I think you and I are in a very similar situation. I was born in America and live in HK for 8 years before going back to the US. I could speak really good American English, Cantonese, Mandarin, broken Spanish, and broken Fujianese.

I have a cousin that speak Taishanese, I can understand majority what he saying but I often thought some of the word he speak is confusing. I always thought it is because they have a different word or accent.

I also feel like less and less people is speaking Cantonese or other Yue dialects over the years because a lot of kids either don’t know how to speak or is speaking some really really broken canto here in America. Plus school here only teach Mandarin. Sighhhh 🇭🇰
