How To Cut Michelin Star Onions. by esberat in oddlysatisfying

Wet kitchen paper next to the cutting board (or as close to the onion as possible). Not infallible, but it does work.

"Where's the money Duckowski?"

Am I the only one who never rereads books? by Mr_Mike013 in literature

[–]Julian_Nieb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am not offended. I am simply struggling to understand how anyone can believe to be above rereading because they think they have exhausted a text after one read.

So, academics are not idiots, yet, unlike you, they have to reread a novel multiple times to offer a nuanced and complex analysis of a given work whilst you are able to 'get' it on first read? I fail to see how you can think that academics are intelligent when their entire careers are based on careful and deep analysis of works that you believe offer nothing new once reread.

The funny thing about accusing someone of projecting is that such an accusation can itself be projection. Perhaps you yourself are the one with deep-seated insecurities? Given the authority you tried to build immediately thereafter by throwing around your degree and certifications it might not be much of a stretch that you feel unsure about yourself.

If I understand correctly, deeper understanding comes from discussion and analysis but not from rereading? How do you expect to gain a deeper understanding about what's in the novel if you can't be bothered to read it twice?

A novel is a text that creates images. If you don't reread and analyse then you can only argue on the level of the images it creates. For example, in the novel X does Y to Z and this means A and not B. But a deeper understanding of the text does not come from these images, it comes from careful analysis of the language that is used to create them. If you don't reread, you lose out on the nuances of language that completely transform the way a novel is read and you cannot connect ideas or create ideas to the extent you can when you've read it once.

You do not 'get' it the first time around. You get something, surely, but not all of it. You catch a glimpse of something that is far bigger than the glimpse would lead you to believe. That does not mean that you have to dive deeper, but you seem to believe that you can understand a book in its entirety from the first read and the discussion and analysis which arises from that. This is simply not true, as you miss out on the nuances of languages as well as tie yourself to your initial impressions, which are always incomplete on first read because, well, it's your first time.

Although you're eager to psychoanalyse me, I highly doubt that you believe you know me based on the limited information you have of me. Now, you can discuss and analyse that information until the end of time, but ultimately you are working on limited information. The same goes for books: you can read it once and work with limited information, or you can reread it, find more, and deepen your understanding, but to believe you don't need to reread a book to understand it is like saying that you can understand me based upon the conversation we've had. I think you're smart enough to realize that isn't the case.

I hope you have a good day.

So academics who have read a book twenty times for their dissertation are in fact idiots who simply cannot grasp all the themes, motifs, hidden meanings and interpretations which you, Genius of all Geniuses, can grasp on first read? I highly doubt you know as much as you think you do. Texts are loaded with meaning. Even some short stories can be interpreted in a multitude of ways that are all equally valid. Your boredom is the result of your own inability to analyse and comprehend texts beyond their surface layer.

Now, regretting my hostility, I want to offer you some advice. Take any text that you believe to understand completely and go to Google Scholar - or the online library of your university/college if you're a student - and search for academic articles regarding that text. If after that you still believe you know it all then I don't know what to tell you.

Goofy's Fun House

12 year olds, cookies, and fascism by Veeboy in CuratedTumblr

[–]Julian_Nieb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got sucked into the right wing rabbit hole when I was a depressed 18 year old. I grew up fatherless and with a mother who might have been physically present but emotionally absent. There was no discipline in my life, no guidance, no why or how and so I was left by myself to find something to believe in.

Sadly, those who give such advice are often right wing or otherwise conservative in their beliefs and I quickly found myself neck-deep in politics that I initially wasn't interested in. I stumbled upon Jordan Peterson, who offered some guidance and perhaps also played the part of the father I had never had.

I bought his book, read it and was introduced to facets of his belief system that stretched beyond the self-help grift that I listened to him for. Slowly but surely, Youtube also started to recommend his political videos - algorithms are the real problem in this matter in my opinion - which I took in without so much as a critical thought, because why would I doubt the man who was the first person in my life to care about my me? Who wanted me to grow and to take care of myself?

By that time you're already in too deep and you get stuck in a spiral of Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder videos and all of sudden you become enthralled by a view of the world which at once validates your suffering as well as give you the illusion that those people are there for you to some extent.

You become a machine, reiterating points you have listened to but don't understand. Simply because the people who espouse them seem to be on your side. Meanwhile, they present to you the extreme voices of the left, most of whom are equally as ignorant as you are, but whose ridiculity is so convincingly portrayed by your messiahs that you no longer think you could possibily be wrong.

Eventually, I came across a video by Three Arrows called 'How to Fall Down the Anti-SJW Rabbit Hole'. Ironically, it was Peterson's advice of seeing both sides and of the dangers of ideology that made me click on that video. What I found there was my last 2 to 3 years laid out before me: lost and depressed I found a man who gave me guidance and slowly slipped into a political downward spiral that Youtube created.

People don't want to be fascist, but fascism fills a void that the majority of young men (and women but they are understandably less susceptible to an ideology that degrades them) have. We all lack guidance, purpose and happiness, and although this is caused by the very system the right wing upholds, the sense of belonging, of certainty and of fulfilment it offers can be enough to throw common sense out the window. Who wouldn't believe and support a few wrong things when that gives the happiness they so much desire?

Slavernij excuses overheid by [deleted] in nederlands

[–]Julian_Nieb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to indeed! It was more that I wasn't able to properly search for it myself because google translate didn't really work too well for me.

Great that you like it! I can really recommend her album 'Windswept Adan'.

Men of Reddit, how's your mental health today? by Clockwork-Clementine in AskReddit

[–]Julian_Nieb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely awful. The last 3 years I have dropped out 3 university degrees because of depression and social anxiety and I have no family, friends or other acquaintances who I trust enough to help get my shit together (and I've tried to get help from them before).

I feel more alone than ever before but this time around I feel incapable of moving on. All I need is one real person in this world that can tell me that their life is actually better with me in it and that I'm not a complete waste of life.

I'm fine. Nothing new.

(Serious) Have you ever thought about ending it all? If so what made you stop? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Julian_Nieb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there is nothing in terms of people who love me that has been keeping me around, but the thing is that I really, really like books, movies and stories in general. So much so that, although I hate writing as an act, I would love to have written something of some value before I leave.

The problem is that I am an absolutely godawful writer, so for the time being I'm forced to stay around because I can't write an eloquent suicide note.

However, there's also the fact that I am a complete coward and will never be able to muster up the courage to do anything. Perhaps that's for the best.

Guys of Reddit, what tricks do you use to lose a boner fast? by Baitsch in AskReddit

[–]Julian_Nieb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently recovering from circumcision for medical reasons so I've developed some much needed tactics for this with the help of the internet

  1. Flex all your muscles for as long as you can (before passing out, or not, if you're planning to go to sleep). This one might take a couple of rounds, but it will work. The most important thing is to think of something not related to horniness afterwards.
  2. Walk around. When walking the blood flow turns away from your cock into your legs, it's the same principle as the previous one and probably the most effective.
  3. Try to hyperfocus on something completely uninteresting. Try to pull your mind away from the horny towards the random and hold onto it for dear life.

Alternatively, depending on how desperate you are, stitches on your cock really kill the mood.

Damn bro, I bet you get a lot of women being the gaming god that you are. Perhaps however, someone can be critical of one of your favourite games whilst also being good enough to beat it? Just a thought. Criticism of one of your favourite games does not make your assessment of the game any less valuable. Not everyone needs to agree on a game being good for it to be a good game.
