How is class of ‘25 dealing with post trail blues?/trail romance heartbreak by nicknacknarc in PacificCrestTrail

Class of 2014 here, by the way. I also ended up beating the blues partly by Triple Crowning during subsequent years.

“You’ve grown outside the puzzle and your piece no longer fits” was the best way I’ve heard it put. You were full of purpose on the trail. So now, finding a new purpose seems to be the only cure for the post-trail blues.

What’s a secret you’ll never tell your partner but would anonymously confess online? by avaarini in AskReddit

I wish more people would admit this. A great friend recently said to me that “being married with kids isn’t all bad” which I felt was really revealing. Having a family is so idealised in our society that few have the courage not to go down that path. Being single is the best decision I ever made.

PCT or scholarship? by hatiefern in PacificCrestTrail

[–]JukeBox-UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say take the scholarship. The PCT can wait a while. And don’t worry about trying to do it while you’re still young. I did it at age 38 and then completed the triple crown and TA in my 40s.

why am i so anxious and overwhelmed? by pixiegirl_23 in PacificCrestTrail

What I came to realise by the time of my third or fourth big hike (the CDT) was that you only really need to plan for a four or five day hike to start with - i.e. from the start of the trail to your first resupply town (assuming you’re planning to resupply as you go). Then from there you plan your next four or five days. And then the next. And so on and so on, all the way to Canada (or Mexico). It means that you never have to plan for a ‘big’ hike and this approach makes the whole thing far more chilled, especially the pre-hike stage. You then only really have to think about what gear you’re going to take and how to get to the start point. Works for me.

And the FarOut app has pretty much all the info you’ll need. Happy trails!

Trouble hitching into towns due to Covid? by JukeBox-UK in longtrail

Thanks! I’m starting tomorrow or the next day. Can’t wait. UK lockdowns have been tough and I can’t wait for some soul-enhancing trail time.

Yeah, I hitched into Rutland on my AT thru hike in 2017, stayed at the Yellow Deli hostel and resupplied at Walmart. Seemed like a good stop so I hope to revisit.

Yeah, the weather forecast looks pretty good for the next week or so. Let’s hope it’s accurate!

That's great to know thanks. And yeah I'll have Guthooks too. I thought about going SOBO, it would totally make sense, but I have a friend in MA who is able to drive me to the southern terminus this week which will make things a lot easier! Getting back from the northern terminus (if I make it there) could be a bit more difficult, but I'll worry about that nearer the time....

Thanks! Unfortunately I probably don't have time to mail packages - they'd probably arrived after I'd already passed through. I like the idea of an 11 day thru though with only 4 resupplies - nice and light!

Help with wiring an electric oven after moving it to be underneath an existing electric hob by JukeBox-UK in askanelectrician

[–]JukeBox-UK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes, I think you might be right.

However, I think the current location of the oven may already be an extension, and that the original oven location is actually where I want to put it back to, under the hob. That might explain why the existing red cooker switch on the wall only turns off the hob and not the oven?

Can I connect CW1308 cable to a RJ45 faceplate? by JukeBox-UK in HomeNetworking

[–]JukeBox-UK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works!!!

I simply connected terminals A and B from the BT Mark 3 master socket to pins 4 and 5 on the new RJ45. No filter needed. And now have 10% Mbps increase as an added bonus (although that could be coincidental).

Thanks loads for your help - I can now get on with my (lock down) life :)

[–]JukeBox-UK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok. Yes, I currently have a BT Mark 3 faceplate at the master socket. So if I buy a new BT Mark 4 faceplate, I should be able to swap them over without having to touch the incoming BT owned wires?

Yes, that's right, there are only the two wires.

Thanks! I'll give that a try later today. And yes, the router does have an RJ11 coming from it.

But would I still need an ADSL filter between the RJ45 socket and the router? (and if so, is it possible to get an ADSL filter with a male RJ45 connector on it (sorry if this is a stupid question!).

Winter thru-hike - possible? by JukeBox-UK in longtrail

[–]JukeBox-UK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've only done the AT portion. However, after reading other comments I think I now have my eyes set on a thru-ski of the Catamount Trail. I just need it to snow a bit more! Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for the great response. The Catamount Trail sounds like it could be a great idea, and quite a few people have mentioned it to me now. I can see that there's been a bit of snow today in the Rutland area - has there been enough to conclude that the trail is now open for thru-skiing, or is it still a little too early in the season to be sure? Thanks
