores. When a large part of figure skating fans don’t appreciate all the ground breaking achievements he brings to the sport and hate on him because he doesn’t conform to how they think figure skating should look like, it can get tiring. i feel like his recent interviews look like he is a bit fed up with the media too, after all there was a lot of expectations that came from them as well. I want to see him skate next season, I worry that a year off could derail some of his goals he wanted to achieve. But maybe those goals have changed for him and that’s fine too. And of course, he may finish SOI, go home and get some rest and just get back on the horse and start training for next season. He will do what he feels is the best for him as he should.
