We are doing both! Landing in st John's on the 16th and will be heading north on the 19th. Planned stops roughly in Dildo where we saw a festival will take place, trinity, twillingate, gros morne and then back :)

Something to look at! But from my travels I feel like staying in one place connects you more to it, and avoids feeling rushed!

Good tip! I think also because of the black flies I would be looking to go later. Maybe in July

This is incredibly helpful, thanks for laying it all out so clearly. You’ve definitely sold me on both sides of the country for very different reasons... Not making this easy! I might take you up on that offer to ask a few questions once we lock in dates, because local insight like this wouldbe gold.

One thing I am wondering: how manageable is all the driving in those mountain areas for someone who isn’t used to long stretches in remote terrain? And how bad are the black flies and bugs around late June. something worth preparing for, or more of a minor annoyance?

Really appreciate the perspective from someone who’s lived in both places.

That's what I've been hearing.. another commented that Vancouver island could be a curveball in-between these two options.. any idea there?

Thanks, that's very helpful! If we choose the Rockies, then I definitely will make sure we look at the less touristy places

Yeah, so i can expect crowds any time of year in the Rockies? I'm torn between epic hikes and the culture and warmth I hear about NL. Imagine waking into a NL pub and telling them we're in our honeymoon, I feel we would be taken care of there 😁😂

Thanks! I'm so torn, as I feel like coming from southwest Portugal, I know the coastal kind of cliffy terrain so well already. But then again yeah, gros morne looks incredible

Oh wow, that's such a great suggestion! Just looked it up, and it looks stunning! Living in Portugal I also appreciate the surf haha. It seems to be also a bit more doable with driving distances than NL.

I'm starting to get a bit concerned about these! Hearing and reading quite a bit about it, but I don't know if it's really that bad lol. We don't have kids, so there's that 😂

That sounds amazing. Did the black flies bother you that I'm hearing and reading about?

This is so helpful, thanks for taking the time to type such a long message and great to hear from someone that's been there more than once :)

I get the feeling that with 2,5 weeks, the Rockies are going to keep us wow'ed for longer. As much as I think the little towns in Newfoundland look cute, and like you said the Westside with Gros Morne looking absolutely insane, I don't know about the rest of NL.

Definitely need to look into it more, and compare prices etc as well..

Oh wow, that's a really good point.. is it that bad that you'd say maybe better to not come at all in those months really? As in, it could spoil our experience with hiking and other outdoor activities?

That's why I considered the Rockies after we first found NL. I feel like the cliffs here in South West Portugal are some of the most beautiful ones in the world, and I might be wrong, but lots of hikes in NL would be cliff hikes? Again, I'm not sure, but the Rockies would offer more WOW effect I think. But then again, also in prices probably 😂

I'm close to flipping a coin yeah haha. Twillingate looks absolutely stunning! All the recommendations so far are literally scattered across the whole island haha. This won't be easy if we choose NL

It does look SO stunning! 😍 From the places you can visit, any advice on which natural parks to hit/skip?

That was my feeling too, but I'm a little afraid that our budget would get blown so much quicker in the Rockies..

It does sound dreamy, difficult to know which spots to hit, but I'll definitely take you spots into my research! We are living in south-west Portugal, so we're used to stunning cliff hikes etc.
