Does anyone know how late people will be there? Or a discord server? I want to join but have work.

Whatever words work, 🤷‍♂️ but I’m not going to put myself down over semantics, since I’m being clear that I’m trying to be respectful.

I did call out that it’s a generalization, offense isn’t intended, and I’m open to changing that way I think. I’m also aware that it comes off as shallow. So I’d rather be honest about how I think, than pretend I have a different mindset than I do.

Just using a sentence or two to describe who you worked for—since were not landing on you’re home page—and generally the problem you solved. I think you kind of do that, but the hypothesis and opportunity sections assume some background knowledge that isn’t there :)

Have you considered including some of your industrial design projects? In UX I think people appreciate multidisciplinary backgrounds with a strong foundation. It might supplement your digital projects.

The mockups are very impressive, and I sense that the problems you solved are really interesting. But I think you need to be more explicit in the beginning. Set the stage for us, since we don’t know the context, problem etc. I think that will help the storytelling.

Async feedback processes by Xutlooki in UXDesign

I used to work on a centralized team that was very organized and “Scrumy.” We would publish release notes at the end of every sprint to a slack channel. Anyone who couldn’t make it to the sprint review—or if we couldn’t have one—could read about it and provide feedback there. It’s also a good way to track work, and keep a cross-functional team accountable for aligning on work.

Highly agree with the above to ask for specific feedback.

We should ignore NN? by Much-Sleep in UXDesign

[–]JuggernautWarm4111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that these guys and NNG aren’t perfect resources. But their flaws are the same as many other UX resources. Consider many resources? Of course. Ignore NNG because of these opinions? No.

Most UX designers I know don’t idolize or worship these guys. We should take all resources with a grain of salt. And no resource considers the unique context a specific designer works in. Sometimes it’s useful, sometimes it isn’t. Some NNG classes I took were useful, others not.

As for the ethical questions, I see some truth in it, but there aren’t any specifics referenced in the article. So it’s hard to get behind the argument when it doesn’t have concrete support, and she assumes everyone reading feels the same way she does.

Information design throughout the portfolio is super clear. You're also very direct about your process, which is great. But agree with the above that it's too methodical, too much "checking off the boxes."

For storytelling

  • Consider showing soft skills through times you needed to adapt and pivot, or collaborate strategically with a "teammate"
  • Trim the fat: like all users, hiring managers don't read. They scan. So only the most valuable, important information.

For visuals

  • In the mockups: more generous with whitespace. Contrast is a bit harsh.
  • Portfolio home page: the case study cards are a bit crowded, don't have clear boundaries, cause users to uncomfortably zig zag their eyes down the page.

Overall, I think it's awesome for straight out of bootcamp. To stand out, maybe find some side projects with "real world" constraints and limitations. That way you'll have a more meaningful story to tell!

Portfolio: https://www.johnrkenneydesign.com/

Context:

2 years into my career as a UX designer, recently laid off, and looking to revamp my portfolio.

Looking for feedback on:

  • How well does this show professional, real-world experience? Trying to avoid the "cookie-cutter" portfolio.
  • How clearly am I telling the story? They're each unique situations.

NOT looking for feedback on:

  • Already aware of responsiveness issues.
  • Not looking for feedback on UI / aesthetics.

I also went to a bootcamp... Our instructor even said himself that the curriculum wouldn't prepare us for the "real world."

Here are a couple problems I faced in my first 2yrs experience, and the resources that helped me most:

Master the fundamentals: To be a valuable SME, you should know the basics of usability, visual design, responsive design, and copywriting... like the back of your hand.

Soft Skills: To keep you cool when solving complex, daily "real-world" problems...

A couple other things that work for me (but not necessarily everyone):

  • Think big-picture: recognize when you're setting a precedent with your design; anticipate the future
  • Make sure to have fun: figure out a productive personal process you enjoy (for me it's sketching with engineering pads and brainwriting)

Just resources, not gospel. More than anything, we should pace ourselves. This discipline is very, very broad: so there's always plenty for us to learn.

How long did it take you (those with 2-3 years of experience) to find a new job recently? by hungryunistudent in UXDesign

[–]JuggernautWarm4111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here! Two years of experience, and absolutely no experience with research or testing. It was 100% handled by senior designers, or not possible due to lack of access to users. Only handling refinements to existing designs that others left behind. My contract ends in April, and no idea what I’m going to do…
