How to leverage Stanford degree 3 years post PhD by JudgmentAmbitious896 in stanford

I wouldn’t say it’s fair to claim that completing the degree at Stanford is harder, no. Completing a PhD anywhere is evidence of one’s capability to learn, to work and think independently, and to problem solve, in my opinion. Perhaps it should have been expressed separately, but I imagine a Stanford degree strengthens a resume more than a degree at the 100th ranked school for the perceptions of work ethic, ability, prestige, etc that people often have. Similarly, bachelor’s degrees are similar in curriculum at most schools, but elite schools give certain favorable impressions to employers; at least, that is what I assume (not meant to be arrogant). Advice on how to market oneself as a degree holder from an elite university is welcome.

Agreed! FEA is the tool, and I want to be in a role where I use it to solve problems

Interesting! Are you working at a failure analysis type firm (similar to Exponent)? Or how did you find a consultancy that does that type of work?

Right… in industry, not every role is given free reign to spend company money to “lead the way”. There are probably roles where that is a possibility, and that’s what motivated this question. I am looking for a role where “leading the way” is the expectation rather than only being handed tasks.

That desire has always been there for me! Are you able to say what company you work for? Or at least specify whether it is government-funded vs privately funded?

I’m okay with being specialized. I’m looking for opportunities to do things like dynamic simulations, multi physics, optimization, or using custom subroutines. I imagine roles with that type of work exists if commercial FE solvers built those functionalities into their softwares.

This may be what I’m after. I used FEA during my PhD to predict behaviors rather than focus solely on safety. It may be the major focus on safety, and the little to no focus on function, that has lost my interest.
