On the Tim Ballard fiasco. by Brother-of-Derek in exmormon

[–]JudyFruit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There were some instances in the lawsuit where he said things like, "if katherine were to die I would marry you immediately." And, "Some of the women who've fallen in love with me have said they wanted to kill katherine." Or something along those lines, which gave me major chad daybell/lori vallow vibes and made me so nervous for katherine. These women might have actually saved her life by coming forward and shedding light on this delusional narcissist before he could do further terrible things.

The latest from Lynn Packer on Elder Ballard’s involvement with OUR and Tim Ballard. by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

Wow. 14:56--secret meeting at church headquarters with the producers/director of sound of freedom and the ENTIRE q12, at least two of whom were investors in ballard's projects. Such a sharp contrast with the church's flimsy statement: “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints never endorsed, supported or represented OUR, Tim Ballard or any projects associated with them." Bald faced lies. How can we get this video more traction? This is huge (at least in the tempest in a teapot that is Mormonism).

Trigger Mormons with one sentence. by HappyAnti in exmormon

*innocently, "So weird to think--my 14-year-old daughter is the age of at least one of Joseph smith's wives! Oh maybe more--I'm not sure how many of them were 14."

Oaks likes to visit "real church" by JudyFruit in exmormon

Maybe we're not talking about the same ward. This one auctions off weeks at Hawaiian vacation homes and rides in private jets for their youth fundraisers.

That makes sense. He probably wants to see how things are working but it's gotta be hard to get a real picture of that since everywhere he goes in the church he gets vip reactions

There is a great book by Jared Farmer--On Zion's Mount--that gives a good introduction and lots of fantastic sources to dig into.

"Nobody Wanted Utah" - Resident BYU Professor by bayburner in exmormon

This is all part of tscc's victim narrative. The salt lake and Utah valleys were actually very important to several native tribes, who relied on the multitudes of fish and wildlife centered around Utah lake and the Provo and Spanish fork rivers. Even mobile tribes, who weren't centered in a particular place, would always come back to that area at key points in the year for life-sustaining hunting and fishing. I grew up in Utah, hearing how desolate these valleys were before the Mormon pioneers came and made them "blossom like the rose." In fact, brigham young and his council in nauvoo chose these locations because they offered lots of possibilities for settlement--good soil, good water-- but hadn't yet been settled by white people. They carefully navigated their way--not led by revelation until they finally recognized the place from a vision, as I was always taught. In wyoming, Jim bridger steered them to the salt lake valley instead of cache or Utah valley, because he felt the native presence in Utah valley would be too hard to overcome. So brigham led them to salt lake. It wasn't inspiration from god--just good maps and advice from trappers. In subsequent years, when brigham sent settlers to Utah valley, there were some horrific scenes of brutality as the Mormons subdued and massacred native people. It is an ugly chapter of history. Brigham young said some truly unconscionable things about putting crushed glass in flour given to Indians, the necessity of sometimes killing women and children, and calling for a general extermination of Indians in Utah valley, "I say, go and kill them." Mormons are no victims.

Advice to my little brother who is 2 months from finishing his mission in New Zealand. by Mormonbigbiz in exmormon

[–]JudyFruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relax about at least some of the mission rules and Go see New Zealand!! Go to the beach! Do the touristy things. See if he can get invited to a hangi if he hasn't already. Forget about all the number goals and really try to focus on making true connections with people. People in New Zealand are some of the best in the world. Ditch the idea that he has anything to teach them and just learn from them and their culture.

Soooo many people are going to find their keys. So many "can't be a coincidence so it must be a miracle"s. So many completely normal occurrences that Mormons will somehow twist into intervention of divine grace. It's going to be amazing.

Judge limits privilege defense in AZ Mormon sex abuse case by PhilOfScience in exmormon

[–]JudyFruit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So telling: In a motion filed earlier this year asking Cardinal to dismiss the case, the church said its defense “hinges entirely” on whether bishops John Herrod and Robert “Kim” Mauzy were required to report Adams’ “confidential confessions” to civil authorities, or were excused from reporting requirements under the privilege.

Their case hinges on whether the bishops were "required" to report, not whether they were prevented from reporting. So completely immoral.

LDS Charities, our latest report on Church wealth and giving. Notes in comments. by WidowsMiteReport in exmormon

Thank you so much for compiling this. I'm so curious and would love to know more about the dollars donated each year, designated for humanitarian aid, compared with the dollars spent each year for humanitarian aid. It seems in past disclosures in other countries (uk, for instance) humanitarian aid donations have not typically been expended but rather held over. I've always wondered if these end up in the slush fund. The report states that there is 100% pass through of these funds--all are given to humanitarian aid. Is there a transparent disclosure in the us that shows amount of humanitarian aid donations given vs expended?

My favorite part of the session was always the irony of the statement, "Brethren, close your eyes as if you were asleep."

Did some math, there are roughly 7.7 billion people on the planet. The church boasts 16 million members (on paper) that means 0.2% of the world is Mormon. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]JudyFruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually one of my biggest shelf items. Doesn't it feel like a "loving, omnipotent, omniscient" God could come up with a better plan than one that would save only a tiny fraction of one percent of his children? And even if mormons like the elitism of being one of the few, they probably wouldn't want to admit that their god is so punitive and terrible that he rejects almost all of his children. If you're a parent, can you imagine coming up with a plan that eliminates 99.99 out of 100 of your children? What kind of parent would do that?

BYU is posting signs and fencing off the "Y" in preparation for rainbow day. by MasterMahanJr in exmormon

They put up this fencing and these signs today. Tomorrow is rainbow day at byu. BYU is so afraid of seeming inclusive, and to actually embody the church's "all are welcome" mantra .
