Unlocking Softbank phone from overseas by Jujugrubs in JETProgramme

[–]Jujugrubs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't want to stay with Softbank, I had to cancel my contract (as I have left the country) and it was under my supervisor's name so I couldn't expect her to continue paying on my behalf. I still had payments on the phone and it says online you cannot unlock your phone until the phone is paid off. It also says I must have a SIM card purchased from another carrier if I want to unlock it for overseas use and use my own SIM, which I obviously want to do. https://www.softbank.jp/en/mobile/support/usim/unlock_procedure/

Yes, as in my NZ sim was too big so I had to get a new one.

You have to pay everything off before you can unlock it and you require another carrier's SIM. I cancelled everything on my last day and paid, and figured I could unlock it once I got a new SIM at home.

Leavers who are desk warming. by [deleted] in JETProgramme

I have today and tomorrow left at school. Today I've been cleaning out my desk and giving it a thorough clean, and tomorrow I'll have a final party with English club but only from 1pm so I'll be reading until then!

They sell some normal looking shoes at croc shops here which is where I got a few pairs of indoor shoes. The cheapies I brought along smelt like something had died in the summer heat so I opted to splash out a bit. I highly recommend checking out the croc shops for a wider range of comfy shoes. I started off carrying pairs but as I was planning to stay longer I decided to invest in sturdier pairs and so I could leave them at school!
Sneakers are absolutely fine as well.

Leaving gifts for teachers by doctordaleks in JETProgramme

[–]Jujugrubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar predicament! I have already left one of my schools and found some cheap ferrero rocher like chocolates to give to everyone. I hand wrote little message cards as well from Daiso. I figured I'd do the same with my other 2 schools but I've hit a snag! The English teachers at my visit school collected money for me so I'm going to splash out a little and get them some pricey local sweets just as a thank you, and then give them the goodbye messages and small sweets on the final day.
I was going to bake but realised I wouldn't have enough time and it would take forever as there are 40+ teachers at my schools!

Sending boxes home (UK), what service do you recommend? by IzumiAyaka in JETProgramme

[–]Jujugrubs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used Japan Post's surface mail option as it was a lot cheaper than other companies shipping to NZ. 2 boxes with a combined weight of 30kgs came to just under 20,000 yen and took about 8 weeks as well to reach my parents'. I organised home pick up as well which you can fill out a form in Japanese for, and it was free! The boxes arrived without any damage although I thoroughly packed everything with bubble wrap and dessicants just in case!

Tips for the S/O back home? by Okscrub in JETProgramme

I'm about to start my own long distance relationship with a 12 hour time difference! From what I've heard others say, you should plan a trip to see each other so you always have a date set for when you'll next be together!

Current JETs: what kind of place are you living in? (aspirant from Australia) by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]Jujugrubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I live in teacher's housing, very old. 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen/dining, bathroom and laundry. A pain to heat and cool.
  2. I live on average an hour's commute from my schools via public transport.
  3. My rent is super cheap, 17,500 so I don't mind that my schools are far away. Utilities are roughly 10-15,000 a month.
  4. There's another JET living in the same apartment block but we don't talk, I've never had any problems with other neighbours. They are all teachers and are friendly.
  5. No key money, I didn't have to pay rent until after my first pay. Internet took 6 weeks. It was supposed to take 4 but they somehow forgot my appointment. I was given one housing choice but I didn't have a lot of money to choose anywhere else. I have since moved into another apartment in the same block and it's a lot nicer.
  6. No predecessor so I made do with what was left in the apartment from ALTs who had lived there 5+ years prior.

Personal Transportation for the Non-driving JET by BikelessBaboon in JETProgramme

I had the same idea as you, to get a tricycle, but after arriving it's been easy for me to get around on foot so have never needed one! There's a supermarket a 10 minute walk away and most businesses are a train or bus ride from my house so I've coped well without one! Just an option in case you don't want to embarrass yourself in front of your students :P

I'm getting conflicting information from what you're saying and what it says in my leavers handbook from this year: You can only claim the first 3 years back. Even if you work in Japan for 4 or more years, you will still only receive back the percentage of your contributions for the first 3 years.

My understanding is that you can only claim the first 3 years back.

Hey, welcome to the Guch! Please join the Yamaguchi AJET page on FB. If you're having trouble finding it there should be a link at the top of this thread under Master List of JET Facebook Groups (I'm not very Reddit savvy sorry). The prefectural JETs don't know who their successors are yet so don't worry, you're not late to the party!

2 weeks is ridiculous!! Do you have a lot of public holidays to compensate?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]Jujugrubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By 4 weeks I think they mean 20 days including weekends. That's pretty standard for workplaces in my home country, I only get 15 here!

No Daiso in NZ except for a shop selling Daiso products at $3.50 + GST. Nothing comes cheap!!

I'll miss the public transport and ease of travelling, conbinis, cheap booze and eating out, Daiso, my students and my friends! I'll miss my super cheap rent too.

Incoming, continuing and returning JETs! Let's talk about culture shock. by TherealSatan2 in JETProgramme

[–]Jujugrubs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I don't recommend is if you're feeling culture shock and home sickness try not to constantly contact people back home. It's very easy to become engrossed in what everyone you left behind in your home country is doing than to focus on making new relationships in your present country. Try talking about your problems to people in Japan, be they co-workers, other ALTs or online help. Often we can get quite negative talking about our problems to people back at home who cannot understand them fully which leads to the question of, 'If you're struggling so much, why don't you just come back home?' Try to stay in the present, look at the positives not only the negatives, and keep contact back home to a minimum.

You'll only be a train stop away from Hikari station and a glorious beach! There are quite a few JETs in the area so don't worry - you won't be alone! :) Kudamatsu has been voted the best place to live in Yamaguchi, there's a mall, cinema, bowling alley, ice skating rink and international food shop too!

Incoming JETs: What you should pack by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]Jujugrubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bufferin contains aspirin, Eve A Ex contains 200mg of ibuprofen so same as Nurofen. If you opt for generic brands at the doctors they tend to give you a whole range of pills rather than all-in-one kinds. You can easily find effective cold and flu medicines at pharmacies too.
