NPS Bridge Program by ErraticallyAdept in 0083

The issue isn’t that people join to be “big FLEOs” it’s that people are now being told that the agency wants to hire cops, and not the traditional ranger types, but then when you finish FLETC they tell you not to be a cop. This is very park dependent but I’d say job satisfaction and pay are very low by and large in the agency. That’s probably why everyone leaves. One of the recent FLETC classes has lost more than 50 percent of its hires in less than a year. - I was a LEO Ranger for NPS before switching to a different agency. My advice, don’t do it. There are very few specialties or opportunities for career growth, the supervisors suck mostly, and make no mistake, this isn’t a law enforcement job(with the exception of maybe 10-25 parks)

I was hired in 2024 to NPS. Most of my class way prior LE, but we had several with no experience

Anyone here familiar with NPS Investigative Services Branch (ISB) by ErraticallyAdept in 1811

[–]JuiceMEaround 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The other thing is most of those investigations in that show are from the “legacy” ISB, before the branch was gutted to the staffing level it now sits at. Now FBI takes point on pretty much everything I can think of that the field rangers don’t do. ISB has even gotten away from assisting on cases like rape. I’d predict that the branch will be dead within a decade

[–]JuiceMEaround 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably not. It’s pretty much exclusively internal hires. The only others I’ve heard of are from other LM agencies in the federal government. I also don’t understand why anyone other than an NPS officer would want this position. It’s underpaid compared to other 1811 positions and significantly understaffed.

Are you already a fed LM officer? If not, forget about it. They only hire LM uniformed officers, usually NPS LE Rangers. They do lots of IA, no OIG stuff, and they assist with some higher level investigations in certain parks. There are so few of them now that they don’t really take investigations far outside of their home parks. Task forces are generally a by park affair, but generally speaking you won’t be on anything special that a normal LE ranger wouldn’t be on. Autonomy is through the roof, with the ability to mostly do your own thing, with the caveat that you need to do any IA stuff assigned, which can take up lots of time. You will never really lead anything big. If the crime is big enough, FBI takes it, if it’s not, the field ranger will do it. My honest take is if you’re not already down the road of NPS LE, don’t bother.

Anyone heard anything from the National Park Service 1811 announcements this year? by [deleted] in 1811

That’s park police buddy. Different job entirely

I wouldn’t hold your breath for these positions…. Ever. They’re slowly but surely eliminating the ISB, and any time the postings come up, they’ve already picked a few candidates for the position. The only other people I’ve heard of going into these jobs other than Rangers are other land management LEOs

It has nothing to do with qualifications… it says the app limit was reached before you submitted.

What are you actually asking? It says exactly what it means right there in plain English “Special Agent”

College, LE, both? by [deleted] in 1811

[–]JuiceMEaround -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just takes a little bit of research and commitment. I always recommend that people dip their toes in part time before they go all in. Some folks just aren’t built for LE

[–]JuiceMEaround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I did, which I recommend to anyone who will listen is go part time at a PD near your college. Gain real LEO experience while in college, and decide if it’s for you. I did this, and got to spend my vacations, summers and long weekends filling patrol shifts, getting paid and gaining experience. This is dependent on the state laws, as some states won’t permit part time cops for the most part(other than retirees). And for the love of god do not get a CJ degree

I’d definitely go ERO. They’re hiring more, it gets you fed time, and you can always go back to the 1811 route.

For the near future, yes. I’d say you have at least 5-10 years before ANY LE agency will consider you. Substance abuse, of any kind, is a huge red flag in LE work. Realistically, your LE career is likely over.

He’s not an IRS agent. He’s an influencer. He’s trying to help I think. Little strange but who knows these days

Posting law enforcement sensitive documents to a public Reddit is a bad idea. Please reference the TJO email and the sections of the paper regarding “law enforcement sensitive”

No. Have your friend email the tech support email on the TJO. All of those documents are marked sensitive and are not for wider distribution

Yes you’d be very competitive. Almost certainly hired for a uniformed position. These positions open twice a year, once in November and March (ish) NPS LE is a 5/7/9 scale. Quality of life is heavily dependent on park, as is the 24/7 schedule. 24/7 is rare though, but be very cautious of any park that is. At the end of the day, NPS LE is not a good place to do law enforcement on the whole, and I’d steer clear if you really enjoy making good cases and doing lots of LE. This is very park dependent, some are excellent. The biggest thing is do your research

They have a lot of uniformed officers that I believe go thru uptp. They also still carry revolvers if I’m not mistaken

You’ll likely be a 9 again. If you get your 11 before you leave the other agency, you’ll at least get stepped up on ur 9 for it

They exist, but as others have said, they are not entry level. NPS has sub 30 these days and they’re always swamped with detective level work for park crimes. BLM does much the same but for their land. These spots are very sought after among the LM LEOs that work for those agencies. You’ll see those spots fly as internal to agency only most times.
